Winners? can't remember, no program book
Quality of pageant? for $20, not bad
Organization? girls waited on stage (all 40, ages 3 to 16) for a half hour for winners to be called during tallying (yes, a half hour!)
Judges? no clue--no program, couldn't hear emcee well enough (poor sound system)
Number of contestants per division? probably 10, about 40 girls total, four divisions
Director? wouldn't have known who she was if I wasn't there earlier in the day (no program, didn't announce her)
Prizes? runnerups got very small trophies (too small). Winnrs got very large ones. Nothing for every contestants.

I agee with you the outcomes were bizarre! Not sure what the judges were looking at. The wait on stage was like a zoo, never have been to a pagent like that or will be to that one again.

Well behaved and very polite young ladies from the youngest to the oldest.
Never had a problem with any of them.
Yes, the wait seemed long for the Queens to be announced and (we let the little ones get their energy out,) but that sometimes happens.
Everyone can not be Queens, as much as we would like.
We only had two Canadians, as four could not make it.All the rest was from Maine.
Lovely girls and very talented.

My daughter Natalie did this pageant. She was the 1st runner up for the 3-6 year olds. I have no idea who the winner was, as someone mentioned there were no program books. Eva York won the 7-9 year old group. I can't remember any of the other winners. For $20 dollars I feel it was great experience for my daughter. There was a long wait on stage before awards, but I think some of that had to do with several ties that the judges had to break. I was a disapointed that we did not find out who the judges were. Two were older ladies and one was a younger lady. We were not allowed to see scores either which was unusual. It would of been nice to see what areas my daughter needed work on....and for the girls who were tied it would of been nice for them to know they had tied. My daughter Natalie had a hard time while on stage. There were X's marked, but for some reason it was in an upside down T, not the normal T shape. Natalie is only 4 and has practiced the normal pageant T walk. She had no clue what to do and did start to cry while I was getting her ready for causal because she was so confused. On stage she did her own thing. Only the Winner, 1st and 2nd runner up went away with something. We saw many little ones crying. I think there should of been some sort of participation gift, even if a small gift from a $1 store. I hope they will have this again next year, it was worth it. Natalie did have a good time, and did make some new friends! ~Sasha

Winners? No idea. No program book, not even a list of contestants' names.

Quality of pageant? No comment.

Organization? Started 15+ minutes late, which is always hard on the little ones because when they have to hurry to get ready only to wait around, it is hard to have patience.

Judges? Former Miss New Brunswick who was a Miss International winner, Miss International director, and someone else who helps with Miss International. I didn't get their names, and there was no program.

Number of contestants per division? About 40 overall, not sure of the break-down of divisions.

Director? Seemed a little frazzled.

Prizes? Only the top 3 won prizes, and the runner-up trophies were tiny. Not sure what the cash prizes were. It wasn't announced.

I thought this pagent was very unorgainzed, hot I do not think they had a clue. Took forever to pick the winners, would like to have seen the scores for the teen pagent. Not sure what the judges were looking for. This pagent is a good one not to bother with again.

Judges had a tough time breaking ties. The young ladies were all so very close in scores.
The pageant went very smooth except for the decisions of winners at end.
All judging criteria is on the website.
A great bunch of girls.
Very polite and well behaved.
Everyone can not be the Queen.
A lot of local girls, who will be back next year.
They had fun, just wanted to do a pageant.
It will be around next year and I'am sure it will be a great turn out again. Thanks to all the beautiful girls.

From the $20 entry, they should be able to spend $2 on a little trophy.

I will start by saying that in the opinion of MANY there were some very strange out comes. If you look at the website what the judges were looking for, then base it on what you saw on stage, it was obvious who should of been in the top 3 in each catagory. HOWEVER, some of the girls who do a lot of pagenats, know there stuff, and did everything 100% correct did not place at all. But, if you stumble, forget what you are saying during introduction, and do your own thing you win? Doesn't make sense. I saw a lot of younger girls crying because they did not get anything. There were at least 10 or more in the 3-6 year old group. Yes, the winners got lovely sashes, but the princess were hand made gotty. Letters were pressed on with a star half falling off. There were "a lot" of ties, but contestants were not allowed to see score sheets, strange....Its funny how a lot of "LOCAL" girls won. This is not one I would recomend unless you live in the area.

