MALLARI REPORTER Six contestants in the Miss Earth 2009 beauty pageant were all praises for the Philippines when they visited The Manila Times to promote the upcoming contest later this month. “I love the food,” said Miss Tanzania Evelyne Almasi recalling her experience of feasting on pinakbet pizza. Pinakbet is local dish of vegetables and pork that comes from the Ilocos Region in Northern Luzon. Miss Puerto Rico Dignelis Taymi Jimenez said that she was impressed with the warmth and hospitality of Filipinos and how beauty queens were treated as celebrities in the Philippines. She joked about how friendly the Filipinos were, despite the fact that her countryman Miguel Cotto will square off with Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao this weekend. Besides Almasi and Jimenez, the other candidates who visited The Times were Miss Venezuela Jessica Barboza, Miss Latvia Diana Kubasova, Miss Jamaica Jenaae Jackson and Miss Guam Maria Luisa Santos. Environmental advocacies The candidates then related their individual environmental advocacies. Barboza, seeing that the use of reusable shopping bags was not encouraged in Venezuela, decided to design one with her sister. She managed to convince the shopping malls in her country to mass-produce the bag they designed and encourage shoppers to use them instead of plastic ones. “I’m proud every time I saw a shopper using the bag we designed. It’s my legacy,” she added. Jimenez, a lawyer and a journalist, is working with the media and utilizing her knowledge of law to make environmental advocacies constitutionally valid in Puerto Rico. “Everything that we do has an impact on the environment,” she said. Indifference is something that Kubasova has to deal with in Latvia. She revealed that her country is not very aware of the woes resulting from global warming like floods and super typhoons. Besides educating her countrymen in environmental protection, she’s actively involved in animal protection for the past six years, which includes saving stray dogs and cats. Almasi discovered that caring for the environment could be effectively taught to young children using games and music. “You don’t have to do humongous things. It’s the little things that count like disposing of your trash properly,” she said. Jackson expressed alarm that Jamaica’s neighbor Haiti has less than 2 percent of its trees left. “If it can happen to Haiti, it can happen to us,” she said. Jackson is actively involved in leading young people fight deforestation, “It is good to start educating them on these issues while they’re young,” she added. Santos, an elementary school teacher in Guam, has experienced working with the First Lady of the protectorate concerning environmental initiatives. She is careful to walk the talk in front of her students who know the advocacy she is representing. “I have a box in our classroom where my students put in items for recycling,” she said. Santos recently led the planting of 23 trees in the Adacao Elementary School where she teaches. She has Filipino blood. Even though she is based in Guam, she regularly spends Christmas in Las Piñas City (Metro Manila). She left a profound parting shot on the issue of saving the planet, “The biggest threat is the lack of awareness among people,” she said. Date Posted: Wed, Nov 11 2009, 20:04:35 Ex-beauty queen, Ibinabo, escapes jail as court dimisses application National News Nov 12, 2009 By Innocent Anaba LAGOS — Former beauty queen and actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima, narrowly escaped being sent to jail by trial judge in the matter, Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of a Lagos High Court, which yesterday momentarily revoked her (Ibinabo) bail and ordered that she be remanded in Kirikiri Prison, Lagos. Shocked Ibinabo, dressed in a black skirt suit, broke down and wept repeatedly, saying ‘sorry ma’. She was joined by her counsel, who pleaded for mercy. The judge, however, reversed her order following plea by other lawyers present in the court, who urged her to temper justice with mercy. Most of the lawyers pleaded with the judge, urging her not to send her (Ibinabo) back to prison custody. The court also dismissed Ibinabo’s application, seeking leave of the court to travel abroad to attend the forthcoming Miss Earth 2009 Pageant, describing the application as frivolous, vexatious and abuse of court process. Ibinabo was sentenced to five years imprisonment for dangerous and reckless driving causing the death of one Dr. Giwa Suraj but sought leave of the court to travel abroad to attend the forthcoming Miss Earth 2009 Pageant, which will be held in Manila, Philippines. Ruling on the application to travel abroad, Justice Oluwayemi said: “I hereby revoke the bail granted to the applicant and she should be taken to Kirikiri until I am satisfied that the appeal is pursued diligently. I am flabbergasted that this application is brought before me. It is unfortunate that you brought yourself before me without thinking. “How can I grant leave to a convict to travel? How can a convicted person represent Nigeria in Miss Earth contest? A convict is not an accused person, the discretion of the court cannot be exercised in favour of a convict,” the court held. Justice Oluwayemi maintained that justice was not only for the applicant but also for the deceased. “Justice is not only for the applicant, it should be for both parties and for the children of the deceased who are abroad and can no longer pay school fees due to the death of their late father. If I grant the application, she (Ibinabo) may not come back because the family has instituted a N200 million suit against her,” the judge said. “It will not be in the interest of justice and the society to grant a convict leave to travel out. There was no letter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs for her to represent Nigeria simply because as a convict she cannot represent Nigeria any longer even if she had done that in the past,” the court said. Miss Air 2009 Czech Republic She is Miss Earth Material, also not sure she will be noticed, because she is too shy, anyway she is beautiful, intelligent and finally i want to see someone from Europe to be in. Miss Water 2009 USA This girl will be in for sure. No doubts. I don't like her beauty, i don't think she is beauty queen, but she has the best personality of the pageant, she really WANTS to be Miss Earth and the judges feel this special energy from her. Miss Fire 2009 Ukraine Very natural, very Miss Earth, she is a mix of Alexandra Braun and Stephanie Lesage, something really in the middle, not for the crown, but for top-4 for sure. Krystle Brown is in the Philippines making her bid to return home with the Miss Earth Bahamas crown which she will compete for against 70 other international beauties. Joanna Brown has hit the ground running at her international competition - the Miss World competition which is now underway in London, England - in her quest for a world title. Krystle's title quest hit a snag upon arrival in the Philippines when her baggage was delayed for 24 hours. Once her luggage was recovered, she made a lasting impression with the media and pageant officials, according to Gaynell Rolle, president of the Miss Bahamas Beauty Pageant Organization. Krystle is looking to be crowned the winner at the finale on Sunday, November 29. During her reign, Krystel lived up to her title of environment beauty ambassador, completing over 400 hours of community service. "We were so proud when she volunteered to become an official member of the Bahamas National Trust," said Rolle. "She believes in her cause and is a living testimony to the phrase beauty with a purpose." Since the Miss Earth pageant has an environmental cause, it is primarily looking for young women who will stand for the protection and preservation of the planet. Miss Earth contestants aren't just physically beautiful, they are environmentally knowledgeable as well. In the weeks leading up to the finale, Brown and her competitors will be evaluated on each activity, with the top 16 advancing to the semifinals. The winner of the pageant is bestowed the title Miss Earth. Her runners-up are named after the other natural elements — Miss Fire (third runner-up), Miss Water (second runner-up), and Miss Air (first runner-up). MISS BAHAMAS WORLD Miss Bahamas World Joanna Brown was among 35 contestants chosen to make an appearance on the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). Joanna has also advanced to the semifinal round of the talent competition, an important fast track event. The winner of the talent segment automatically advances to the semi finals of the Miss World competition.
