| Subject: MISS EARTH 2009: AT THE HOMESTRETCH (Group 1-3 including the conclusion) | |
Author: JV [Edit] |
Date Posted: Sat, Nov 21 2009, 13:53:40 MISS EARTH 2009: AT THE HOMESTRETCH by Joseph Vitug Hate to admit that attrition has occurred again in this year’s Miss Earth pageant, as the number of delegates declined from 85 last year to 80. Despite earlier confirmations, perennial participants Bolivia and Bosnia & Herzegovina failed to show up along with Croatia, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Malawi, and Romania. Botswana was disqualified for being too short at 1.51m. Nicaragua had to back out because its candidate encountered visa issues. Vietnam’s representative encountered an injury before competition was about to begin. Other perennials like Finland and Germany didn’t even bother to field a representative. However, as the weeks progressed it turns out that the quality of this year’s delegates prove to be of a highly competitive caliber—there are a whole slew of worthy contenders vying for the 18 slots in the finals, so a satisfying mix of finalists is going to be extremely likely this year, even as some might lament on a few possible shut-outs. I am optimistic that the attrition will likely be stemmed next year. This time I will organize my homestretch review instead of a straightforward alphabetical manner into alphabetically according to their groupings during the various pre-pageant activities. So without further ado, let us begin with… GROUP ONE This group was loaded with major powerhouse contenders. Though the five chosen for the shortlist in the Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown competitions were worthy choices, I felt there were several others who deserved to be shortlisted also—too bad they had to limit to five in each competition, and three of those slots were filled by the same favorites. Three of the Cocoa Babes and two of the Crème Confections were among those that were overshadowed by the favorites. Anyway, without further ado, here are the ladies in Group 1: ALBANIA – Suada Saliu. Her gawky pre-arrival photos and then that fright of wildly shocking curls early in her stay may have made fans, wags, and pundits shudder at her being, but as the days wore on, those curls were tamed and she started looking more attractive—more akin to, say, “Friends” star Lisa Kudrow. She turned out to be surprisingly a worthwhile delegate. AUSTRALIA – Melinda Heffernan. Normally, if you are searching for the best delegate from Oceania, typically fingers would be pointing toward this country. Well, in the real world she would qualify as attractive, but in a stratified milieu like this pageant, she was easily overshadowed by the embarrassment of riches out there. BAHAMAS – Krystal Brown. She may not be one of the Cocoa Babes, but she was among those who placed the Caribbean region at a stratified level in this year’s pageant. She was a complete package of intelligence, fitness, and attractiveness. CHINA – Yan Xu. There might be a few who might find her cute, but to my eyes, she was probably one of the weakest fielded by this rising pageant powerhouse in any Grand Slam pageant. Her winning a sponsor’s prize (because of the heritage of the owners of the resort) should be consolation enough. COLOMBIA – Alejandra Castillo. Prior to her arrival, pageant pundits barely paid attention to her as some felt that maybe her studio photos were heavily photoshopped as she may not be as impressive as portrayed. But when she finally arrived, it turned out she was a driven, polished, and competitive contender who clearly knew how to make the right impression and was a complete package at a stratified level. She is on line to sustain her country’s finalist showing in this pageant. CUBA – Jamilette Gaxiola. Her pre-arrival photos may seem that she’s a classic beauty. But in person, her features were actually a tad more exotic, but she was still undeniably drop-dead gorgeous and beautiful—I saw minor traces of Miss Earth 2003 Dania Prince in her features. Another key standout quality she possessed were her ample bosom, which she often showcased with great aplomb in swimsuit and national costume—she is my BB Sweepstakes winner for this year’s pageant. Her voluptuousness eventually won me over, and her features grew on me that I do foresee she could conceivably land in the Top 8. CZECH REPUBLIC – Tereza Budkova. Because this group was laden with top-tier contenders and the Filipinos were fixated with the Latinas, this drop-dead-gorgeous lass had some difficulty generating much needed buzz within this country—she was not short-listed in the swimsuit and gown rounds. But her beauty couldn’t be denied, and she does have some passionate support that resulted in her earning the much-deserved Miss Photogenic award. If justice would prevail, she should also sustain the four-years-and-counting semifinals streak this country enjoyed in this pageant. DENMARK – Patricia Tjørnelund. Her appearance vis-à-vis her name made me recall about some preconceived notions one might have when one hears a very Scandinavian name. For instance, I could recall regarding famous Swedish chef Marcus Samuelsson, chef and co-owner of the New York restaurant Aquavit—one might think he would be tall, Caucasian and blonde, not short, black, and African (he’s Ethiopian adopted by Swedish parents). The same notion may apply to this lady, as instead of blonde and Caucasian, she turned out to be dusky and biracial. She has a gorgeous face, and photos may seem to show she has a trim torso. Unfortunately, she has one glaring flaw—her legs were wide and stumpily short in proportion to her upper body. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Mariel Garcia. Here is the first member of the Cocoa Babes. Some pundits and fans may have thought that she sometimes projected like a drag queen, but I thought her features still remained undeniably feminine and pretty, and her lean and trim supermodel’s figure deserved to be reckoned with. I had compared her to Miss Universe 2002 contestant Ruth Ocumarez, and I meant it as a compliment, though it may have also raised concerns that even if she was more gorgeous than 2007 semifinalist Themys Febriel, she might end up missing the final cut similar to the highly regarded Ruth. Still keeping my fingers crossed, though. GABON – Marlyne Lea Ayenne. She is an attractive contender from Africa, but this year the Africans were clearly overshadowed by the Caribbean Cocoa Babes. Her memorably moment was her African booty shaking dance during her costume presentation. GEORGIA – Nona Diakonidze. Though there were some pageant pundits who initially found her features a bit too vampish (Cruella de Vil was the usual term employed), I always thought she was gorgeous from the get-go. Besides, those very features tend to be highly favored during pre-judging—this was how Bosnia & Herzegovina made the cut in 2004 and 2006—I had been describing the look as “Bosnian Vamp” for the past few years now. Because of those features alone, it is highly conceivable that she’ll earn herself a slot in the Top 18. GUADELOUPE – Mary-Ange Seymour. She’s trim and attractive and also another one who made the Caribbean region the region to reckon with in this year’s pageant. HONG KONG – Wang Shan Shan. Well, this lady was better-looking than Miss China, though she seemed to be in the same boat as Miss China in terms of level of sponsor support and preparedness—but they did seem to be sporting more-than-decent gowns during the Evening Gown Finals event at Casino Filipino. HUNGARY- Korinna Kocsis. I could see how she was able to edge out the two Crème Confections and the three Cocoa Babes in her group to be shortlisted in the Swimsuit Competition—she exuded a laid-back beach beauty vibe (sorry, Miss World) with her mass of wavy brunette tresses, trim physique, and tanned complexion. If we based it on looks alone she has the inside track into the Top 18. But I have a major issue with her communication skills—during the Press Presentation and National Costume Competition, she spoke as if there was a muffler in her mouth—I don’t know if Hungarians who attempt to speak English really sounded like that. If her sash said Bosnia & Herzegovina she would’ve probably gotten away with it, though she doesn’t have the “Bosnian Vamp” look the way Miss Georgia has. But let’s give her credit that she’s the best delegate ever fielded by this country to this pageant. INDONESIA – Nadine Zamira Syarief. Onstage and whenever she opened her mouth, I thought she was a possible upset choice who could conceivably land in the Top 18. She was a polished presence onstage, with an elegantly dignified bearing that was exhibited during the National Costume Competition. But her main asset was her superb communication skills—her English was not 100% impeccable as I observed a few minor grammatical lapses in her speeches, but it was way stronger than what you would have expected from a typical Indonesian, and she could communicate her commitment to the cause very clearly and effectively. However, in a more casual setting, her looks turned out to be rather ordinary. Could she parlay her stage skills, intelligence, and gab to overcome her disadvantages and make the final cut? ISRAEL – Noy Michaelov. Her facial features were not my cup of tea, but I have to concede she was a polished, worthwhile contender who deserved some credit. JAMAICA – Jenaae Jackson. She actually has all the qualities to make the final cut, as she was the best delegate fielded by this country so far, but amongst the