The National Costume contest was held in the afternoon at the Amazing Theater at Pasay City.

Miss Tanzania won the Best in National Costume. Miss Puerto Rico won the Placenta Special Award (whatever it meant, anyway) and Miss Guam won the Miss PASIGandahan event (the award name is a combination of the main river that passes through Manila and the Filipino word for beauty).

The Gems of the Earth: Discovered, Unearthed, Unveiled

The much-anticipated day sparkled as 90 of the most beautiful environment diplomats from all over of the world paraded for the 2009 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant press presentation, held on November 4, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at Mader’s Garden, the residence of style guru Ricky Reyes. Like real gems, the young ladies shared their lustre to illuminate the cause of Mother Nature, a continuous campaign they have been waging as “beauties for a cause.”

This year, the Miss Earth Pageant is seeking to amplify the message of nature brought by the devastation caused by recent typhoons in the Philippines, the sand storm in Australia, and the floods in India. “Mother Earth is telling us something. The recent tragic events must affirm us to continue our pro-environment efforts and compel those who haven’t acted yet,” said the reigning Miss Earth 2008 Karla Paula Henry, who was also a leading figure in the relief operations that followed the Ondoy calamity. Carousel Productions, Inc. President Mr. Ramon S. Monzon agreed and shared, “There were warnings in the past which most of us ignored and were complacent about. The recurring abnormal weather pattern around us is a reminder that we can never afford to wait until the worst scenario happens. We must act with urgency.” Ms. Lorraine Schuck, CPI Executive Vice President, further added, “We can all contribute by simply changing our lifestyle and seriously implement the 4Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Respect. The delegates of Miss Earth this year have been spreading this message by sharing ways on how to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.”

2009 is also a year of interesting changes and development. A new member of the Carousel family, Ms. Ping Valencia, has been appointed as Vice President for External Affairs. She is a leading image consultant and a top model of her generation. Another pleasant surprise is the new Miss Earth Crown, a Ramona Haar masterpiece adorned with different natural gemstones donated by each participating country, set for unveiling come Coronation Night, which shall take place outside Luzon Island for the first time.

The pre-pageant activities started with the National Costume Competition that took place on the same day of November 4, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. at the Amazing Theater, formerly Film Center of the Philippines, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

The Grand Coronation Night will be on November 22, 2009, Sunday, 7:00 p.m. at the Boracay Convention Center, the centerpiece of Boracay Eco Village Resort in Yapak, Boracay Island, Aklan. It will be televised locally by ABS-CBN Channel 2 and internationally by The Filipino Channel. Eighteen (18) semi-finalists will be chosen this year. They will be trimmed to twelve (12) until only eight (8) exceptional ladies would remain to compete for the following titles: Miss Earth, Miss Earth-Air, Miss Earth-Water, and Miss Earth-Fire.

The 2009 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant is also being supported by Miss Earth Foundation, Discovery Suites, the official delegates’ residence in Manila, Fairways and Bluewater, the official delegates’ residence in Boracay, PAGCOR, Nestle Nesvita and Karilagan International Travel & Tours Corp. Bakit ba nagmamadali ang Carousel sa press presentation? Halos kararating lang ng mga delegates and one thing, ung iba pagod pa sa biyahe tapos isabak kaagad, and on the ssame day national costume competition award.

I am out of the country (Philippines), pero I am sure walang masyadong publicity and Miss Earth. Nagkakaroon lang ng curiosity after the press presentation. Sino bang PR stunt nila? Kunyari Miss Sudan and Miss Cuba could earn intl press mileage by having them posed together or pa gimmick press release.

I am still worried, what if Philippines win again? Last year was a big disaster. Karla is pretty enough but her figure is big big disappointment. Ask her to compete in any international pageant, i am sure she will not even make it to the semi finals. Sorry I am just telling what I believe and feel.

Halos ganoon din ang style, ung mga preliminary competition ay kalat kalat. It looses its purpose having the girls compete in groups and judged by different panel of judges. Walang saysay.

Ang presentation ay ganoon pa rin. Dapat may laging bago and please do away with those so called overview or helicopter shots during swimsuit and evening gown competitions sa final night. They are just too outdated.

