Here goes round 2! As with the first night I based on Miss America scoring:
1-3 below average 4-6 average 7-9 above average 10 perfection
DE-played Good Golly Miss Molly on the piano. Does anyone remember Christi Page, Miss Louisiana 1991? She sang and played Great Balls of Fire. If this song had even 1/10th of that energy it would have changed things. I had high hopes for DE after hearing her speak, but this totally puts her out of contention. She had no energy or connection to the fast-paced, fun song. It was only around a 3, and if the judges were being more critical in their scoring it might have been a 2. She just had no connection to the music and was so laid back. It could have been fun, and her costume was great, just a really poor performance.
RI-played Fantastie Impromptu. This song is always done well, and she did a nice job with it. I always enjoy hearing this played for that reason. (My favorite is still Rhapsody in Blue!) It was a solid performance of the song, Leigh’s dress was pretty and elegant. I would give it a solid 7.
GA-did a tap dance to Big Time. There were moments of good in this and moments of mediocre. Sometimes her energy matched the song and other times it didn’t. I would best describe it as inconsistent, though she did have a lot of energy, and that would make it a 6 for me. Of note, her shoe fell off at the end of the song. She carried it off with her. That actually happened to the lovely Constance Dorn, Miss NC 1972 and 1st runner up at the 1972 pageant to Terry Meeuwsen, except it was her ballet slipper and she just kept dancing. You could see the bows untying and she just gingerly stepped out of it.
NV-Sang Somebody To Love. When I think of this song, I think of Brook Kilgarriff, Miss MN 2008 or 2009. She was the standard as far as I am concerned. This wasn’t up to that. It was a very mediocre to average performance. I would put it in the 4-5 range.
NJ-Broadway musical to Gimme Gimme. Alyssa has a very Broadway type voice and performance. She really did have some good showmanship to the later part of the performance. I would give it a strong 6, possibly a low 7.
SC-played a Beethoven piece on the piano. I did not recognize it, but it was described as a Beethoven piece. She did VERY well with it-very technical, very fast paced and she kept up with it. To me, it was the best performance of the night, and I would have had her winning talent, but I felt like IL was right behind her as far as performance. And, this panel was obviously scoring later contestants higher. Me, this was a solid 8.
LA-did a jazz dance to Last Dance. I loved the costume-it was very vibrant and came alive. The performance itself seemed to lack the energy of the song, she didn’t really move that quickly. I think this song works better with a baton performance. I would put in the 4-5 range.
VT-did a speed painting routine. She said that it was going to be a famous woman. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure it out when she turned it upside down. It was supposed to be Rosie the Riveter. I thought she brought some nice energy to her routine, she spoke and added to the energy of it. I wouldn’t have recognized it and it was not up to the par of some others I have seen at Miss America. Or the Haas girl from TN who painted Jesus. I would give this a 5, maybe a 6 because she really did try and make it a high energy production.
OH-danced to Holding Out For a Hero. It’s a good song but also iconic. This was just an average performance. The costume was very nice, I think it worked well for the song and the vibe. I just think sort of like with LA, you have to really match the energy of the song or else it is not memorable. I would give it in the 4-5 range.
MD-played a classic piece on the cello. I was not familiar with it, but I do enjoy a good cello performance. I can’t be certain, but it sounded like she may have hit some sour notes in the beginning of the performance. It lacked a little bit of energy or entertainment value, but I would give it a solid 6 to 7. I have seen better stringed instrument performances over the years, but I can tell she was well trained and devoted a lot of time to her talent.
AR-did a baton routine to Conga by Gloria Estefan. I hate to say it, but she really missed the energy of this song. It was very low energy. If you pick a song that upbeat, you should have the performance to back it up and she just didn’t seem to be having a good time with it. She did add three batons at the end, and that always requires a lot of skill. But just with the low energy of it, I would give it a 4.
NM-did a lyrical dance to a modern version of In The Air Tonight. Her costume was great and looked great on her. You can tell she has some good training behind her, and she did put a lot of energy into the song. It wasn’t anything outstanding, but it was on the better end of average. I would give it a high 6 and possibly low 7 if the judges were generous.