Cocoa Babes, she was the one who didn’t seem to know how to capitalize on her bountiful assets (not necessarily physical like Miss Cuba) to its fullest as she tended to be not as assertive as she could’ve been. JAPAN – Tomomi Takada. It’s coincidental that two ladies who resembled standout non-finalist contenders at the legendary 2002 Miss Universe pageant were pitted in the same group. I had mentioned about Miss Dominican Republic’s resemblance to her countrywoman, Ruth Ocumarez. Now, meet Karen Loren Agustin, but wearing the sash of Japan. Her looks may not be for conventional tastes, but she does strike a fierce presence onstage. For her stage skills, competitive drive, and her lean-and-trim figure, she is arguably the strongest fielded by this country in this pageant. LATVIA – Diana Kubasova. I had mentioned in my “Cocoa Babes and Crème Confections” article how I thought she was the blonde who could break the long “Blonde-less Drought” in the finals. She has the gorgeousness and the figure to pull it off. Unfortunately, that mantle seemed to have been taken away from her as Miss France just blossomed during the later stages of the competition; no-showing during the Evening Gown Competition finals also doesn’t seem to be a good sign. I’m still keeping the faith as she was simply that beautiful. MARTINIQUE – Pascale Nelide. No special awards nor sponsor prizes that I know of. I’m baffled why she wasn’t getting a lion’s share of attention that she deserved, because she oozed so much charm when she appeared, and her features were simply so stunning in my eyes. Just because she couldn’t speak English that well? Well, that didn’t stop Murielle Celimene from becoming first runner-up five years ago, right? Of all the underrated gems I have cited in my previous article, this lady would be the one I would be rooting fervently for to succeed. PAKISTAN – Ayesha Gilani. She was the most polished Pakistani representative ever sent to this pageant—I simply adored her splendidly shimmering national costume. And she’s also great-looking and trim enough to hold her own amidst this formidable field. POLAND – Izabella Wilczek. Most pundits underrated this lady prior to her arrival, but things changed when she landed on our shores as she exuded charisma. She also turned out to be a polished complete package with fierce stage chops that she is turning into one of the Europeans-most-likely in such a cutthroat group. Her dramatic gown presentation at Casino Filipino was one that I’ll remember for a long time. SOUTH AFRICA – Chanel Grantham. She’s a tad plainer that what we typically expect from a South African representative, but she does have the gab and personality that was the usual trademark of a South African beauty queen. SPAIN – Alejandra Echevarria. There were pundits who are not into her features, but examining them up closely, she reminded me of a legendary Filipina beauty queen—Miss World 1973 1st runner-up (and shoulda-been winner especially since the winner was dethroned) Evangeline Pascual. She was likewise a stratified complete package of beauty, brains, figure, stage presence, and even environmental commitment. So it’s not surprising how she was shortlisted in both swimsuit and evening gown. I also observed how she (or her handlers) integrated the environmental message in a subtly symbolic way, with the green color of her national costume and evening gown. She is poised to garner an element in this pageant. TONGA – Mary Greatz. First, a welcome debut for this country in this pageant. And considering that the little that I know of this country made me think that they would probably send someone overweight or out-of-shape, here came this trim and attractive lady whose unique feature was that one of her teeth was capped in gold. She’s a surprisingly worthwhile contender who clearly was no cellar-dweller. UKRAINE – Karina Golovata. Her facial features may be a tad subtle, but they were undeniably pretty. It was like a refreshing, down-to-earth face. I wouldn’t be that surprised if she would bring forth the long-awaited Ukrainian breakthrough in this pageant, though I would wonder on whose expense amongst the Europeans would she garner that slot. VENEZUELA – Jessica Barboza. From her Sambil pictures I sensed that she would be someone to reckon with, and despite the objection of some pundits, I firmly believed she delivered on the expectations in spades. She physically resembled Miss World 2002 finalist and Miss International 2003 winner Goizeder Azua, and despite the lack of an Osmel Souza training background, she managed to be as polished as we expected from representatives from her country. GROUP TWO The ladies in Group 2 featured among others one mocha-colored Cocoa Babe, a slew of Asian contenders including one prohibitive front-runner for the crown, a sleeper Mediterranean favorite, the entire Benelux contingent, a super-statuesque African, and two fierce lovelies from North America. The three ladies who arrived too late to make it to the November 4 Press Presentation (and National Costume Competition) likewise were placed in this group. So, let us examine them all, shall we? ARGENTINA – Gisela Menossi. She was a surprisingly stronger-than-expected contender from this country, as her modeling experience helped her make the right impression onstage, and she’s attractive and trim enough to deservingly keep up with the best. Still a far cry from Miss Earth-Fire 2001 Daniela Stucan eight years ago, though. BELGIUM – Isabel Van Hoof. Well, she’s attractive, though a bit raw. Considering she kept on sporting wardrobe with low necklines and no cleavage to show for it, I think I should award her the “Flapper Award” (this is like the opposite of the “BB Sweepstakes Award”). CANADA – Lateesha Ector. She’s the first dark-complexioned representative from her country to this pageant. In my opinion, she is arguably even better than Miss Earth 2007 Jessica Trisko, as she’s great looking, she’s buffed (she’s shortlisted in the Swimsuit Competition from her group, remember), she’s polished, and yes, she’s an excellent communicator. Efforts on her part to speak our native language even as there was nothing Filipino flowing in her veins would only help her earn extra brownie points. COSTA RICA – Malena Orozco. Besides being one of the late arrivals, one prominent feature about this attractive fair-complexioned lady was her statuesque 6’0” height. Too bad, she couldn’t seem to capitalize on her strengths to the max as she could have. ECUADOR – Diana Delgado. She was also another late arrival. She was an attractive dusky Latina who sported a red gown with a humongous train during the Group 2 Evening Gown Competition at Greenbelt 5 in Makati. But she does pale in comparison with the bevy of Latina stunners out there. ENGLAND – Kirsty Nichol. It was a good thing when she arrived that she grew out her bangs and combed it out, as she was more attractive than expected. Still, I found her other colleagues from the British Isles stronger in the face department. Anyway, let’s just hand it to her for being a worthwhile contender. GHANA – Mariam Abdul Rauf. Her figure was not as trim and toned as the majority of the contenders out there, though maybe we should attribute it to African tastes that we may not readily appreciate. Still, she’s attractive and worthwhile. INDIA – Shriya Kishore. As long as she’s allowed to strut onstage, she would exude a charismatically glamorous presence. Of course she also has the superb communication skills we expect from representatives of her country, and her figure was trim enough to keep up with the best of them. I did find her very attractive, but admittedly there were prettier faces out there—Miss Pakistan was prettier. She is still on track of making the final cut but with the quality of this year’s batch, nothing is for certain though we do need to salute her for being a top-notch contender. ITALY – Luna Isabella Voce. She may not be as slickly polished as other ladies, and her evening gown catwalk was just a tad too simple amidst the luminous standouts out there, but she turned out on the road to becoming one of the possible usurpers to Sandra Seifert’s assumed path to victory. She has a passing resemblance to the official Miss Universe 2002 from Panama, Justine Pasek, crossed with movie star Eva Mendes, and her communication skills were way stronger than most representatives sent by her country to this pageant—and she was savvy enough to convey relevant points in her speeches, as she referred to the calamities of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng (internationally known as Ketsana and Parma respectively) in her environmental messages. An Italian breakthrough seems to be almost assured this time. KENYA – Catherine Muturi. What I remembered most about her was her white costume with feathered headdress as it was memorably un-Kenyan-looking and more Native American—in fact I thought it resembled a Walmart/Target/K-Mart version of Cher’s famous “Half-Breed” costume. She was an attractive contender, but I don’t really foresee her making serious inroads into the finals. KOREA – Yeju Park. I’ve seen prettier Korean contestants, but she possessed several standout edges that she would probably end up being more successful than those Korean beauty queens who were renowned for simply being pretty. First, of course, was her chic bob. Then, there was her savvy and sophisticated catwalk style, and the willingness to be daring unlike your typical conservative Korean girl—just as exhibited in the Evening Gown Competition