EVENING GOWN REVIEW by Mr. Vitug ~

A GLAMOROUSLY SEXY NEW TWIST!
MISS EARTH 2009 EVENING GOWN COMPETITION AND NEW CROWN UNVEILING: A GLAMOROUSLY SEXY NEW TWIST
by Joseph Vitug
The PAGCOR Casino near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Paranaque again played host to the Miss Earth Evening Gown Competition. But this year, there was a new twist: this was the first time ever that all the delegates were not on hand to be judged as they paraded in their evening gowns. Instead, there were preliminary rounds held as the three groups of delegates toured around the Philippines, and the best five of each group would then be competing against each other for this final round for the special award.

But before the competition went underway, they decided to allow this event to coincide with the launching/unveiling of the new Miss Earth crown designed by Ramona Haar. There was a little attempt at pomp and ceremony to launch the new crown, and the proceedings were hosted by famous Filipino-British football player and model Phil Younghusband. It began with a still video conveying messages about ecology and environment, and how the crown was created from recycled silver and gold and embedded with jewels mined or farmed from various countries in the world (80 countries, as it was declared). This was then followed with a song number from Faith Cuneta, who sang an adequate rendition of Des’ree’s inspirational 1994 smash “You Gotta Be.” This was then followed by a parade of local male models in black suits parading some gemstones. Then, another song number, this time from renowned belter Dessa, who performed her own reverent take of the 1988 Olympic theme song from Whitney Houston, “One Moment In Time”. Finally the crown was unveiled, with the reigning Miss Earth Karla Henry holding the crown aloft on the red pillow, and a turnover ceremony was held with designer Ramona Haar present to hand over the crown to Carousel Productions’ Executive Vice-President Lorraine Schuck. Have to admire the effort to integrate all those jewels into a single crown, and it actually worked.

Then, the usual concession to the sponsors enfolded as the sponsors (the Jubilee Presidents’ Foundation of the Rotary Club of Makati and PAGCOR) delivered speeches about their environmental projects and held their own evening gown fashion show. Finally, the main event unfolded as Miss Earth-Water 2006 and now director of the Miss Earth Foundation Cathy Untalan stepped in looking resplendent in a black lace gown to get the evening gown proceedings underway. Similar to the final swimsuit competition, they first presented the ladies who did not make the Top 15. However, instead of the ladies introducing themselves with a microphone, the host made the introductions and the ladies paraded their evening gowns briefly as Cathy introduced them by name and country. Take note after looking at the photos of the preliminary evening gown events of Groups 1 and 3 and witnessing the preliminary contest of Group 2 at posh mall Greenbelt 5 in Makati, the majority of the delegates did not wear their competition gowns. Also conspicuously absent onstage were media favorites Mz. Latvia (Diana Kuvasova) and South Sudan (Mary Deng Kudum).

Before I proceed with the 15 evening gown finalists, I would like to give my notes on the non-finalists who made a major impression with their brief presentations: Miss Cuba (Jamilette Gaxiola) shimmered brightly in her brightly sequined white evening gown—it was mildly surprising that reports were wrong that she made the cut in her group as it turned out it was Miss Ukraine instead; Miss Dominican Republic (Mariel Garcia) showed that blue can compliment her dark complexion looking chic in a form-fitting gown; Miss El Salvador (Mayra Aldana) was provocatively sexy in a low-cut V-necked flouncy gown; Miss France (Magalie Thierry) may have sported a poufy white monstrosity, but she strutted with aplomb in it and showcased that she knew more catwalk tricks beside the patented Riyo Mori Flash and Taliana Twirl; Miss Honduras (Alejandra Mendoza) was surprisingly impeccably elegant in her clean white number; Miss Kosovo (Elza Marku) channeled a little bit of Miss Universe 2009 2nd runner-up Gona Dragusha with her updo, but her pink gown with bare sides was probably a tad more risque than what Audrey Hepburn would’ve worn, but nevertheless it was a gorgeously sexy number; Miss Martinique (Pascale Nelide) was simply vibrant in her sequined red number; and Miss Puerto Rico (Dignelis Jimenez) was elegant yet provocative in a sheer pink number with strategically placed sequins.

An additional note that I would leave as a blind item: one cellar-dwelling delegate forgot to step forward when she was initially introduced by Cathy Untalan, apparently oblivious to what was going on around her–the delegate after her then did her stuff before she last-minutely then stepped forward to do her turn at the front of the stage. Hint: she alphabetically came after a delegate who was a conspicuous no-show that evening.

