Subject: MU TALENT

Top of the evening everyone!

I think that Mu talent was a big drop-off from the first night. It's not that there weren't average or subpar talents on night 1, but it kind of seemed like in Mu, nobody really had any standout performances. Alpha had some really enjoyable performances. There was a lot of debate in the threads beneath about what constitutes talent and entertainment. I think a lot of the talents did not engage the audience as did in Alpha. I do think based on some of the people in the audience that Indiana resonated as she did with me. And apparently did Virginia. But there were not any real "wow" moments. Just a lot more average performances. Here is my rundown of talent:

AK-danced to It’s All Coming Back to Me Now by Celine Dion. (I wanted to dance to this song, actually.) Unfortunately, I think Maile had some trouble with it. I don’t know if it was slippery for her, it kind of looked like she might have slipped. 4-5
RI-did an Irish Step Dance. Bridget set the bar SO HIGH last year it’s hard to ever look at Irish Step Dance again without thinking of that standard. Molly didn’t do bad with it at all, however. I would call it average good, maybe 6.5
MS-I think it was the Midnight Aria. I recognized it, I’ve heard it many times before. She did well with it, one of the better in this group. I would give it a solid 7.
MT-Sang the Smash song. It was a big song, I don’t think she hit some of the notes she needed too well, but it was a nice attempt. 5.5
DE-She sang the Amy Winehouse song Valerie. It was kind of interesting-unique, something you don’t hear a lot. It sounded more modern, I give her props for taking on something original. I would say it was energetic, her voice kind of had a modern edge to it. 6
TX-She played “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on the flute. It was more entertaining, but straight out of the 70s. The accompany music was very 70s, it almost reminded me of what you would see in a pageant circa 1971. It was definitely more entertaining than technical. I would give it a 5 as far as performance, 6 on the cheese factor.
IL-Sang Son of a Preacher Man. I don’t know, I am not a big fan of this song in competition. It just never goes well. It’s like Proud Mary-you don’t want to try and imitate the original. Ariel has a nice voice, I just don’t think she got a chance to showcase it very well. 5.5
FL-Didn’t recognize the music, but she did a lyrical dance. I thought it was pretty, actually, and she had a nice costume. One of the better talents of last night. 6.5 to 7
VA-Of course, the science demonstration/experiment. I am looking at how she presented herself-she was energetic and engaged the crowd. I would say that her presentation probably won her the win. She had enthusiasm, and there wasn’t a lot of other enthusiasm last night. I think just the energy of it was what drew the judges in. 8
KY-Sang Maybe This Time. Also a song we’ve seen many times over, but a decent performance. I would put it in the average category.6
IN-Sang You Will Be Found. It was a lovely, lovely performance. Tiara has a huge voice and she really connected with the emotions of the song. I *hope* we get to see it.
WV-did a baton twirling routine. Unfortunately, she did drop her baton once. It wasn’t too bad, but it was noticeable. It was probably hard because MO had such a good presentation the night before. It did have some good energy though. 6
WY-Tap dance to 9 to 5. Again like with TX, a little old fashioned, but it was cute nonetheless.
NV-Did a comedic monologue. She did impressions of other people and had some funny moments. It wasn’t outstanding, but it was a nice change of pace. 6.5
NE-Sang Vanessa Williams 😊 It was a good choice for her. I think this is actually a good song for someone who isn’t a soprano. It has a nice melody. I have a good memory-Shawntel Smith sang this in the Macy’s Parade in 1995. I would say Allie’s performance was maybe a 5.5 to 6. It wasn’t bad in any way, just a little laid back.
MD-Played The Swan on the cello. She had a nice performance, wasn’t anything outstanding, but pleasant to hear. 6
ME-I want to say this was a Lindsay Sterling song, she played violin. It had some energy, I put it in the good average range. 6 to 6.5
MI-Sang Feeling Good. If I never, ever, ever, never, ever never ever ever hear this song again at a pageant I will be none the happier. But I doubt I will get my wish. That being said, it’s usually a song for someone with a limited vocal ability. When Mallory started to get into some of the higher notes and more dynamics of the performance, she went off key. I really think it was only a 4.
WA-did a tap dance. It was an energetic dance, I enjoyed the energy of it. I would say that it was probably the best dancer of the evening. 7
LA-sang I Will Always Love You. Again like some of the talents, it’s a huge song to take on. She has a decent voice, but it was just too big to take on for the high notes, I thought. I would give it a 6.
WI-Did a tap dance. It was a little less energetic than WA, it was an average performance. 5.5
NM-Did a hip hop dance. I thought it was good to try something different, and I give her props for it. The only thing is, I am far from an expert on all things hip hop, but it didn’t seem that remarkable. I would say 6 for the overall attempt, but a 5 for the dancing.
MN-Sang Nature Boy. It was kind of a musical theater presentation. I thought she did well with it. She kind of looked like Mrs. Maisel. 6.5 to 7
AZ-played the pageant standard Habanera. It was an average kind of good performance 6.
ID-I am someone who really wish that we would see actual talents instead of contestants just taking on something pageant acceptable. Grace chose to demonstrate her ceramics talent, but the problem was is that you had a short time to get in what you needed to do. Years ago, we saw sewing demonstrations, some contestants would come out with something they had already drawn, etc. I am not sure how you would have scored this, but I do give her a lot of credit for actually demonstrating something she was good and talented at. I am not talented in any way with ceramics, and I enjoyed it. I couldn’t have given it anything more than an average score, but I thought with maybe some more time it would have been more effective. It was in no way weak, just different.
NJ-operatic vocal. She had a solid performance, maybe not as strong as some of the Alpha group, but she was good. I would say 7 to 7.5.