finals. Finally, she was also a stronger communicator with a stronger command of English than your typical Korean contestant. LEBANON – Nicole Lichaa Khoury. Let’s just diplomatically say she made me flashback to five years ago, of a girl representing a country that won a special award this year and had fielded much improved and way more successful delegates since then. Her best strategy was clearly to simply enjoy her stay to the fullest. LUXEMBOURG – Theodora Banica. At first glance her pale features in contrast to her dark tresses were viewed as a jarring combination by several pageant fans and pundits. But she turned out to actually be more attractive than expected, though not in serious contention for the finals. MALAYSIA – Madeline Nandu. She was definitely the strongest representative ever fielded by this country to this pageant, as she has a nice pretty face, a trim figure, a polished stage presence, and strong communication skills. She was worthily shortlisted into the Swimsuit Competition finals in her group. I have a feeling that she would need to battle out a Top 18 slot with Mz. India and Korea, and it would not be totally surprising if she ended up edging them out. NETHERLANDS – Sabrina Anijs. During her speeches during the Press Presentation and National Costume Competition, she expressed passion for the cause as her speeches were like urgent calls to take action. Her exotic Dutch/Asian features were likewise very striking, she possessed a lovely trim figure that she showcased with aplomb in her risqué national costume, and she had solid stage skills. It’s not surprising if she would end up bringing forth a long-awaited Dutch breakthrough, but then again, she has so many other Europeans to contend with. NEW ZEALAND – Catherine Irving. She’s simply too plain and raw to be in serious contention for the finals. We have seen much better contenders fielded by this country before. PANAMA – Geraldine Higuera. I found her features a tad too angular and exotic, though I do need to give her credit for having a trim figure, polished presence, and solid stage chops—she was grandiosely impressive in her Incan beaded costume during the National Costume Competition. PHILIPPINES – Sandra Inez Seifert. Ever since the back-to-back Venezuelan victory at Miss Universe this year, pageant pundits have been buzzing there might be a similar scenario at this year’s pageant, with Karla Henry crowning her own countrywoman as her successor. But unlike the polarizing-to-negative reaction several pundits had towards Stefania Fernandez, they would actually welcome this lady’s victory. She did deliver the goods, and was competing at an expectedly stratified level; so far her performances would indicate that the forecast would be fulfilled, as she ended winning two very important looks-oriented special awards, Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown. Then, the hubbub over the release of unflattering photos of the crucial pre-judging round (where all delegates were mandated to appear sans makeup) made me recall Stefania’s recent visit to Indonesia, where there was a similar flap about one of her appearances sans makeup (she belatedly taped a video addressing that issue recently). And of course, this year’s pageant would be held in an island resort in Boracay, like the way Miss Universe held it this year at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. Now, I personally wouldn’t mind that scenario, but I have a hunch that victory would not be that assured. I would probably guarantee that Sandra would be assured of an element—it’s just a matter of which one. But to win it all? There were so many awesome ones out there who could conceivably pull off an upset. And there were precedents that just simply because one currently had the edge over the rest, that she could win it all. I could recall 2006 when it was perceived (including myself) that Marianne Puglia got what it took to win it all and make it back-to-back for Venezuela—she ended up as Miss Earth-Fire, instead. Then, a year later, her countrywoman, Silvana Santaella won both the swimsuit and evening gown special awards, but she was Miss Earth-Water, not the overall winner. In other words, it is indeed very conceivable Sandra would deservingly win it all, but prospects of that scenario are not as certain as perceived. One final note about the sans-makeup hoopla: remember that she was also subjected to the same process during the local search for Miss Philippines-Earth, and of course she ended up winning it all (and there were some lovely exotic lookers in her batch). So I wouldn’t think the prejudging panel would dock her significant points (if any) for her sans-makeup appearance. RUSSIA – Ksenia Podsevatkina. This third latecomer exuded an Eastern European supermodel vibe, like Melania Knauss before she met the Donald and became the 3rd Mrs. Trump. I’m not certain if the prejudging panel would appreciate such features, though her making the final cut is indeed a conceivable possibility. SERBIA – Dijana Milojkovic. She was a solid and polished contender but I found her facial features a tad too angular for my tastes—but then again, typical Slavs (including Serbs) shared such features. Would’ve probably made more serious inroads in a less competitive batch. SLOVAK REPUBLIC – Lea Sindlerova. Facewise, she was among the prettiest, and I originally believed she could conceivably join her Czech colleague into the finals. But then I examined her figure a little more closely and her stage presentations, and I thought her belly was a tad too concave for comfort, though she remained on the trim side (unlike, say, this year’s Miss Lebanon). Still, I should give her credit for being among the stronger Slovaks fielded in this pageant. SOUTH SUDAN – Mary Aheu Deng Kudum. Of course what everyone noticed about her was her height of 6’5”. Pre-arrival photos made her seem that she resembled supermodel Iman, though it turned out she didn’t really possess that supermodel’s bearing and sophistication. Still, she’s the second strongest African in this year’s batch, so if they decided to implement a continental representation for this year’s Top 18, she could conceivably take the 2nd African slot. SWEDEN – Giulia Simone Olsson. Some fans might appreciate her unvarnished girl-next-door features, but to my eyes, she was simply plain and unpolished and definitely not in serious contention for the finals. TURKEY – Gözde Zay. She did have a slender frame of a supermodel, and she was well known for her bangs, but she unfortunately was guilty of being unable to capitalize on her strengths to best effect. For instance, during the Group 2 Evening Gown competition, she sported a simple peach gown that was impeccably designed—unfortunately she walked like an anorexic hunchback in it, and hence could not make any kind of great impression. TURKS & CAICOS – Alison Capron. Let me repeat my sentiments from my Cocoa Babes and Crème Confetions article: this lady was simply the best representative from this country since Miss Universe 1987 semifinalist, Carmelita Ariza. She is a complete package of beauty, brains, and gab. She may not have the sleek wardrobe of her rivals, but she knew how to make the most of what she had. U S A – Amy Diaz. She is arguably the best representative from this country since Miss Earth 2005 finalist (and eventual legendary Survivor contestant) Amanda Kimmel. And Amy has some crucial edges over Amanda, like polished communication skills and competitive drive. She was such a stratified complete package that my Miss Venezuela-loving friend made a bold prediction—he actually foresaw her winning Miss Earth in lieu of Sandra. He had made several pronouncements that actually came true. Do we have another possible usurper in our midst? I’m inclined to agree with him on this one WALES – Dominique Dyer. Well, she’s a pretty and a worthwhile contestant with an inconsistent sparkle that I don’t really foresee her landing in the finals. GROUP 3 Attention was relatively muted towards the Group 3 delegates, but there were some key standouts that could make serious inroads into the finals. They were also notable for having the best camaraderie and joie de vivre among the contestants. BRAZIL – Larissa Ramos. Pre-arrival photos were less than impressive and she looked too raw and exotic for comfort. But once she was on our shores, she looked more like a sensual Latina beauty queen, and her features made me recall Miss Universe 2003 Top 10 semifinalist Gislaine Ferreira, with the sex appeal amped up to 11. It’s not surprising how she was shortlisted for both swimsuit and evening gown, as she has the body of sin that could not be resisted for the former, and the polished stage chops to pull off a classily sensual effect for the latter. I foresee her going all the way to the Top 8. CHINESE TAIPEI – Chen Yi-Wen. Normally if you have China and its so-called “renegade province” compete side by side in a beauty pageant, the prettier and more polished contender would typically come from the mainland. Not this time. This lady not only is prettier than her mainland counterpart, but is also a sleeker package. Her costume was an impressive marvel—and it was actually an aboriginal dress, not an elaborate Chinese dress, though it looked like the latter at first glance. EL SALVADOR – Mayra Aldana. Normally we expect representatives from this country to occupy the cellar, with perhaps a few rare occasions when they fielded standout gems. This lady may not be as pretty as, say, the last Salvadoran semifinalist to this pageant (Irma Dimas back in 2005), but she is a high caliber competitor and she is undeniably attractive. FRANCE – Magalie Thierry. During the early stages of the pageant, I barely noticed her looks as I admittedly was more fixated on Miss Latvia and Magalie’s pre-arrival photos were not that impressive. But I started noticing that she had serious stage chops during the National Costume Competition—even though she employed the Riyo Mori Flash and Taliana Twirl during that event. Then, photos of the swimsuit competition finals revealed that she actually has an incredibly buffed figure that I scratched my head why I failed to notice it when I viewed the Press Presentation video, and she was exuding mega-prettiness in her latter-day photos. Miss Latvia was turning out to no longer be the blonde-most-likely and the mantle was passed on to this lady. If she makes the cut, I foresee her passing the swimsuit round with flying colors, and then if she wears that white poufy monstrosity that I saw at Casino Filipino during the evening gown round, that would be as far as she would go—no stage or catwalk skill could redeem that dress if you ask me. She would actually have a better chance wearing her national costume for the evening gown round, as it could easily pass for a competition gown—and I wouldn’t mind seeing her do the Riyo Mori Flash and Taliana Twirl or two again. GREECE – Triantafyllia Sarantinou. She has a pretty face, though we’ve seen several prettier faces out there. Her figure was a bit of a disadvantage as it was a tad too voluptuous—only Miss Paraguay could get away with that. GUAM – Maria Luisa Santos. This part-Filipina lady is a balanced package of great looks, trim figure, strong communication skills, and polished stage presence. She had the derring-do to sport one of the skimpiest costumes during the National Costume Competition. She’s the best fielded by the continent of Oceania this year, so she might earn a slot on the grounds of regional representation but she does deserve to belong in the group based on merit. GUATEMALA – Hamy Tejada. Based on pre-arrival photos, I was expecting a heavily made-up pageant patty, but she fortunately tamed down her looks here. She is competing at a high level, though of course there are simply too many formidable stunners out there. HONDURAS – Alejandra Mendoza. She was reportedly part-Filipina, though I thought she could be confused for someone Chinese. There is some support for her, though I’m not totally into her looks. KOSOVO – Elza Marku. During the Press Presentation, she had a memorable moment as she tripped and the microphone fell down. She was a solid contender, and her resemblance to Miss Universe 2009 2nd runner-up Gona Dragusha could actually work in her favor. In Casino Filipino during the Evening Gown Competition finals, her hair was styled in an simple updo like Gona’s, though her gown as a bit more provocative than what Audrey Hepburn would typically wear, as the sides exposed significant amount of flesh. MACAU – Jia Pei. See: CHINA. Ditto MALTA – Alison Gallea Valletta. An interesting note: her surname is the same as the name of her country’s capital. She is a surprisingly polished competitor and more attractive than your usual Maltese delegate. Every time this country fielded an above-average competitor is reason for celebration, like maybe the way one would react with a strong delegate from, say, El Salvador or Turks & Caicos. MEXICO – Natalia Quiñonez. She has an attractive jet black Latina look, but I was not on her bandwagon the way several Filipino fans were—as early as the National Costume Competition there were Filipino fans screaming her country’s name when she appeared. I found her rather overrated, and I felt her figure was the least buffed among those shortlisted in the Swimsuit Competition, and she shouldn’t have changed gowns during the Evening Gown Competition finals. But, I have to concede that she was able to pass serious muster when photos of her sans makeup during the pre-judging round were circulated—she does look good without cosmetics. Maybe on those grounds she would be granted a slot in the Top 18, but I don’t foresee her going beyond that. NEPAL – Richa Thapa Magar. Here was another polished contender from an unheralded nation in the pageant field. Have to give her tribute for her creditable performance. NIGERIA – Modesta Alozie. Her facial features were an acquired taste, but she knew how to project her best whenever she appeared. If two slots were allocated for Africans, she might actually end up edging out the rather raw Miss South Sudan for that second slot. NORTHERN IRELAND – Kayleigh O’Reilly. If there would be a slot for a lass from the British Isles to make the cut, this lady is the one who would most likely be granted that slot. She was the best looking and the most polished amongst the lasses from the UK. PARAGUAY – Gabriela Rejala. She wasn’t as lean and trim as she was at Miss World last year and in her sexy pre-arrival swimsuit photo. But she still possessed one of the most beautiful faces in this year’s batch, and she was shortlisted in both swimsuit and evening gown. I don’t know if she’s making a bit of a statement competing in this state, but there is a likelihood that if the prejudging panel selected her into the Top 18, it would be a major statement stating that you do not need to be size 2 or below to shine in a pageant, that there would be room for ladies of her size. There were at least three ladies from her continent that seemed to have the inside track into the finals, though—would there still be room for this still-gorgeous lady? PERU – Leticia Rivera. Photos actually made her appear really gorgeous, but in person she was still attractive, but not in the stratified level of her South American colleagues from Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Venezuela. PUERTO RICO – Dignelis Jimenez. Why does the North American/Caribbean contingent have to be this cutthroat this year? We know the U S A has the inside track into the finals, along with Mexico and Cuba, and fighting for a few more slots would be the extremely polished Canada, then the Cocoa Babes (amongst them, it might be Miss Turks & Caicos who would most likely go all the way). To this lady’s credit, she may appear like an overly polished Stepford Wife / plastic Barbie, but there was clearly a warm-blooded, breathing, sympathetic human being underneath. I feared that even if she had the merits to be worthy of belonging in the Top 18, she would most likely miss the cut, just like what happened six years ago at the Miss International Pageant (when she was still a brunette). SAMOA – Varuna Curry. Well, to her credit, she seemed to be the trimmest of the Samoans ever to compete in this pageant. SCOTLAND – Sarah Finlay. She’s a pretty lass, she’s well-spoken, and she’s lean and trim. Like her colleagues in the Crème Anglaise contingent, her disadvantage was her inconsistent sparkle. SINGAPORE – Valerie Lim. She’s more attractive than your typical Singaporean delegate to this pageant, but she would be facing an uphill battle considering the presence of Mz. India, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand battling for maybe only three slots into the Top 18. SLOVENIA – Maja Jamnik. She’s turned out to be a more than worthwhile contender, but well, in this year’s batch it would not be enough to make serious inroads into the finals. SWITZERLAND – Graziela Rogers. Stephanie Gossweiler and Nasanin Nuri made the Top 8, and this lady seemed to have the qualities to join her two predecessors and finish in the same way, as she had more than a passing resemblance to the latter. She already achieved buzz as she was shortlisted in swimsuit and won the Miss Congeniality award. But this year was a cutthroat year that there would be no guarantee that she would make the final cut. But then again, I had been wrong about her two predecessors, that I placed them on my bubbling under list. I wouldn’t mind if I would be wrong again this time. TAHITI – Niuriki Teremate. She is a great looking delegate, though I felt her figure was a tad less toned than most. Still, in my reckoning if a second slot was open for Oceania in the Top 18, she’ll most likely be the one to occupy it (the first slot would belong to Miss Guam, of course). TANZANIA – Evelyne Almasi. The African contingent this year was not as sensational as it was in the past two years. But this lady was poised to become the African most likely to make the final cut—not only because she already won the National Costume Competition, but because she was the most attractive and trimmest amongst her colleagues. Still, I would actually personally prefer that her slot be occupied by a Cocoa Babe instead. THAILAND – Rujinan Phanseetum. She has been highly favored to probably usurp the crown from Sandra Seifert, but though her lovely very Asian features, her trim figure, and her strong catwalk skills would still allow her to remain on track of landing in the Top 8, I didn’t think she was as formidable as previously thought, and besides the flouncy catwalk she displayed during the Evening Gown Competition finals, she was relatively low-key. Well, maybe she might be reserving her energies to when it counts—the finals in Boracay. I won’t be counting her out yet. CONCLUSION: Now that Group 3 is accounted for, let me trot out my personal leaderboard again: TOP CONTENDERS: PHILIPPINES, SPAIN, THAILAND, VENEZUELA POSSIBLE USURPERS: ITALY, U S A LIKELIEST: BRAZIL, CANADA, COLOMBIA, CUBA, CZECH