The 15 evening gown finalists were presented alphabetically, and they descended down a center stairstep with eight gentlemen associated with the Rotary Club escorting them while they navigated the steps. All 15 finalists proved deserving of belonging to the hallowed club, and fortunately none of them copied the so-called “patented gown moves”–they gave their own unique stamps instead. Let’s start with…

BRAZIL – Larissa Ramos. She sported a gorgeously sexy aqua sequined number showcasing revealing cleavage. She stirred up a major rise in collective temperatures with her presence.

COLOMBIA – Alejandra Castillo. Some keen observers noted that her gown was patterned similarly to Karen Agustin’s red Barraza number back in Miss Universe 2002, but it was still distinctive enough for her to make a smolderingly elegant impact.

GUAM – Maria Luisa Santos. From the black gown she wore in Subic, she changed into a one-shouldered white sequined number (think Michelle Obama’s inaugural dinner gown and Miss Universe 2009 1st runner-up Ada de la Cruz). With her updo, she looked impeccably elegant.

INDIA – Shriya Kishore. She strutted confidently about in her aqua-blue number like Bollywood royalty—all we needed was a dashingly handsome Bollywood actor miming a serenade to her.

ITALY – Luna Voce. She moved very simply and her light lavender gown was a simple design compared to the rest of the competition, but she did convey a classically elegant presence.

KOREA – Park Ye-Ju. She changed from her pink gown to a provocatively low-cut and revealing green gown. She had to adjust her shoulder sleeves a bit, and there was a potential for a wardrobe malfunction as I thought there was only an inch remaining before we could see nipples.

MEXICO – Natalia Quinones. She changed from her flowy pink gown back in Subic to a one-shouldered yellow satin gown with floral accents—unfortunately this was a bad strategy as this gown was the weakest of the bunch; it was too pageant-patty and dated for my taste.

PARAGUAY – Gabriela Rejala. She switched from her chocolate gown back in Subic to a white beaded number with sheer midriff. The gown was actually better-looking than her previous number, but it was also punishing for her current figure, emphasizing her voluptuousness to the max—maybe she is making a statement that there should be room for larger, curvier ladies out there instead of fashion’s emphasis on size 2 or lower.

PHILIPPINES – Sandra Inez Seifert. As expected she again sported the Michael Cinco rainbow-sequined confection with intricately flouncy, feathery chiffon accents at the skirt area. And she again made an indelible impact with it, and to my eyes, yes, it’s the most unique-looking gown of the group. My take on the eventual verdict? Read on…

POLAND – Izabella Wilczek. She displayed surprisingly strong runway chops showcasing her red evening gown with long chiffon train. She lifted the train up at the back, but it wasn’t the Riyo Mori Flash but a unique move, and she was an awesome diva walking in it. If we talk about dramatic catwalks, she was in a close match with another lady clad in red.

SPAIN – Alejandra Echevarria. She sustained her status as a favorite clad in a low-cut V-necked green gown with fish-scale golden sequined embroidery patterns on her skirt.

THAILAND – Rujinan Phansreetum. Clad in a red sequined number, she spun and twirled about with dramatic flair, but she was neither imitating the Taliana Twirl nor the Dayana Spin. It was more of a more earlier vintage model done by Latin beauty queens about a decade or so ago, but still has astounding impact—in my opinion, she was neck-and-neck with Miss Poland in the catwalk category.

UKRAINE – Karina Golovata. Her one-shouldered black gown was ostensibly simple, but there was drama with the sheer panels at the front and back—for maximum effect, the wearer of this gown was not supposed to wear any underwear, or attempt to create that illusion by wearing a flesh bodystocking; my bet was she did the former.

U. S. A. – Amy Diaz. She smoldered about wonderfully in her rose embroidered white evening gown, though she was overshadowed by the smolderingly provocative sexiness of the gowns sported by Mz. Brazil, Korea, and Ukraine, and the fierce catwalks of Mz. Poland and Thailand.

VENEZUELA – Jessica Barbosa. The skirt portion of her strapless silvery green sequined gown was similar to the intricately leafy fabrics on Miss Philippines’ gown, but the design on the bodice was more of a lovely conventional beaded and sequined pattern than what Sandra Seifert wore. She potentially could’ve pulled forth an upset and outdo Sandra, but a minor wobble of an otherwise flawless presentation as she walked to the front of the stage may have spelled the difference that led to the eventual final verdict.