My next post will be the big post about each contestant. Just because the weather sucks pretty badly, we may wait until later to travel or change plans. Everyone's concerns about the weather in New England in December were quite valid. The only good thing is that they are used to this and much more prepared. Today SUCKED.

[> Subject: Moderator thank you for your excellent review. I agree with about 90% of what you said . I guess you can call me a "talent snob" because in my opinion I don't think that a ceramics demonstration is a talent. Ceramics is something that you take it as an elective in college. It reminds me of what Woody Allen once said about "swimming"'-it's not really a sport it's something that you do to keep from drowning. And I've already made it very clear what I think about Miss Virginia. I don't think that's a talent either. All she did was pour chemicals into a beaker after giving a pedestrian speech about science. Further I'd like to say that I think that Michigan and DC are fighting neck-and-neck for the two worst talents .I thought their voices were just very very poor. Glad about Miss Indiana and I hope she gets into at least the top 15. Other comments: I would not have given Nevada that high of a score and I would have given Texas a higher score than you maybe a 7..

[> Subject: Thanks everyone for your great comments! I do enjoy hearing everyone's perspectives. I think we are all in agreement for the most part on the Mu talent. Thanks for the information on Florida's song. I am not too familiar with the popular Christian music artists, but it was a nice song.

>Top of the evening everyone!
>
>I think that Mu talent was a big drop-off from the
>first night. It's not that there weren't average or
>subpar talents on night 1, but it kind of seemed like
>in Mu, nobody really had any standout performances.
>Alpha had some really enjoyable performances. There
>was a lot of debate in the threads beneath about what
>constitutes talent and entertainment. I think a lot
>of the talents did not engage the audience as did in
>Alpha. I do think based on some of the people in the
>audience that Indiana resonated as she did with me.
>And apparently did Virginia. But there were not any
>real "wow" moments. Just a lot more average
>performances. Here is my rundown of talent:
>
>AK-danced to It’s All Coming Back to Me Now by
>Celine Dion. (I wanted to dance to this song,
>actually.) Unfortunately, I think Maile had some
>trouble with it. I don’t know if it was slippery
>for her, it kind of looked like she might have
>slipped. 4-5
>RI-did an Irish Step Dance. Bridget set the bar SO
>HIGH last year it’s hard to ever look at Irish Step
>Dance again without thinking of that standard. Molly
>didn’t do bad with it at all, however. I would call
>it average good, maybe 6.5
>MS-I think it was the Midnight Aria. I recognized it,
>I’ve heard it many times before. She did well with
>it, one of the better in this group. I would give it
>a solid 7.
>MT-Sang the Smash song. It was a big song, I don’t
>think she hit some of the notes she needed too well,
>but it was a nice attempt. 5.5
>DE-She sang the Amy Winehouse song Valerie. It was
>kind of interesting-unique, something you don’t hear
>a lot. It sounded more modern, I give her props for
>taking on something original. I would say it was
>energetic, her voice kind of had a modern edge to it.
>6
>TX-She played “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on
>the flute. It was more entertaining, but straight out
>of the 70s. The accompany music was very 70s, it
>almost reminded me of what you would see in a pageant
>circa 1971. It was definitely more entertaining than
>technical. I would give it a 5 as far as performance,
>6 on the cheese factor.
>IL-Sang Son of a Preacher Man. I don’t know, I am
>not a big fan of this song in competition. It just
>never goes well. It’s like Proud Mary-you don’t
>want to try and imitate the original. Ariel has a
>nice voice, I just don’t think she got a chance to
>showcase it very well. 5.5
>FL-Didn’t recognize the music, but she did a lyrical