REPUBLIC, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, FRANCE, GEORGIA, GUAM, HUNGARY, INDIA, ITALY, JAMAICA, KOREA, LATVIA, MALAYSIA, MARTINIQUE, MEXICO, NETHERLANDS, PARAGUAY, POLAND, PUERTO RICO, RUSSIA, SOUTH SUDAN, SWITZERLAND, TANZANIA, TURKS & CAICOS, UKRAINE EXCELLENT: BAHAMAS, GUATEMALA, KOSOVO, MALTA, NIGERIA, NORTHERN IRELAND, PAKISTAN, PERU, SCOTLAND, SERBIA, SLOVAK REPUBLIC, TAHITI, WALES INTELLIGENCE FACTOR: INDONESIA VERY STRONG: ARGENTINA, CHINESE TAIPEI, COSTA RICA, ECUADOR, EL SALVADOR, GABON, GUADELOUPE, HONDURAS, JAPAN, KENYA, NEPAL, PANAMA, SINGAPORE, SLOVENIA STRONG: ALBANIA, AUSTRALIA, DENMARK, ENGLAND, GHANA, GREECE, ISRAEL, SOUTH AFRICA, TONGA VERY GOOD: BELGIUM, HONG KONG, LUXEMBOURG, NEW ZEALAND, SAMOA, SWEDEN, TURKEY GOOD: CHINA, MACAU FAIR: LEBANON “FEARFUL” FORECAST: TOP 8: BRAZIL, CUBA, ITALY, PHILIPPINES, SPAIN, THAILAND, U S A, VENEZUELA TOP 12: COLOMBIA, CZECH REPUBLIC, FRANCE, TURKS & CAICOS TOP 18: CANADA, GUAM, KOREA, MEXICO, POLAND, TANZANIA BUBBLING UNDER: BAHAMAS, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, GEORGIA, GUATEMALA, HUNGARY, INDIA, INDONESIA, JAMAICA, KOSOVO, LATVIA, MALAYSIA, MALTA, MARTINIQUE, NETHERLANDS, NIGERIA, NORTHERN IRELAND, PAKISTAN, PARAGUAY, PERU, PUERTO RICO, RUSSIA, SCOTLAND, SERBIA, SLOVAK REPUBLIC, SOUTH SUDAN, SWITZERLAND, TAHITI, UKRAINE, WALES I’m extremely optimistic that this year’s Miss Earth would finally select a babelicious combo along with a winner whose looks or attractiveness would never be questioned. Date Posted: Sat, Nov 21 2009, 11:35:05 Saturday, 11.21.2009 Miss Earth 2009 Group 3 Delegates Review The Group 3 delegates get the least publicity in terms of their activities because these activities are held mostly out of town. This group is also the closest among the three groups; they treat each other like sisters. Three from this group received the major awards: Best in National Costume for Miss Tanzania, Miss Friendship for Miss Switzerland and Miss Talent for Miss Tahiti. Could this group also bring a number of semifinalists come finals night? Let’s see how this group fared in this competition. STRONG SISTERHOOD PREVAILS IN GROUP 3! BRAZIL, Larissa Ramos – Larissa is one of the tallest delegates in the competition. Her inclusion in the TOP 15 final swimsuit and evening gown competition already assures her a TOP 18 spot. Could she bring Brazil’s second Miss Earth crown? Maybe yes or maybe not. She faces a stiff competition with the other stronger favorites like Misses Cuba, Spain, Poland, Venezuela and the Philippines. Larissa will be lucky to make it to the TOP 4 and bring a second crown for Brazil. CHINESE-TAIPEI, Chen Yi-Wen – Chen is the shortest among the Chinese delegates. I was impressed with her National Costume performance last Nov. 4 at the Amazing Philippines Theater. She has one of the best national costumes in this competition, but she was beaten by her group mate Miss Tanzania Evelyne Almasi. Chen will be more than happy to see a lot of her group mates make it to the TOP 18. EL SALVADOR, Mayra Aldana – Mayra is another Latina who will be outshone by the stronger Latina delegates. She just doesn't capture much attention from the press. FRANCE, Magalie Thierry – Magalie has the best body in this competition and she is also one of the most beautiful blondes. Her inclusion to the TOP 15 final swimsuit competition can secure her a TOP 18 spot. The only problem with Magalie is her catwalk skills; she looks awkward walking on stage and she should keep her hair straight as she looks more beautiful with straight hair. She could sneak into the TOP 12 if she plays her cards very well during the TOP 18 swimsuit competition. GREECE, Triantafyllia Sarantinou – Triantafyllia pales in comparison with last year’s representative from Greece, Ria Antoniou. It was shocking that Ria did not even make the semifinals; she and Adriana Reveron were the most beautiful delegates last year. Triantafyllia is an exemption as she is eclipsed by her stronger European counterparts. GUAM, Maria Luisa Santos – Malu, as she is called by her family and friends, is of Filipino descent. She was one of the Top 15 finalists in the evening gown competition which was held last Nov. 16. Malu is a sure shoo-in for the TOP 18 and could make her way to the TOP 12 if luck is on her side. GUATEMALA, Hamy Tejada – Another delegate with a big bosom. During the preliminary swimsuit competition with her group at the Lakeshore in Pampanga, the straight male audience kept shouting that she was sexy because of her well-endowed chest. Hamy will not enter the semifinals as she is not the best from South America; she is outshone by her Latina compatriots like Venezuela, Cuba and Puerto Rico. HONDURAS, Alejandra Mendoza – Another Alejandra from South America and has a Filipino roots, but this time she is outshone by her namesakes from Colombia and Spain. Although, her best weapon is her fluency in English and environmental advocacy. If she's lucky, she can cruise her way to TOP 18. KOSOVO, Elza Marku – Elza is one of the best reps that Kosovo has sent to this pageant. She just lags behind her European counterparts like Spain, Poland and Czech Republic. One thing she has in common with Marigona Dragusha (Miss Universe 2009, 2nd runner-up) is that they sport the same Audrey Hepburn hairstyle during the final evening gown competition. But Elza is no Marigona Dragusha when it comes to performance in both swimsuit and final evening competition. MACAU, Jia Pei – Jia Pei is one of the four Chinese delegates in this competition. If I had to chose among the four Chinese who could possibly make it to the TOP 18, it would not be Jia Pei but Hong Kong’s Wang Shan Shan. MALTA, Alison Gallea Valletta – Representing Malta in this pageant is already an achievement for Alison. She will bring with her long lasting friendships and memorable experiences when she gets back to Malta. MEXICO, Natalia Quiñonez – Natalia may not be the best this year from Mexico after her predecessor Abbygail Elizalde’s Top 4 finish last year. She delivered as expected during the Top 15 final swimsuit and evening gown competition. The highest placement Natalia could get is a TOP 12 and the lowest will be a TOP 18 spot. NEPAL, Richa Thapa Magar – Richa is one of the shortest delegates in this competition. Unfortunately, she is not the best that Nepal has sent to this pageant. NIGERIA, Modesta Alozie – Modesta is not one of the best black delegates from Africa. She is outshone by Tanzania’s Evelyne Almasi and South Sudan’s Aheu Deng Kudum. I am sure she will be cheering for them to make the cut. NORTHERN IRELAND, Kayleigh O'Reilly - Kayleigh is one of the four UK beauties, along with Miss England’s Kirsty Nichol, who will have a chance to make TOP 18 if they play their cards well especially in the pre-judging interview where they have an advantage over the other European stunners. PARAGUAY, Gabriela Rejala – Gabriela’s experience in Miss World pageant last year in South Africa will give her an advantage in this competition. Having made it to the TOP 15 finalists in both swimsuit and evening gown competition will make her a shoo-in for the TOP 18 semifinalists. But she will not advance further to the next round considering that there are others who are better than her in terms of catwalk skills and stage projection. PERU, Leticia Rivera – Leticia is one of the tallest delegates from South America but her height alone is not enough to secure her a TOP 18 spot as she will face stiff competition from Latina compatriots like Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia. PUERTO RICO – Dignelis Jimenez – Dignelis is a lawyer and this will be her advantage among the other delegates. She also has a good body and catwalk skills which could earn her a TOP 18 spot. Her experience at Miss International in 2003 and Miss Tourism World in 2004 where she ended up 2nd runner-up will also help her land in the semifinals. SAMOA, Varuna Curry – Varuna will just be another delegate who is happy to be representing her country, Samoa. SCOTLAND, Sarah Finlay – Sarah is one of the four UK beauties in this competition. Her small face with a beautiful smile has captivated the public during their mall tours at the Robinsons Mall. However, she was not as strong as Misses England or Northern Ireland in terms of performance during their final swimsuit competition. SINGAPORE, Valerie Lim – Valerie may not be the best from Singapore but she is doing something that her countrymen could be proud of. She’s the most bubbly among the delegates in this group and she is always fun to be around. Her reports on everyday activities in her blog is a testament that all the girls in her group are enjoying each other’s company and looking after each other. SLOVENIA, Maja Jamnik – Maja is another blonde from Europe who faces stiff competition from stronger European beauties like Misses Spain, Poland and Czech Republic. SWITZERLAND, Graziella Rogers – Graziella received the Miss Friendship award because she is obviously the friendliest and the most approachable girl in the pageant. But being the friendliest is not her only forte; she also was selected as one of the Top 15 finalists for the swimsuit competition proving that she can also hold on her own among the best in her group. The highest placement Graziella could get is a Top 18 semifinalist spot. TAHITI, Niuriki Teremate – Neu as she is called by her family and friends is not the best that Tahiti has sent to this pageant. Her only consolation is when she won the Miss Talent award last Nov. 17th the Central Philippines University in Iloilo province. Her