As usual, sponsors’ prizes were handed out. Miss Philippines won Miss Jubilee Presidents’ Foundation, Miss Dominican Republic won Miss AVSCOR, Miss Poland won Miss HDR Management, and Miss Korea won two sponsors’ prizes—Miss Eagle Express and Miss Asei.

Four special awards were likewise formally awarded. First, the National Costume Award was formally presented to Miss Tanzania (Evelyne Almasi). Miss Photogenic, voted online at the Miss Earth website and on a Miss Earth Facebook account, was deservingly awarded to Miss Czech Republic (Tereza Budkova). Miss Friendship went to Miss Switzerland (Graziela Rogers). We discovered after the show how tight the Group 3 ladies turned out to be as they exuded extreme enthusiasm congratulating the Miss Congeniality winner and posing for group photos.

Finally, the Evening Gown Award went to Miss Philippines, Sandra Seifert. In my personal opinion, Sandra deserved to win this award, even more than the Best in Swimsuit Award that she won a couple of days earlier at Fontana Resort at Clark. Does this secure her status as THE frontrunner for the Miss Earth crown? Possibly, but take note that there are no guarantees in this pageant—two years ago, Miss Venezuela Silvana Santaella won the same two awards (along with a whole host of sponsors’ prizes), but she didn’t end up winning the grand prize at the end. Still her path to securing at least an element remains on track.

Thanks to CB for the pictures.

It’s Tough Being Beautiful
November 18, 2009 · No Comments

will tell you honestly now. It takes work to be beautiful. And the saying that there are no ugly women only lazy women holds very very true.

The person who said it must have been a beauty queen of some sort.

The last time we were so sleep deprived was the time we travelled 8 hours on the bus from Subic to Mamburao. If my sleep-deprived-working-in-safe-mode brain still serves me well that is.

We had our final long gown competition last night in Pagcor and Sandra, Miss Philippines, definitely had the most outstanding gown among the top 15 finalists. We were blown away the moment she stepped on stage. Alongside Best in Swimsuit, she thus also bagged Best in evening Gown.

3am and we leave for the airport to Iloilo. A convoy of buses carrying girls in states of unconciousness blazes through the surprisingly still busy streets of Manila. We arrive at the airport and everyone files out. You’d think that a bunch of Hollywood celebrities have arrived since almost 80% sport large sunnies. But really we’re all hiding behind our oversized shades trying to conceal our fatigue.

Iloilo’s CPU was the venue for the talent competition tonight. It was a tough fight but Tahiti danced her way amidst other hiphop, traditional and song performances. She definitely wow-ed the audience and the judges with her nimble hips.

As I was watching the contestants, I did wish I had continued with dance more. Haha. I miss dance so much! Especially my loves jazz and hiphop. I could have been up there with a fighting chance. LOL.

But I’m so proud of Neu!! And so happy for her. She is such a sweetheart. Tonight she was excellent on stage. Not only were her moves fantastic she won the judges over with her beautiful smile. Yayyy!!! Group 3 for the win! So far we’ve got Best in Talent, Best in National Costume and Miss Congeneality to our group’s name. Wo00ot! I hope somebody from our group gets Top 4 spots.

Just a couple more days to Coronation before a new queen is crowned. It’s tiring but hang in there girls. This will probably be the only time in our lives we do something like this.

No one ever said being beautiful was easy.

Former supermodel to be Miss Earth jury member

VietNamNet Bridge – Elite Vietnam’s manager and former supermodel Thuy Hanh has agreed to join the jury for the Miss Earth 2009 pageant in the Philippines.

Thuy Hanh

She went to Philippines on November 18 to meet the organizing board and contestants.

Hanh said she gained some experience as a jury member of the Miss Intercontinental pageant in the past but she was still nervous because Miss Earth is among the largest beauty contests in the world.

The Vietnamese former supermodel and other jury members will have to choose the top contestants of the pageant.

The final night of Miss Earth 2009 will take place on November 22 on Boracay Island in the Philippines. Thuy Hanh will be there in a night gown designed by Hoang Hai. On November 11, the Vietnamese jurywoman will be interviewed and shot in a video clip to broadcast on the final night.

This is the second time Vietnam has been represented in the jury of the Miss Earth pageant. The first is Nguyen Cong Khe, former chief editor of the Thanh Nien daily in 2007.

Meanwhile, model Truong Thi May, who missed the pageant due to an accident, was invited to be a guest at the final night.