There were MANY tears on and off stage, but a lot of the girls were, in my opinion, too young to be in a pageant like this. It was a long day for them! Developmentally, kids this young don't have the patience for all the waiting required for an event that starts in the afternoon and goes into the evening, especially those little ones who are used to napping and have 7 p.m. bedtimes. Just my opinion.

Yes, I have an update of the miss north star pagent. It sucked! Have not heard a positive thing about it except from the lady whom run the pagent. Think she should find another side line. The kids crying and running around on stage is not a real good thing to see. This must have been low budget, they did not even give the girls a flower or anything. Heard that if you are not from calais area you can forget "their pagents". Back to the drawing board. Where these judges qualified, and how ? Why did you not let the girls see their score? I find that a little strange. Carla

Susan Arsenault-Benedetto, dance instructor for 40 years, director of the Miss International Scholarship Pageant for 30+ years

Melissa Wilson Wright, former Miss International, former Miss New Brunswick, has judged other pageants including Miss Eastern Maine, works with adolescents as a math teacher

Sorry, I didn't get the last judge's name, however, she is affiliated with the Miss International Scholarship Pageant, among other things I'm certain

To say the judges are not qualified is silly! I, too, was surprised with some of the outcomes, mainly in the teen division, but like you "Carla" I only saw two of the three portions--no one sees the interviews but the judges!

First of all I want to say that I watched the Northeast Star Pageant and thought all the girls did very well. Some of the little ones were just a riot. As for the older girls, what a bunch of beautiful young ladies. Truthfully there were girls in the older group that I thought would place but didn't. As a director, judge, former pageant competitor, and above all pageant mom, I know that interview plays a large roll in the outcome. Just when you think someone has won onstage, interview can change everything. So I think it is important for everyone to remember that words can hurt. None of the young ladies deserve to feel bad about themselves. I think that everyone needs to take example from the young ladies who didn't place in the pageant. These young ladies congratulated the winners. I witnessed one child who received nothing, be extremely excited for her friend who did. These are true pageant competitors. A crown fades and a title is forgotten, but friendships last forever. If the worst I had ever gotten out of life was to lose in a pageant then I would have been happy. Trust me when I say there are much worse things out there that can happen. Just look at the reason East Coast Angels was started.
For the cost of the pageant, I thought the prizes were good. I looked on their site and according to, it says that only the winners receive prizes, and explains what those prizes were. So I think that everyone pretty much knew going in that if you didn't place, you walked away with nothing. Every pageant has it's glitches. I haven't been to one yet that something couldn't have been done a little different. All in all I enjoyed watching the pageant and hope to be able to watch it again next year. I also look forward to seeing you all at ECA in December. :)

Narrator,First of all there is more than one person at this address, and more than one attended the pagent. I would not think that is entertaining to watch these kids crying and carrying on. Just because you have taught dancing for 50 years or been in a pagent does not make you a judge.
[> [> [> [> Subject: No, but if you've taught dance for 40+ years and directed a pageant for 30+ (one that up until recently was a Miss Maine preliminary), then, yes, that does make you quite qualified.

Jannell is correct on many points. One being, WE don't see interviews, so we have no way of knowing what the scores might be for that. As far as the judges, we drove 2 hours to get to Calais for the pageant. I would have been more upset at it being cancelled after going all that way, than by what the director chose to do: find fill-ins as quickly as possible. Yes, it was hot (hey, it is August...) But you can't blame anyone for that except Mother Nature. Some people have mentioned they felt that only "local" girls won... Well, as I said, we are from 2 hours away, and Eva won her division. So we aren't local. Until last week, the only contact I had with the direcor was emails. As awards were going out, I wasn't sure how Eva had done. I thought it would be close as to if she placed. But on the flip side, there have been times I felt sure she would place, and she didn't get anything. You just never know. I have always talked to Eva before any pageant, reminding her about good sportsmanship, and smiling, even if she doesn't win. We will be at this pageant again next year, helping out, and when Eva is able to compete in the next age division, we will be there again. Nothing goes as planned in life, and I think the director did the best she could under the circumstances, most of which were not in her control. We had a lot of fun, and I for one loved all the little ones, they were adorable! I also liked Tannis, Little Miss International, who helped walk with some of the more nervous of the younger ones. She did a great job!
