I don't normally bother with dance compilation videos but this one was great fun, mainly because (in my opinion) the Irish steps and moves are simply WAY AHEAD of the salsa, jiving etc. There is something classy Irish Dancing that makes it the best.

I found the YouTube Video "Irish Dance Magic" charming in its own way. Certainly the Pop music added a certain liveliness, and what was remarkable was the way the steps seemed perfectly timed to the overlaid music. BUT, and its a big but, surely this is just RiverDance gone mad? In other words, you can call it Dance but not IRISH Dance?

3rd Deegan

4 Hands:

1st McQuaid
2nd O'Connor
3rd Deegan
4th McQuaid
5th Deegan

If anyone knows any other details, what dances were done, pictures online anywhere, please let us know!

Besides Deegan, who danced last year and who have been in other overseas ceili comps, I've never heard any of those teams before; are they new?

Hello,
I was wondering if any adult dancers out there have competed in a two hand reel comp at a feis. This is the one dance that I would love to do at a feis and others I dance with have expressed the same. I know they have two hands for younger dancers. I wish more midwest feises would include adult two hands. What do you think?

I posted a few months ago asking which comps would entice adult dancers to travel for a feis. The syllabus & registration for the Victoria School Feis is up on feisworx now. Adult comps include: the 7 dances for the 3 levels (beginner, novice & prizewinner.) Trophies include the treble reel and an adult championship special (a first for our region!) Our TC is very supportive of adult dancing and there will be a number of us competing too in solos & figures. We'd love to have you come join us - and hopefully for a pint after!
All the adult comps and figures will be held on Friday night (May 1.) For those with kids, championship level (also having solos comps and championship) are on Saturday. Sunday schedule is beginner-prizewinner solos.
Come visit beautiful Victoria, BC on the west coast of Canada - frequent port on Alaskan cruises. The feis site (Victoria Conference Center Crystal Gardens) is in the heart of downtown Victoria, a block away from the Empress Hotel, Parliament Buildings, BC Museum, etc. There is lots to do for the entire family within walking distance - go whale watching, shop downtown, see an IMAX movie at the museum, discover beautiful gardens, have high tea at the Empress, explore the numerous brewpubs...
Information is on feisworx and also on www.victoriairishdancers.com.
Hope to see you in Victoria! Please ask if you need any info or help with travel ideas.

I just saw a post on dance.net and I was really - I mean *really* - surprised. It seems that there was an adult special competition at Winterfeis that was done like a championship for adults with reel or slip-jig and a NON-traditional set dance! Did anyone here go and could tell us about it? I see 5 placers; how many danced?

This, to me, is the PERFECT solution for adults!! I wish every feis had this; I'd feis all year long!!!

PS Love the assortment of dresses; very pretty!

The syllabus for the Big Apple Feis is up, and it has great opportunities for adults!

However, I'm a little confused with the Adult Championships - The syllabus lists it like Prelim. Is that how it will be? 3 (or 2 1/2) soft steps & 3 (or 2 1/2) hard. Is the hard shoe fast or slow?

Hi! Im new here. Obviously :) Sorry if I seem a little nervous. I have been looking around for ages for a place that has adult dancers on it with advice and info. Its hard to come by. I am going to start competing starting in May and didn't know if anyone had any advice. My teacher can only help so much, but since my school doesn't really encourage their adults to compete (only 2 others currently do) info is very hard to come by. My best friend has danced as a juvenile for the last 11 yrs but she tells me that the rules aren't very similar. Any help would be great. I guess Im just looking to find a place to fit in, Im 26 and plan to be doing this a while.

If you're competing an adult 8-hand at NANs, do you do one dance, then recall and do a second dance, or do you just do the one dance and the results are judged on that?

Ladies and Gents in And Overs and Adults too,

Aside from class (2X a week), and working full time, how do you train for Irish dance? Could you all share what ya do? I'm doing 10 min. pilates via dvd at least 3X a week (trying to do it every morning), class 2X a week, practice Sat./Sun. for at least an hour, squeeze a practice in during the week, and am trying to do a little 20min. swim before heading off to work. I'm injury prone so I'm trying to get a bit more athletic/strong. Talk to me friends, how do you get the most bang for your buck outside of practice? Thanks! I love practicing but hate "training" exercise that's not practicing, ...