THE HUNT FOR "EARTH WOMAN" BEGINS ~
by Giovanni Paolo J. Yazon
Contributor

AN inclement weather usually affects the attendance of people to an event. But it was a different story during the Miss Earth 2009 press presentation of candidates, held at Mader’s Garden in Valle Verde last Nov. 4.

The heavy rain showers wet-dirtied the constructed runway, stage as well as the lavishly set up audience seats at the garden area. It also delayed the show for an hour. But the tremendous downpour did not stop members of media and fervent Miss Earth followers from trooping the residence of style guru Ricky Reyes in Pasig City.

The number of candidates who will vie for the crown currently worn by our very own Karla Paula Henry has skyrocketed to 80 this year! But one thing has not changed: Miss Earth continues to remind us that beauty is neither just about wearing two-piece swimsuits and shimmering evening gowns, nor what’s inside the contestants’ makeup bags. It has more to do with what are in their hearts, and how can they preserve and protect the environment.

With the racks and ruins brought about by tropical storms Ondoy and Pepeng recently, this “search for a cause,” established in 2001 by Carousel Productions Inc., seeks to amplify the message that, “Mother Earth is telling us something.” Ramon Monzon, the organization’s president, said: “There were warnings in the past which most of us ignored and were complacent about. The recurring abnormal weather pattern around us is a reminder that we can never afford to wait until the worst-case scenario happens. We must act with urgency.” Executive vice president Lorraine Schuck added: “We can all contribute by simply changing our lifestyle and seriously implement the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and [above all] RESPECT.”

Notable changes

The organization also welcomed its new vice president for external affairs, image consultant and former model Ping Valencia. She replaced the “grand dame of beauty,” Joji Felix Velarde, who died of cardiac arrest last May. A new crown will also be unveiled on pageant night. Jeweller Ramona Haar crafted the Miss Earth tiara for this year, and designed necklaces and earrings that symbolize the earth, air, water and fire—all of which will be worn by the top four winners during official functions.

Instead of the top 16-8-4 selection process being done since 2005, 18 ladies will be picked to go on in the semis this year. From among them, 12 will be chosen for the evening gown, and then eight will move to the final round—the interview segment—to determine the three runners-up and the winner. The coronation night will be held outside of Luzon for the first time. It will conclude in the island of Boracay, Western Visayas.

18 roses

The grand staircase in Reyes’ magnificent home became the backdrop of this year’s press presentation. The event proved to be so intense for the candidates who seemed to have already battled it out for the semi-final slots. Here are 18 Earth women who are deemed capable of doing Karla Henry’s tough job:

Belgium’s Isabel van Hoof, 18, is a dead-ringer for pop princess Britney Spears. She pursues a degree in elementary education at the Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen in the province of Antwerpen; Larissa Ramos of Brazil, 19, is a biology student at the Universidad Federal de Amazonas.

Canada’s Lateesha Khamila Ector, 25, is a customer service agent who graduated with a degree in psychology at the Concordia University in Montreal. She describes herself as a big melting pot: “My father is a Venezuelan while my mother has Chinese and Scottish parentage. My parents were both born in Trinidad and Tobago and their respective families migrated to Canada in the ’70s.”

Alejandra Castillo de Munera of Colombia, 22, a political science major at the Universidad Libre de Colombia, wants to become a lawyer someday, “to strengthen the environmental laws in my country, and if possible, in the whole world to ensure a better place for the future generations”; Czech Republic’s Tereza Budkova, 18, is a stunning high school student who grew up in Greece.

Jamillette Gaxiola of Cuba, 19, is a top bet by most Miss Earth aficionados. She is a communications major at the Community College of Southern Nevada; France’s Magalie Thierry, 22, has Spanish and German roots. She is completing a master’s degree in biology and ecology. She wants to become an educator someday.

Shriya Kishore of India, a 23-year-old hotelier, has a way with words ala Sushmita Sen. She obtained her hotel management degree at the Manipal University in Karnataka state; 22-year-old fashion design student Yeju Park of Korea, a taller and leaner version of actress Ara Mina, believes that “it is possible for progress and nature to go hand in hand.”

Diana Kubasova, 20, comes from a wealthy family. She became popular in Latvia after starring in a local TV show. Often likened to Paris Hilton, she owns “Lilly Pet,” a pet boutique and spa; Theodora Banica of Luxembourg, 21, is a psychology major at the University of Luxembourg. She is a cross between TV host Donita Rose and Hollywood actress-cum-humanitarian Audrey Hepburn.