They should also clearly define what they are looking for a girl that best represent their objective in promoting the environment chuva and not blinded by nationalism.

GABORONE - Botswanas representative at Miss Earth pageant, Tumisang Sebina has been disqualified from the pageant because of her height.

The beauty pageant has been planned for November 22 in the Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center, Island of Boracay, Philippines.

Miss Earth-Botswana project manager, Beatrice Barrows said in an interview that they were disappointed by the turn of events because they never thought height would be an issue in the pageant.

Barrow said they were only informed about this some weeks ago, noting that the organisers wanted at least 1.64m while Tumisang is 1.55m tall.

She said that has taught them a lesson and expressed the hope that they would not repeat the same mistake, adding that was somehow a challenge to them to prepare their contestants well in time so that when situations like these arise they were not caught unawares.

However, she explained that Tumisang was engaged in different environmental projects around the country. Miss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant promoting environmental awareness.

Along with Miss Universe and Miss World contests, Miss Earth is one of the three largest beauty pageants in the world in terms of the number of national-level competitions to participate in the world finals.

Botswana has since had representatives who have undertaken a number of environmental projects locally. Nametso Ngwako, 19, who was the 2008 Earth Ambassador, represented Botswana at Miss Earth beauty pageant in Manila, Philippines last year.

The Miss Earth winner serves as the spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organizations.

My Ultimate top 4 are: USA, Czech Republic, Paraguay, and Venezuela and the rest of the girls in my list can also be top 4, top 8, or top 16. Miss Earth needs someone like Miss USA to represent them. She's just pure awesome! Czech Republic can't be ignored. I love her youthfulness, being only 19? right? She's so natural and she reminds me of the typical winners from the past editions of Miss Earth, during it's peak years. I call the last two years a recession lol. She is just so fresh. Paraguay is the sex. If she wins, she'll probably be the sexiest Miss Earth. Now that I think about it, she would probably be Miss Fire, I noticed Miss Fire's are usually the sexiest ones. (Poland 2003, Paraguay 2004, Serbia 2005, Venezuela 2006, Spain 2007, Brazil 2008, compared to the other girls in the top 4, those girls were the sexiest) For Venezuela, All I can say is she came to the Philippines to win it, and without too much effort. It seems like she already knows she was going to be a favourite when she lands in the Philippines. I am torn between Poland and Czech Republic as my top European. But Teresa won by .000001 lol. Malta is so refreshing, I just love her. Latvia is a gorgeous blonde! Thailand very sweet aura about her and she's very prepared. A lot of the other girls seems to love her a lot too. Spain is really sexy, but she seems really timid so far. Cuba is a natural beauty. After seeing her picture without makeup. I was sold. How could someone look so gorgeous! Slovak Republic I know didn't make the semi-finals of Miss Intercontinental so a lot of you are all like, she doesn't deserve to make it, but that was Miss Intercontinental, this is Miss Earth, she could be totally playing a different game at this round. Korea is so edgy. Love her hair. Turks and Caicos Another natural and refreshing beauty, she's my favourite black candidate this year. Philippines has time when her features appear really manly, but she gots the goods in terms of everything else, however, a top 8 placement is the best I wish for her. Singapore is so humble. I love how she was so awed by the beauty of the other contestants not realizing how beautiful she was as well. She reminds me of Riyo Mori, but a prettier version. If she has the Riyo Mori attitude, I won't be surprised if she made it all the way to the top 4. But OMG, I saw her gown :S, it was Prom-ish. Puerto Rico is another well-prepared delegate, and I must say VERY WELL improved. Alernates: There are so much that I won't even bother listing them because then I would suddenly think about replacing someone else in my top 16 LOL. The ladies arrived at past 8pm at the venue and were greeted by the friendly staff of Nuvo. Diners were mesmerized with stunning beauties of Miss Earth 2009 contetstants. The ladies enjoyed their dinner that includes pasta with breaded crunchy and spicy chicken breast, soup of the day, Italian bread, pudding and bottomless fresh fruit juices and cappucino for coffee lovers. Present at the venue were Ramon Monzon, Lorraine Schuck and Peachy Veneracion, all officials of Carousel Productions. The ladies will be preparing early tomorrow for the big event, the Press Presentation and the National Costume Competition in the afternoon.
