Subject: NO STATE OR NATIONAL PAGEANTS THIS YEAR

Hope you all are having a pleasant Saturday. It feels like the middle of February here, I haven't been able to gather with family or friends for almost two months now, people are dying en masse, and I think we've all about reached our frustration levels. I know I have. Put me in the column of the millions of us who are not feeling on top of the world right now.

Quietly, the Miss America pageant/contest/talent search/headhunter event has been canceled and will not happen until 2021. There will be no state competitions/job search/marketing event until next year, either. I knew going into this pageant season that it wasn't looking good for the state pageants. I was almost afraid that they were going to try something like American Idol is doing and making people compete in their homes. That would just never work, even as what the competition has come to like last year. And in the heavy hit areas like New York, the whole East Coast, etc., who knows when it will be until we can all safely gather again? I don't even know if schools will be back in session at the end of summer. I would say that for smaller population states where the deaths aren't too bad, like Alaska or Wyoming, you might be able to safely have a pageant. But that's about it. The facts that we know so far suggest that the areas which are trying to safely open up are seeing surges in new diagnoses. So, it does make sense to postpone things. I know some pageants were being pushed back until September, but that's difficult if colleges and universities are going to open up.

They didn't hold a Miss America pageant the years during the war. So, this to me isn't a really big deal. It is not like this is unprecedented. We are in the middle of a national crisis, and I am still on the side of caution. I did see an article where the casino cities in Connecticut are really struggling:

I don't think this is without its problems, though. Will Camille have to serve another year? What about the state titleholders who have committed to go back to school? It does look like the runners-up will have the opportunity to take over the title. But what if you want to compete again? I think the only ones who this might benefit are ones who have aged out and would love to serve a year as their state titleholder. I would hope that none of these young women get hassled about needing to move on with their lives if they have things planned. But right now, nobody is even doing any appearances and who knows what the next year will bring?

On a much brighter note, who knows what the next year will bring! There could be some kind of breakthrough and soon. When we start thinking about kids going back to school, it may still happen at the end of the summer. I hope so, for everyone's sakes. Right now, I think testing needs to be a priority. I think if we had a better way of detecting the virus and being able to better isolate and treat people, we could have better results. We at least know right now that very sadly, the elderly are getting the brunt of this. I currently have loved ones in nursing homes and it is scary as hell thinking about them there. But again, things could change for the better sooner than we think. I sure hope so.

I hope that you are all doing as best as you can right now. We are all just trying to do the best we can.