Our very own Sandra Inez Suravilla Seifert, 25, is a registered nurse who earned her degree at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York. If Venezuela had a back-to-back victory in Miss Universe, why couldn’t we have it in Miss Earth? After all, the best Miss Universe we never had is so prepared—evidently witty, voluptuous, speaks from the heart, and proves that Asians can have impressive runway skills.

Spain’s Alejandra Echevarria Pedrajas, 20, is a business administration student and a professional singer. The organizers of Miss Spain pageant was supposed to send her in Miss International, but Pedrajas preferred to participate in Miss Earth, “because it fits my personality, not to mention my enthusiasm with nature and great interest in the preservation of the environment.”

At 6 feet and 5 inches, Aheu Deng Kudum, 18, of South Sudan now holds the record being the tallest woman ever to participate in an international beauty pageant. The feat of this high school student has been submitted to the Guinness World Records for inclusion and certification as the “World’s Tallest Beauty Queen”; To outdo the performance of Miriam Odemba who finished second overall last year, Tanzania sent Evelyne Almasi here in Manila, a 24-year-old model. Her tree-inspired ensemble won Best in National Costume.

Thailand’s Rujinan Phanseethum, 20, is a junior communication arts student at the Bangkok University. She looks like a porcelain doll and has an understated class, and loveliness; and after wins in Miss Universe and Miss Intercontinental, Venezuela might experience another rich harvest season in Miss Earth, with Jessica Cristina Barboza Schmidt, a 22-year-old lawyer.

United States’ Amy Diaz, 25, is a strong contender for the Best in Swimsuit award, what with her well-toned body. A semi-finalist in the Miss USA 2008 tilt, she earned her diploma in broadcast communication with a minor in psychology as well as post-graduate degrees in business administration and sports management at the Barry University.

Miss Earth’s grand coronation night will be held on Nov. 22, Sunday, 7 p.m., at the 3,000-seater Main Hall of Boracay Ecovillage and Convention Center. It will have a delayed telecast on ABS-CBN-2 and The Filipino Channel at 9:30 p.m.

COCOA BABES AND CREME CONFECTIONS
by Joseph Vitug

Before I proceed to post my Homestretch Review, I would like to pay tribute to ladies who I believe deserved better attention than they have received. These ladies in general have the facial beauty, the trim and buffed figures, and maybe even the sympathetic personalities deserving to make the final cut in a less competitive year. I know the majority of the Filipinos were fixated on the spicy Latinas and our very own home country bet, and yes, the attention given to them was actually merited and well-deserved. And I also know that the pre-judging is actually over so this appeal may be actually too late to sway the powers-that-be. But I do fervently hope that a fair verdict would prevail and there would be room for several of these ladies in the final cut.

Let me start with the ladies of the Caribbean. Yes, heavy attention was made to the fairer-skinned Spanish speaking island ladies from Cuba (Jamilette Gaxiola) and Puerto Rico (Dignelis Jimenez). But in my eyes, the real stunners were ladies of a darker complexion–At Miss Universe this year we had the Mocha Babes – France’s Chloe Mortaud, South Africa’s Tatum Keshwar, Domincan Republic’s Ada Aimee de la Cruz, and Switzerland’s Whitney Toyloy, although pundits including myself might add Honduras’s Belgica Suarez and Netherlands’ Chantal Avalon Weyzig. At Miss Earth, we have the Cocoa Babes.

I had a high expectation that the Cocoa Babes would make a major splash when I first saw them during the National Costume Presentation and watching them on video taken by my Mabuhay Beauties friend and colleague Boyet Blas during the Press Presentation, but cultural conditioning (Well, considering the prevalence of ads for skin whitening cosmetic products and treatments, we Filipinos (and maybe add most Asians to the mix) always tend to favor fairer complexions and the luck of the draw conspired to only create a muted response to these sensational stunners. Three of them had the misfortune of belonging in the extremely cutthroat and competitive Group 1, for starters, so it was extremely difficult for them to edge out those major favorites.

In my reckoning, the Cocoa Babes comprised of:

JAMAICA – Jenaae Jackson. She was clearly the lowest-key of this group of stunners, but she still showcased that she was a complete package of the highest caliber. She was clearly the best delegated fielded by this country so far. She at least had earned a minor special award during the Eco-Fashion Show at the Podium.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Mariel Garcia. Maybe her resemblance to Miss Universe 2002 contestant Ruth Ocumarez is not a good portent for her prospects, but she was another one who I believe deserved to be taken seriously. In my reckoning, she was way better looking than, say, Themys Febriel two years ago. She at least got a sponsor’s award during the Evening Gown Competition Finals event at Casino Filipino Paranaque.