body is not toned and she looked awkward when she walked during their preliminary and final swimsuit competition. TANZANIA, Evelyne Almasi – Evelyne got the first of the major awards when she won the Best in National Costume last Nov. 4 at the Amazing Philippines Theater. She is deserving of this award as it really reflects the Earth in her costume. Although she is not at par with Tanzania’s representative last year who almost won the Miss Earth 2008 title, Miriam Odemba, Evelyne could sneak her way to the Top 18 semifinals. THAILAND, Rujinan Phanseethum – Rujinan is another beautiful delegate that Thailand has sent to this pageant. Her endearing personality and sweet smile makes her a favorite of the public. Among the Asian delegates, she and Miss Philippines’ Sandra Seifert are the best and they could easily make it to the Top 4. But with the tough competition from the Latinas like Venezuela and Cuba and from Europe with Spain, she will have to work harder to reach the Final Four. My summary of this group’s placements come finals night: Possible Miss Earth winner – None Possible Top 8 Placement – Brazil Possible Top 12 Placement – France, Thailand Possible Top 18 Semifinalists – Guam, Honduras, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and Tanzania Critical Beauty’s Top 18 with ranking: 1. Miss Earth 2009 – Cuba, Jamillette Gaxiola 2. Miss Air 2009 – Venezuela, Jessica Barboza 3. Miss Water 2009 – Spain, Alejandra Echevarria 4. Miss Fire 2009 – Philippines, Sandra Seifert Top 8 Finalists 5. USA, Amy Diaz 6. Poland, Izabela Wilczek 7. Brazil, Larissa Ramos 8. Thailand, Rujinan Phanseethum Top 12 9. Colombia, Alejandra Castillo Munera 10. Czech Republic, Tereza Budkova (photo) 11. France, Magalie Thierry 12. Switzerland, Graziella Rogers Top 18 Semifinalists 13. Russia, Ksenia Podsevatkina 14. Puerto Rico, Dignelis Jimenez 15. Italy, Luna Isabella Voce 16. Jamaica, Jenaae Jackson 17. Turks & Caicos, Alison Capron 18. South Sudan, Aheu Deng Kudum If we have to choose the best three delegates from each continent, the list could look like this: ASIA – Philippines, Thailand and Korea AFRICA – South Sudan, Tanzania and South Africa EUROPE – Spain, Poland, Czech Republic and France OCEANIA – Guam and Australia (I choose only two as they are the only ones who are deserving of a semifinal spot) NORTH AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN – Cuba, USA and Jamaica SOUTH AMERICA – Venezuela, Brazil and Colombia This completes my review of all the delegates for Miss Earth 2009. May the best girl win this Sunday night! PHOTO CREDITS: Critical Beauty, Miss Earth TV Friday, 11.20.2009 Miss Earth 2009 Group 2 Delegates Review The group 2 delegates probably has also some of the strongest shoo-ins for a TOP 18 spot. This group includes Miss Philippines, Sandra Seifert, and the tallest beauty queen in the history of all international pageants, Miss South Sudan, Aheu Deng Kudum belong. Group 2 has gained more publicity than Group 3 because the former had their activities done mostly in a mini-fashion show at Robinsons Mall. This is where I could truly evaluate them in terms of catwalk and projection. Let’s begin my review of this group. ARGENTINA, Gisela Menossi – Gisela is one of the tallest delegates in this competition. A fashion model in her country, Gisela just pales in comparison to stronger Latina compatriots like Venezuela, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Though her catwalk skills is an advantage, it's not enough to advance her to the semifinals. BELGIUM, Isabel Van Hoof – Isabel comes off as a sweet-looking delegate, but she is sometimes a bit shy as evidenced by her not mingling much with the public during their mall show activities. With a lot of European stunners in this competition, Isabel will just fade away in the limelight as she is not good in terms of catwalk. Her personality is much too reserved to be considered for a TOP 18 spot. CANADA, Lateesha Ector – Lateesha is a multi-racial beauty who has a chance to enter the TOP 18. She was among the TOP 15 finalists in the swimsuit competition and her communication skills is also good as suggested by the interview I did with her. If Lateesha makes it to the semifinals, expect her to advance to the TOP 12 with her above-average swimsuit performance. COSTA RICA, Malena Orozco – Malena is the second tallest delegate in this competition after Miss South Sudan’s Aheu Deng Kudum. Same as with Miss Argentina, she will be eclipsed by her stronger Latina compatriots like Venezuela, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Malena has very strong facial features and she will just be another forgettable Latina clapping for her stronger Latina compatriots who will make the semifinals. ECUADOR, Diana Delgado – Diana is beautiful but short in height; she is overshadowed by her tall Latina compatriots if they stand side by side during photo shoots. ENGLAND, Kirsty Nichol – Kirsty is one of the four delegates from the United Kingdom. She and Miss Northern Ireland are the most beautiful of the UK batch. Kirsty is sweet and smiles all the time. She might just be lucky to make TOP 18. GHANA, Mariam Abdul Rauf - Mariam’s greatest disadvantage is her body; it is not toned and her hips are too wide and not proportionate to her upper body. INDIA, Shriya Kishore – Shriya’s initial photos that surfaced on the internet made her as one of the frontrunners for the Miss Earth title. But when she arrived here in Manila, seeing her in person was a bit disappointing. Shriya’s biggest advantage is her great catwalk skills and her articulateness about the environmental issues. Shriya could nail a semifinalist spot based on these two advantages but I fear that she may not advance further to the next round if she does not perform well in the swimsuit competition. ITALY, Luna Isabella Voce (photo) – I never thought that Luna could be so beautiful in person when I saw her in one of the mini-fashion shows at Robinsons Mall. Luna’s charming personality and her endearing smile makes her one of the favorites of the public. The only problem with Luna is her below-average catwalk skills as seen during the final evening gown competition. The highest that Luna could make is a TOP 18 spot. KENYA, Catherine Muturi – Catherine is not the best Kenyan delegate in this pageant mainly because she does not have a toned body. She looks heavy just like Ghana’s Mariam Abdul Rauf. KOREA, Yeju Park – Yeju may not be the best Korean delegate ever sent to this pageant but she delivered as expected mainly because the Filipinos are still embracing the Korean invasion here in the Philippines through their ‘telenovelas’. Yeju’s uniqueness is that she is the only short-haired delegate in this year’s pageant. She could possibly get a spot in the semifinals but she will not advance further to the next round. LEBANON, Nicole Lichaa Khoury – Nicole might not have the best body in this competition but she deserves praise her having enough guts (no pun intended!) to join this pageant. It is not easy for her to be in this competition considering that she knows she will not have any chance of placing. Her only consolation is to make new friends and fond memories. LUXEMBOURG, Theodora Banica – Theodora is one of the shortest delegates in this competition. Having represented Luxembourg in this pageant is already an achievement for her. MALAYSIA, Madeline Nandu – I was surprised that Madeline made the TOP 15 in the final swimsuit competition, but when I saw her swimsuit performance at the Fontana last Nov. 14th, I was convinced that she gave the best performance in this competition. This could be attributed to Madeline’s experience at the recent Miss Tourism Queen International pageant held in China. Madeline could nail a semifinalist spot as what she did at the MTQI pageant and if she continues a good job in the the swimsuit competition, she could be in the TOP 12. NETHERLANDS, Sabrina Anijs – Sabrina is of Indian descent who was born and raised in the Netherlands. Her advantage will be her knowledge about the environmental issues in our planet. Other than that, she’s weak in terms of catwalk skills and will be eclipsed by the other stronger European delegates. NEW ZEALAND, Catherine Irving – Catherine is also one of the shortest delegates in this competition. What I don’t like about Catherine is that sometimes she tries so hard to impress the public with her catwalk skills which appear too stiff. PANAMA, Geraldine Higuera – Geraldine is another Latina who is forgettable. She is also short and does not stand out in group photo shoots. PHILIPPINES, Sandra Inez Seifert – Sandra could be the best Philippine delegate to this pageant after Miss Earth 2008, Karla Henry. With her win of the two major awards - Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown - she definitely has a big chance of giving the Philippines a back to back victory. My only fear for Sandra is that Carousel might reverse the results if she tops the competition during the finals night. Considering that it is held in the Philippines - having another victory by the Philippines could have a negative impact on next year’s pageant if it is held here again. RUSSIA, Ksenia Podsevatkina – Ksenia is the last delegate to arrive here in Manila and she missed the Press Presentation event held last Nov. 4. This Russian lass may not be among the most beautiful European delegates. Her biggest advantage is her great catwalk skills and her 5’10” height. Ksenia’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot and she could advance to the TOP 12 if