>dance. I thought it was pretty, actually, and she had
>a nice costume. One of the better talents of last
>night. 6.5 to 7
>VA-Of course, the science demonstration/experiment. I
>am looking at how she presented herself-she was
>energetic and engaged the crowd. I would say that her
>presentation probably won her the win. She had
>enthusiasm, and there wasn’t a lot of other
>enthusiasm last night. I think just the energy of it
>was what drew the judges in. 8
>KY-Sang Maybe This Time. Also a song we’ve seen
>many times over, but a decent performance. I would
>put it in the average category.6
>IN-Sang You Will Be Found. It was a lovely, lovely
>performance. Tiara has a huge voice and she really
>connected with the emotions of the song. I *hope* we
>get to see it.
>WV-did a baton twirling routine. Unfortunately, she
>did drop her baton once. It wasn’t too bad, but it
>was noticeable. It was probably hard because MO had
>such a good presentation the night before. It did
>have some good energy though. 6
>WY-Tap dance to 9 to 5. Again like with TX, a little
>old fashioned, but it was cute nonetheless.
>NV-Did a comedic monologue. She did impressions of
>other people and had some funny moments. It wasn’t
>outstanding, but it was a nice change of pace. 6.5
>NE-Sang Vanessa Williams 😊 It was a good choice
>for her. I think this is actually a good song for
>someone who isn’t a soprano. It has a nice melody.
>I have a good memory-Shawntel Smith sang this in the
>Macy’s Parade in 1995. I would say Allie’s
>performance was maybe a 5.5 to 6. It wasn’t bad in
>any way, just a little laid back.
>MD-Played The Swan on the cello. She had a nice
>performance, wasn’t anything outstanding, but
>pleasant to hear. 6
>ME-I want to say this was a Lindsay Sterling song, she
>played violin. It had some energy, I put it in the
>good average range. 6 to 6.5
>MI-Sang Feeling Good. If I never, ever, ever, never,
>ever never ever ever hear this song again at a pageant
>I will be none the happier. But I doubt I will get my
>wish. That being said, it’s usually a song for
>someone with a limited vocal ability. When Mallory
>started to get into some of the higher notes and more
>dynamics of the performance, she went off key. I
>really think it was only a 4.
>WA-did a tap dance. It was an energetic dance, I
>enjoyed the energy of it. I would say that it was
>probably the best dancer of the evening. 7
>LA-sang I Will Always Love You. Again like some of
>the talents, it’s a huge song to take on. She has a
>decent voice, but it was just too big to take on for
>the high notes, I thought. I would give it a 6.
>WI-Did a tap dance. It was a little less energetic
>than WA, it was an average performance. 5.5
>NM-Did a hip hop dance. I thought it was good to try
>something different, and I give her props for it. The
>only thing is, I am far from an expert on all things
>hip hop, but it didn’t seem that remarkable. I
>would say 6 for the overall attempt, but a 5 for the
>dancing.
>MN-Sang Nature Boy. It was kind of a musical theater
>presentation. I thought she did well with it. She
>kind of looked like Mrs. Maisel. 6.5 to 7
>AZ-played the pageant standard Habanera. It was an
>average kind of good performance 6.
>ID-I am someone who really wish that we would see
>actual talents instead of contestants just taking on
>something pageant acceptable. Grace chose to
>demonstrate her ceramics talent, but the problem was
>is that you had a short time to get in what you needed
>to do. Years ago, we saw sewing demonstrations, some
>contestants would come out with something they had
>already drawn, etc. I am not sure how you would have
>scored this, but I do give her a lot of credit for
>actually demonstrating something she was good and
>talented at. I am not talented in any way with
>ceramics, and I enjoyed it. I couldn’t have given
>it anything more than an average score, but I thought
>with maybe some more time it would have been more
>effective. It was in no way weak, just different.
>NJ-operatic vocal. She had a solid performance, maybe
>not as strong as some of the Alpha group, but she was
>good. I would say 7 to 7.5.
>