MARTINIQUE – Pascale Nelide. Those long, black Peaches & Herb/A Taste of Honey braids! That lean, lissome, supermodel’s frame! That beautifully radiant smile! That vibrantly charming personality! Why hasn’t she garnered a special award or even a sponsor’s prize? She’s too gorgeous to be overlooked and I reckoned she deserved to be a Cocoa-Babe-Most-Likely. She’s the best lady sent to this pageant since Miss Earth-Air Murielle Celimene.

TURKS & CAICOS – Alison Capron. I concede her complexion is more a shade of mocha instead of cocoa, but one might argue the opposite about Ada Aimee de la Cruz, and let me just place her in this hallowed category for convenience sake. At least belonging to Group 2 allowed her to garner the right attention to be short-listed for the swimsuit finals, and she made a great impression when photos of her were released of the sans-makeup pre-judging stage, that she may end up being the Cocoa-Babe-Most-Likely after all. Yes, the best representative from this country in any Grand Slam pageant since Miss Universe 1987 semifinalist Carmelita Ariza.

I’ve also noticed a few Europeans who have not been buzzed about by the mainstream Philippine media, though pageant pundits and a few fans have probably seen their merits from the get-go. Keeping with the metaphor, let me present to you the Creme Confections:

CZECH REPUBLIC – Tereza Budkova. Actually I was heartened that she was starting to build the right buzz as she won Miss Photogenic–a deserving award, if you ask me. She was arguably leagues better than her two predecessors who made the final cut so for that alone she deserved to be a shoo-in for the finals. But the embarassment of riches from Europe means that her status in the Top 18 is not guaranteed, and she also belonged in the hyper-competitive Group 1, so prior to her Miss Photogenic award, buzz has been muted.

SLOVAK REPUBLIC – Lea Sindlerova. Facewise, she has got what it takes to join her Czech colleague into the finals. But admittedly, she was overshadowed figurewise by several astounding contenders this year.

LATVIA – Diana Kubasova. Like three of the Cocoa Babes, she was in the hyper-competitive Group 1, so it was tough seeing her miss out in the shortlists for evening gown and especially swimsuit, as I thought she possessed the best figure of them all. She also has the disadvantage of being a light blonde, and ladies with light blonde hair failed to make the final cut since 2004. I was hoping she could be the blonde to break through, but buzz has been building on Miss France (Magalie Thierry) especially since her sensational presence in the Swimsuit Competition Finals at Fontana Resort that Diana’s buzz has been dissipating and status as the blonde-most-likely-to-break-the-drought was transferred to the French belle.

Not-so-white as the Creme Confections but also performing at a consistently stratified level deserving tribute, I’ll create a category where she alone is the member, the Creme Brulee Delight. That lady was Miss Netherlands (Sabrina Anijs).

After conceiving the creme metaphor, I also thought of a sub-category applicable for ladies from the British Isles known as Creme Anglaise Treats, though admittedly their sparkle had been inconsistent that I don’t foresee any of them to be in serious contention for the finals, even if they deserved kudos for still being competitive-enough worthwhile contenders. They include Mz. Northern Ireland (Kayleigh O’Reilly), Scotland (Sarah Finlay), and Wales (Dominique Dyer).

I do hope several of the aforementioned underrated gems would get their due. I know surprises are likely to abound and I hope some of these would end up to become pleasant surprises.

JUST ME!

JOSEPH

Miss Earth 2009 Group 1 Delegates Review
by deybid007

I will now give a review of each delegate of the Miss Earth 2009 pageant. My review is solely based on my observations as a correspondent for Critical Beauty, and my impressions on each delegate from the day they arrived up until the Final Evening Gown competition. I start with a review of the Group 1 delegates and read on how they fare in this competition and what I think they could reach this coming Finals Night on Nov. 22 at the Boracay Eco-Village Resort and Convention Center.

ALBANIA, Suada Saliu – Suada’s first week here in Manila was a disappointment. I don’t like the way she looks with her messy hair. I have interviewed Suada through e-mail and she knows how to communicate in English, not that fluently but at least she can clearly convey her message about her environmental advocacy. Her height and experience as model in her country could bring her a spot in the TOP 18 semifinalists. But she is not the assertive enough and I have the impression that she's in the Philippines only for a vacation.