she gives a good swimsuit performance in the finals night. SERBIA, Dijana Milojkovic – Dijana's most prominent feature is her pouty lips which could be compared to Angelina Jolie's. She also has a sexy body and big bosom which makes her a favorite among the straight male admirers. Dijana’s disadvantage is that she is eclipsed by her stronger European counterparts like Misses Spain, Poland and Republic. She will miss the semifinals this time and will just end up as one of the thank you girls. SLOVAK REPUBLIC, Lea Sindlerova – Lea also has a beautiful face but she is outshined by the favorites from Europe like Misses Spain, Poland and Czech Republic. She will be more than happy to see these girls make it to the top during the finals. SOUTH SUDAN, Aheu Deng Kudum – Aheu, being the tallest delegate in the history of international pageantry, already made headlines in the pageant world with her height of almost 6 feet and 5 inches. She also comes from South Sudan which recently joined the international pageants considering that her country was involved in civil wars. Aheu is very passionate about her advocacy of caring for our Mother Earth which is evident in my email interview with her. Aheu’s highest placement could be a spot in the TOP 18 mainly due to her popularity among the Filipinos. SWEDEN, Giulia Simone Olsson – Giulia’s initial pictures on the Internet come off as beautiful but when I saw her personally during the press presentation, it was not what I expected of her. She looks weird in some of her photos and her catwalk skills is not that great. But Giulia is a very intelligent person which is evident in my email interview with her. TURKS & CAICOS, Alison Capron – Alison may be one of the best candidates that Turks & Caicos have sent in this pageant as she could give the other delegates a run for their money. I was surprised that Alison made it to the TOP 15 final swimsuit competition because there were other girls who were more deserving to be in the TOP 15. Alison’s catwalk skills surely need more improvement. I think she could make the TOP 18, considering that Turks & Caicos invited reigning Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry to crown their winner this year which happens to be Alison. USA, Amy Diaz – Amy is one of the best candidates that USA has sent to this pageant. She is just as competitive as Venezuela’s Jessica Barboza and the Philippines’ Sandra Seifert. Her only disadvantage is her short stature (she's barely 5'6"), Amy’s performance in the TOP 15 swimsuit and evening gown competition was impressive and it could help her secure a spot in TOP 8 in the finals. And if she played her card very well, she could find herself in TOP 4. WALES, Dominique Dyer – Dominique is one of the four UK beauties in this competition and she is also the shortest among the four. She pales in comparison to her two sisters from the UK, Misses England and Northern Ireland when it comes to beauty. Let’s summarize the Group 2 delegates with their possible placements come finals night. Possible Miss Earth winner – Philippines Possible Top 8 placement – USA Possible Top 12 placement – Canada, Russia Possible Top 18 semifinalists – England, India, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, South Sudan, Turks and Caicos Next on my review will be the Group 3 delegates. If Group 1 has four possible winners and Group 2 has 1 possible winner, will there be a possible winner also from Group 3? Let’s find out by tomorrow as I wrap up my review of all the delegates and my ranking of the delegates. We will also reveal our TOP 18 semifinalists, so come visit again soon! PHOTOS COURTESY of Miss Earth TV Thursday, 11.19.2009 Miss Earth 2009 Group 1 Delegates Review I will now give a review of each delegate of the Miss Earth 2009 pageant. My review is solely based on my observations as a correspondent for Critical Beauty, and my impressions on each delegate from the day they arrived up until the Final Evening Gown competition. I start with a review of the Group 1 delegates and read on how they fare in this competition and what I think they could reach this coming Finals Night on Nov. 22 at the Boracay Eco-Village Resort and Convention Center. ALBANIA, Suada Saliu – Suada’s first week here in Manila was a disappointment. I don’t like the way she looks with her messy hair. I have interviewed Suada through e-mail and she knows how to communicate in English, not that fluently but at least she can clearly convey her message about her environmental advocacy. Her height and experience as model in her country could bring her a spot in the TOP 18 semifinalists. But she is not the assertive enough and I have the impression that she's in the Philippines only for a vacation. AUSTRALIA, Melinda Heffernan – Melinda’s advantage is her good communication skills as she comes off as intelligent based on my e-mail interview with her. Her weakest point is her height which is not proportionate to her body and she is outshined by the favorites in her group. However, Melinda is doing something to be noticed by the press by posing a lot for the camera. She's a potential TOP 18 semifinalist. BAHAMAS, Krystal Brown – Krystal is one of the black delegates hailing from the Caribbean. She has charmed the Filipinos with her smile and sweet personality. Krystal is overshadowed by the other black delegates in this competition and she is more than happy to participate in this pageant that will bring her good memories and lasting friendships. CHINA, Yan Xu – Yan Xu is a model in her country. She is not among the most facially beautiful among the Asian girls, but she is definitely one of the tallest along with her "twin" sister, Miss Hong Kong’s Wang Shan Shan (I say twin sister because they almost look alike and they are inseparable in every activity they do. Yan Xu won the Miss Earth Fontana 2009 title mainly because Fontana is owned mostly by Chinese. Yan Xu will not enter the semifinals as she is overshadowed by stronger Asian delegates like Misses Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia. COLOMBIA, Alejandra Castillo Munera – Alejandra looks older for her age if she doesn't make herself up well. One example is during the tree-planting activities at the Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. She looked like she was the chaperone of the other Miss Earth delegates. Alejandra’s strongest point is her catwalk skills that earned her a spot in the TOP 15 finalists of the swimsuit and evening gown competition. Compared to other Latina beauties, her beauty is overshadowed by the better-looking delegates like Misses Venezuela and Cuba. The highest placement Alejandra could get is a TOP 18 semifinalist spot and she might surprise us all if she makes it to the TOP 18 and possibly to the TOP 12. CUBA, Jamillette Gaxiola (photo) – Jamillette is definitely the face of this year’s Miss Earth pageant. The hottest favorite to win the Miss Earth title and could make history as the first from Cuba. One good thing that you should know about Jamillette, even if she knows she’s the top favorite, is that she’s very humble, sweet and very approachable especially to those who want to have their pictures taken with her. She’s also the favorite of the staff from the largest TV network in the Philippines, ABS-CBN. That’s why she is almost in every ABS-CBN’s coverage, most notably in the tree- planting activities in Nuvali. Jamillette could definitely take it all come finals night, but I hope that she won’t suffer the same fate of those previous top favorites who did not make it to the TOP 4. CZECH REPUBLIC, Tereza Budkova – Tereza’s beautiful face and her warm smile earned her a soft spot among pageant experts and fans. Her most recent win as Miss Photogenic may have sealed her a spot in TOP 18, as most of the winners of this award become automatic sure shoo-ins for the semifinals. Tereza’s weakest point may be her communication skills; she’s not fluent in English, though she clearly knows how to convey her environmental advocacy message to the public. The highest placement Tereza could get is TOP 8 and the lowest is a TOP 18 spot. DENMARK, Patrica Tjornelund – Patrica is the first black delegate that Denmark has sent to this pageant. And would you believe when I asked her if she knew the first Miss Earth who came from her country, she replied she did not even know about it! It’s really unbelievable that they did not even research about the Miss Earth history. It should be part of their training if they have it in their country. Anyways, Patrica is short and she resembles Matet, a Filipina actress in the Philippines. Patrica will be one of those who have enjoyed their stay in the Philippines and will just watch at the sidelines during the finals. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Mariel Garcia – Mariel is among the tallest delegates in this year’s pageant. She knows how to strut her stuff just to be noticed by the press, but she can't hold a candle to the likes of Misses Jamaica and Martinique. She is always in the company of her fellow Latina delegates like Cuba, Colombia and Spain. Mariel’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot but I doubt if she can advance further. GABON, Marlyne Lea Ayenne – Marlyne is her country's first ever representative to this pageant. She is always seen in the company of another black delegate, Miss Guadeloupe. Marlyne does not attract much press attention compared to her fellow African delegates Misses South Africa and Tanzania. I don't think she'll place at all. GEORGIA, Nona Diakonidze – Nona has a beautiful face matched with her luscious lips. She is one of those delegates who are always on the go during their activities like in their Nestle Wellness badminton activity at the Yonex Center in Mandaluyong City. She was selected as one of the TOP 5 Nestle Wellness Beauties, and if Miss Earth had a fast track for the Sports event, Nona could definitely win it. Her catwalk skills is above average and she could give the top favorites a good fight in this department. Nona’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot. GUADELOUPE, Marie-Ange Seymour – Marie-Ange could have the same fate as Miss Gabon’s Marlyne Lea Ayenne; they are not among the best black delegates in this competition. But you see can that they are enjoying their stay here in the Philippines and Marie-Ange definitely would have a lot of stories and experiences to tell to her family and friends when she returns to Guadeloupe. HONG KONG, Wang Shan Shan – Wang Shan Shan is the most beautiful among the Chinese delegates which include China, Chinese-Taipei and Macau. I was disappointed that the Miss Earth Fontana 2009 title was not given to this delegate as she deserved it more than Miss China. She was always seen together with Miss China’s Yan Xu and they are almost inseparable. Wang Shan Shan’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot as she also has good catwalk skills which was evident during the swimsuit and evening gown competition. HUNGARY, Korinna Kocsis – Korrina’s advantage is her beautiful face even without make-up. Although I questioned her placement as one of the TOP 15 finalists in the swimsuit competition. Her body and catwalk skills are average, and there are others who are more deserving than her to make the 15 finalists of the swimsuit competition. Korrina could definitely make the TOP 18 semifinals with her beautiful face, but I don't think she'll advance to the next round. INDONESIA, Nadine Zamira Syarief – Nadine is the best Indonesian delegate so far that has been sent to this pageant. Some Filipino pageant experts and fans compared her to former Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2007, Anna Theresa Licaros in terms of beauty. Nadine’s biggest advantage is her English communication skills - considered a rarity among Indonesian representatives in international pageants. Nadine is really passionate about her environmental advocacy in Indonesia. Nadine could make the TOP 18 with her charming personality, good communication skills and her passion for caring for Mother Earth. ISRAEL, Noy Michaelov – Noy is a model in her country; she is good in catwalk and has also good English communication skills. She is always seen in the company of Miss Indonesia during their activities here in Manila and out of town. Noy was truly beautiful when she wore her hair in a bun and in yellow gown during the Evening Gown competition. Noy could make the semifinals if she plays her cards very well during the pre-judging selection process. JAMAICA, Jenaae Jackson – Jenaae is one of the most beautiful black delegates together with Miss Martinique. But I was disappointed from what I’ve seen in pictures on the Internet - it’s not the same Jenaae you see in person. Maybe I was expecting more of Jenaae in terms of fierceness in her looks and poses in front of the cameras; what I see is a sweet- looking Jenaae who is reserved and a bit shy. If I had to choose a black delegate to be included in the semifinals, I would chose either Miss Jamaica or Miss Martinique based on their their looks alone. JAPAN, Takada Tomomi – Takada’s advantage is her catwalk skills and her charming personality. She is somewhat a cross-over between Riyo Mori and Kurara Chibana in terms of looks and fierceness. When she introduced herself in the Filipino language, the crowd gave her an applause - which automatically makes her as one of the favorites among the Filipino public. She wouldn't have any problem entering the TOP 18. LATVIA, Diana Kubasova – Diana has one of the most beautiful faces from Europe. She looks like a doll when she stands in a bevy of European beauties. Diana’s downfall might be her body and not so good catwalk skills. She could penetrate the TOP 18 with her beauty alone but she could be outranked by other European beauties like Misses Spain, Czech Republic and Poland. MARTINIQUE, Pascale Nelide – Pascale together with Jenaae are among the best black delegates in this competition. Pascale’s curly locks are beautiful, she is always warm with anyone who asks to have their photo taken with her. Pascale's disadvantage is that she can’t communicate in English - which may ruin her chances in entering the semis. If Pascale dazzles the judges during the pre-judging selection process, she just might make it. PAKISTAN, Ayesha Gilani – Ash - as she is called by her family and friends - is the best delegate Pakistan has ever sent to this pageant. Ash’s only disadvantage is her short stature and sometimes she looks older in some pictures. Ash is vary passionate about caring for Mother Earth as suggested by the e-mail interview with her. Her passion is her biggest advantage - and if she successfully demonstrates it during the pre-judging selection process, she could clinch a TOP 18 slot. POLAND, Izabela Wilczek – Izabela is one of the most beautiful faces in this competition even without make-up. Izabela has a big chance to be the next Miss Earth; her closest rival to the title would be Cuba’s Jamillette Gaxiola and Spain’s Alejandra Echevarria. She can speak good English and is a strong animal rights advocate. Izabela’s beauty and elegance cannot be ignored as she also has the best evening gown presentation last Nov. 16th at the PAGCOR Theatre in Paranaque City. Her highest placement could be a possible Miss Earth winner and the lowest could be a runner-up position. SOUTH AFRICA, Chanel Grantham – Chanel maybe not be the best candidate South Africa has sent to this pageant, but she delivers as expected in this competition. Her biggest advantage is her great personality coupled with her good English communication skills. Chanel was seen talking with the president of the Nuvali Company in one of their tree-planting activities in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Maybe she is interested in suggesting to her country’s rulers the type of eco-living in Nuvali where people and nature thrive together. Chanel’s highest placement could be a TOP 12 and the lowest could be a TOP 18 spot. SPAIN, Alejandra Echevarria (photo) – Another Alejandra, but this time a stunner from Europe! Spain’s representative last year, Adriana Reveron was the favorite to win the Miss Earth title, but to the dismay of many pageant experts and fans she only ended up in TOP 8. Could Alejandra avenge Adriana’s non-inclusion in the TOP 4 with her being also as one of the favorites to win the Miss Earth 2009 crown? Well, that is possible considering Alejandra lives up to the expectations of pageant experts and fans with her TOP 15 performance in the swimsuit and evening gown competition. Her only obstacle to the crown would be her closest rivals, Cuba’s Jamillette Gaxiola and Poland’s Izabela Wilczek. TONGA, Mary Greatz – Mary proves to be a great representative of her country. She won the Miss Island Cove Resort award during one of her group’s tree-planting activities in this resort. But she is just one of those girls who are enjoying their stay here in the Philippines and treasuring the experiences and friendship that they have gained so far. UKRAINE, Karina Golovata – Karina is one of the blonde European delegates with hair just barely touching the shoulders. Her best performance was during the TOP 15 final evening gown competition; never mind her hideous gown, which she carried very well with her great catwalk skills. She is always seen with Miss Georgia and the two are inseparable in almost all the activities. Karina’s highest placement could be a spot in the TOP 18 semifinals. VENEZUELA, Jessica Barboza – Jessica is proving to be just as competitive as the past Venezuelan delegates to Miss Earth . She was in my TOP 5 for the best performance in swimsuit and evening gown competition. If the pageant were not held in the Philippines and the judges had not been mostly Filipinos, Jessica could have clinched the Best in Evening Gown award as she gave the most flawless performance among the TOP 15 finalists in this segment. Her communication skills is also impressive as she speaks English fluently, thanks to her being a lawyer with a post- graduate degree. Jessica could take it all, and if she did, she could bring Venezuela its third major international crown this year, along with Miss Universe and Miss Intercontinental. The highest placement Jessica could get is the Miss Earth title and the lowest would be a runner-up position. Whew! It was really hard to write this review of the Group 1 delegates as there are at least four girls who could possibly win the Miss Earth crown. My assessment of this group is summarized as such: Possible Miss Earth winner – Cuba, Poland, Spain and Venezuela Possible TOP 8 placement – Czech Republic and Latvia Possible TOP 12 placement – Colombia Possible TOP 18 semifinalists – Albania, Australia, Georgia, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Martinique, Pakistan, South Africa and Ukraine Next, my review of the Group 2 delegates. Let’s see how many from this group who could potentially be Miss Earth or earn a spot in TOP 18! http://www.criticalbeauty.com/Miss_Earth_2009_Davids_Reports.html [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