Hey Friends, I'm joining the ranks of the And Overs this month. I've got my dress, have my hair, .. now I need poodle socks that don't look dirty. No matter how much I bleach 'em, they still look funky. What's the difference between champ length and knee length? What length should I get? Last but not least, any good ideas for wigging. I have the Sinead and have been practicing the swoop, but understand the swoop is no more (liked the swoop). Any links or pics of how to put on wig sans swoop? Thanks all! I'm excited and scared out of my mind, but will enjoy libations to celebrate surviving a day of feisin'. I still need to work on my "head is up but I'm staring at the floor" look.

Registration is now open at Feisworx for the 6th annual Feis Orange County which will be held on February 21-22, 2009.

We are very excited about our new venue this year! The hotel is the Doubletree Hotel Anaheim/Orange County, 100 The City Drive, Orange, California. Hotel guests also receive complimentary use of the LA Fitness that is located in the parking lot. The hotel is very close to Disneyland, and has a “Disney Desk” in the lobby where you can purchase park tickets. The hotel operates their own dedicated shuttle to and from the parks and Downtown Disney all day and evening. The hotel has recently undergone a major renovation and is very beautiful. They have a lovely pool area, tennis courts, a basketball court, and a Starbucks on the premises.

The preliminary schedule is all championships, all ages; all championship specials; 14&O First Feis, U15 and 15&O Beginner through Prizewinner and special competitions; Catherine O’Connor Memorial Special, music competition, and all adult competitions and adult special will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2009. Our fun Mardi Gras “Fat Tuesday” Special will be held at the end of the day on Saturday and our “Anything Goes” Charity Special will be held on Saturday and Sunday—all proceeds for that special go to “Talk About Curing Autism”. See the syllabus for additional details.

Our website www.fearon-oconnor.com will be updated soon with additional details. The syllabus and all details are listed on www.feisworx.com. You may also register and pay for your entry at Feisworx.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at feisorangecounty@hotmail.com.

Come and enjoy a great weekend in Orange County. You can spend a day dancing and spend a day at Disneyland, California Adventure, Downtown Disney or at The Block. There is a lot to do, not just for dancers, but for the rest of the family! See you there!

I have a complaint. I hate the fact that they keep our results until last when the ballroom is almost empty. I sat talking with another dancer who I see every year at MAR's and enjoy competing against him. Having people like him in ID makes it so much fun(Mr Party Punch man:)

They should announce us first to show the kids that you can still compete when you are older and just how much fun it is. I sat behind some parents of younger dancers a few years ago when they actually announced us first. the first words out of their mouth were "Oh God the adults. Why do they even bother with this ? Its such a waste of time. To which I cleared my throat very loudly as I passed by to collect my 1st place. As I walked by I looked at them and said "We are waste? Really? " (With a big smile on my face)

These young dancers are going to get older. lets see how they feel when they are in our division!

Well, the adult comps are completed and now it's just a matter of who places where. Here's a quick roundup at this point:

Ladies 8:
Two Culkin teams - Cross Reel and Trip to the Cottage. There was no mixed 8 hand this year.

Mixed 4:
Aoibhneas an Rince and Culkin danced Humors. Mulligan danced the reel.

Ladies 4:
13 teams competed -- so great to see so many teams there.
Four sets of Humors: Aoibhneas an Rince, Culkin, Rhythm of Ireland and Nashville Irish Step Dancers.
Everyone else did Reel, including Drake, Scott-Ellis, Hogan, O'Neill -James, Shandon (who danced it with overs throughout), Mulligan and three teams from Culkin.

I'm talking dancers who compete in "adults", not and-over dancers who also happen to be adults. At WRO a few years back, I know adults who danced with kids in a Dance Drama. I got all excited that I might be eligible to participate in a Dance Drama -- but my TC said that wasn't allowed by the rules. I'm not wanting to bust anyone -- I just want authority to say it is okay.