AUSTRALIA, Melinda Heffernan – Melinda’s advantage is her good communication skills as she comes off as intelligent based on my e-mail interview with her. Her weakest point is her height which is not proportionate to her body and she is outshined by the favorites in her group. However, Melinda is doing something to be noticed by the press by posing a lot for the camera. She's a potential TOP 18 semifinalist.

BAHAMAS, Krystal Brown – Krystal is one of the black delegates hailing from the Caribbean. She has charmed the Filipinos with her smile and sweet personality. Krystal is overshadowed by the other black delegates in this competition and she is more than happy to participate in this pageant that will bring her good memories and lasting friendships.

CHINA, Yan Xu – Yan Xu is a model in her country. She is not among the most facially beautiful among the Asian girls, but she is definitely one of the tallest along with her "twin" sister, Miss Hong Kong’s Wang Shan Shan (I say twin sister because they almost look alike and they are inseparable in every activity they do. Yan Xu won the Miss Earth Fontana 2009 title mainly because Fontana is owned mostly by Chinese. Yan Xu will not enter the semifinals as she is overshadowed by stronger Asian delegates like Misses Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia.

COLOMBIA, Alejandra Castillo Munera – Alejandra looks older for her age if she doesn't make herself up well. One example is during the tree-planting activities at the Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. She looked like she was the chaperone of the other Miss Earth delegates. Alejandra’s strongest point is her catwalk skills that earned her a spot in the TOP 15 finalists of the swimsuit and evening gown competition. Compared to other Latina beauties, her beauty is overshadowed by the better-looking delegates like Misses Venezuela and Cuba. The highest placement Alejandra could get is a TOP 18 semifinalist spot and she might surprise us all if she makes it to the TOP 18 and possibly to the TOP 12.

CUBA, Jamillette Gaxiola (photo) – Jamillette is definitely the face of this year’s Miss Earth pageant. The hottest favorite to win the Miss Earth title and could make history as the first from Cuba. One good thing that you should know about Jamillette, even if she knows she’s the top favorite, is that she’s very humble, sweet and very approachable especially to those who want to have their pictures taken with her. She’s also the favorite of the staff from the largest TV network in the Philippines, ABS-CBN. That’s why she is almost in every ABS-CBN’s coverage, most notably in the tree- planting activities in Nuvali.

Jamillette could definitely take it all come finals night, but I hope that she won’t suffer the same fate of those previous top favorites who did not make it to the TOP 4.

CZECH REPUBLIC, Tereza Budkova – Tereza’s beautiful face and her warm smile earned her a soft spot among pageant experts and fans. Her most recent win as Miss Photogenic may have sealed her a spot in TOP 18, as most of the winners of this award become automatic sure shoo-ins for the semifinals. Tereza’s weakest point may be her communication skills; she’s not fluent in English, though she clearly knows how to convey her environmental advocacy message to the public. The highest placement Tereza could get is TOP 8 and the lowest is a TOP 18 spot.

DENMARK, Patrica Tjornelund – Patrica is the first black delegate that Denmark has sent to this pageant. And would you believe when I asked her if she knew the first Miss Earth who came from her country, she replied she did not even know about it! It’s really unbelievable that they did not even research about the Miss Earth history. It should be part of their training if they have it in their country. Anyways, Patrica is short and she resembles Matet, a Filipina actress in the Philippines. Patrica will be one of those who have enjoyed their stay in the Philippines and will just watch at the sidelines during the finals.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Mariel Garcia – Mariel is among the tallest delegates in this year’s pageant. She knows how to strut her stuff just to be noticed by the press, but she can't hold a candle to the likes of Misses Jamaica and Martinique. She is always in the company of her fellow Latina delegates like Cuba, Colombia and Spain. Mariel’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot but I doubt if she can advance further.

GABON, Marlyne Lea Ayenne – Marlyne is her country's first ever representative to this pageant. She is always seen in the company of another black delegate, Miss Guadeloupe. Marlyne does not attract much press attention compared to her fellow African delegates Misses South Africa and Tanzania. I don't think she'll place at all.

GEORGIA, Nona Diakonidze – Nona has a beautiful face matched with her luscious lips. She is one of those delegates who are always on the go during their activities like in their Nestle Wellness badminton activity at the Yonex Center in Mandaluyong City. She was selected as one of the TOP 5 Nestle Wellness Beauties, and if Miss Earth had a fast track for the Sports event, Nona could definitely win it. Her catwalk skills is above average and she could give the top favorites a good fight in this department. Nona’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot.