TN-Remember the good old days of bleached blonde bad singing at the Miss Tennessee pageant before they split into Volunteer? LOL the ghost of those days was left behind and came back to haunt Miss TN this year. She sang Here You Come Again in a key about 3 or 4 keys off. She started at the piano and then got up and started swaying around. It was reminiscent of a performance in the time period that song actually came out. It was sooo dated, sooo pageanty. I cannot imagine that someone would have told her it was a good idea. Honestly, it was around a 3 and 2 if it was offensive to the judges sensibilities.
DC-sang Summertime. Much like some of the other vocalists on the previous nights, she had some good and off moments. I don’t think she has a powerful voice and that may be why it she struggled at times. Kim Aiken is the standard bearer for this song, and it was not on that level. Still, it was not bad at all. I would give it a 6, 5 if I was being picky.
FL-danced to Nothing Can Stop Me Now. I thought she did a good enough job. She was one of the better talents in the second group. She had a good form, kept the song flowing nicely, and kept up with the pace of the song. Nice gold costume. I would give it a solid 7
MN-Sang an inspirational song dedicated to her recovery from COVID. I never heard the song before. Oh hell. If I was scoring on heart this got a 10. She had tears in her eyes at the end of the song, and she thought maybe it had destroyed her vocal cords. The gown was very pretty as well. I really, truly hate to say this but the performance was just average, her pitch sounded a bit off and she seemed like she might be struggling at times. But, it was a moral victory for her. I just couldn’t turn off my emotions with the song. Realistically, the performance itself was probably a 5 but sometimes a performance is more about the story behind it.
MA-Danced a lyrical dance to Wind Beneath My Wings, a modern recording of it. I thought she looked very nice, a pretty white costume, it was a very nice performance. She was graceful and seemed in sync with the energy of the music. Well done, I would give it a 7.
UT-sang That’s Life. She made a good attempt at it, but the vocal ability really wasn’t there. There were a lot of times she was off key, had trouble hitting the high notes. It was only around a 3-4.
SD-did a ballet to a song called Bad Day (I never heard it before, it wasn’t that Powter version.) It was just average, it didn’t draw me in much. It wasn’t bad, just kind of forgettable. The costume was very pretty, though. I don’t know why, she kind of reminds me of Jessica Chastain. The performance itself would have been around a 5.
OK-Jazz vocal to Evenings at Seven. I really, really liked the concept of this. I liked her costume, I liked that someone tried something more original. It started out okay, but some of the notes at the end were really sharp and off key. Because of the originality, the fantastic costume, I would give it a 6. Had those not been there it would have been a bit lower.
AZ-did either a lyrical or ballet dance, I did not get the name of the performance. Her costume was very, very pretty. It looked to be a burgundy color with gold trim, very regal. The performance itself wasn’t that strong, but she did look great. I would put it in the 4-5 range.
CO-sang Never Enough. I hate to say this because I had such high hopes for her, but this made her crash back down to earth. She sang in a very flat tone, it might not have been the right key for her or something was off. It just wasn’t very good. I would give it a 4 because she just doesn’t have a great vocal ability.
IL-I believe the name of the song is Hungarian Dance. She played the violin. It is a familiar song if you have heard it. She was good-good technically, appropriate costume and came across very well. It was a very nice performance. Solid 8
AK-sang Let Me Be Your Star. She has a strong voice with some power behind it. I thought perhaps that she might contend for a preliminary win because the judges seemed to love her the night before, and it was one of the better talents of the night. There were a few off notes here and there but overall, she did a great job. Solid 8 from me.
And there is the complete rundown of talent! I am not sure what kind of “strategy” is used when there are only two groups, but I am sure you want to start with talent if it is your stronger competition and wait until the second night if it is not. The overall level was considerably weaker than night 1. And overall, the talent level is just down so far from where it used to be. But that being said, I only saw those really poor talents last night. With the scoring changes, you are not seeing that many abysmal talents making it to the Miss America stage. Even though most would not blow you away, most are decent and enjoyable.