GUADELOUPE, Marie-Ange Seymour – Marie-Ange could have the same fate as Miss Gabon’s Marlyne Lea Ayenne; they are not among the best black delegates in this competition. But you see can that they are enjoying their stay here in the Philippines and Marie-Ange definitely would have a lot of stories and experiences to tell to her family and friends when she returns to Guadeloupe.

HONG KONG, Wang Shan Shan – Wang Shan Shan is the most beautiful among the Chinese delegates which include China, Chinese-Taipei and Macau. I was disappointed that the Miss Earth Fontana 2009 title was not given to this delegate as she deserved it more than Miss China. She was always seen together with Miss China’s Yan Xu and they are almost inseparable. Wang Shan Shan’s highest placement could be a TOP 18 spot as she also has good catwalk skills which was evident during the swimsuit and evening gown competition.

HUNGARY, Korinna Kocsis – Korrina’s advantage is her beautiful face even without make-up. Although I questioned her placement as one of the TOP 15 finalists in the swimsuit competition. Her body and catwalk skills are average, and there are others who are more deserving than her to make the 15 finalists of the swimsuit competition. Korrina could definitely make the TOP 18 semifinals with her beautiful face, but I don't think she'll advance to the next round.

INDONESIA, Nadine Zamira Syarief – Nadine is the best Indonesian delegate so far that has been sent to this pageant. Some Filipino pageant experts and fans compared her to former Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2007, Anna Theresa Licaros in terms of beauty. Nadine’s biggest advantage is her English communication skills - considered a rarity among Indonesian representatives in international pageants. Nadine is really passionate about her environmental advocacy in Indonesia. Nadine could make the TOP 18 with her charming personality, good communication skills and her passion for caring for Mother Earth.

ISRAEL, Noy Michaelov – Noy is a model in her country; she is good in catwalk and has also good English communication skills. She is always seen in the company of Miss Indonesia during their activities here in Manila and out of town. Noy was truly beautiful when she wore her hair in a bun and in yellow gown during the Evening Gown competition. Noy could make the semifinals if she plays her cards very well during the pre-judging selection process.

JAMAICA, Jenaae Jackson – Jenaae is one of the most beautiful black delegates together with Miss Martinique. But I was disappointed from what I’ve seen in pictures on the Internet - it’s not the same Jenaae you see in person. Maybe I was expecting more of Jenaae in terms of fierceness in her looks and poses in front of the cameras; what I see is a sweet- looking Jenaae who is reserved and a bit shy. If I had to choose a black delegate to be included in the semifinals, I would chose either Miss Jamaica or Miss Martinique based on their their looks alone.

JAPAN, Takada Tomomi – Takada’s advantage is her catwalk skills and her charming personality. She is somewhat a cross-over between Riyo Mori and Kurara Chibana in terms of looks and fierceness. When she introduced herself in the Filipino language, the crowd gave her an applause - which automatically makes her as one of the favorites among the Filipino public. She wouldn't have any problem entering the TOP 18.

LATVIA, Diana Kubasova – Diana has one of the most beautiful faces from Europe. She looks like a doll when she stands in a bevy of European beauties. Diana’s downfall might be her body and not so good catwalk skills. She could penetrate the TOP 18 with her beauty alone but she could be outranked by other European beauties like Misses Spain, Czech Republic and Poland.

MARTINIQUE, Pascale Nelide – Pascale together with Jenaae are among the best black delegates in this competition. Pascale’s curly locks are beautiful, she is always warm with anyone who asks to have their photo taken with her. Pascale's disadvantage is that she can’t communicate in English - which may ruin her chances in entering the semis. If Pascale dazzles the judges during the pre-judging selection process, she just might make it.

PAKISTAN, Ayesha Gilani – Ash - as she is called by her family and friends - is the best delegate Pakistan has ever sent to this pageant. Ash’s only disadvantage is her short stature and sometimes she looks older in some pictures. Ash is vary passionate about caring for Mother Earth as suggested by the e-mail interview with her. Her passion is her biggest advantage - and if she successfully demonstrates it during the pre-judging selection process, she could clinch a TOP 18 slot.

POLAND, Izabela Wilczek – Izabela is one of the most beautiful faces in this competition even without make-up. Izabela has a big chance to be the next Miss Earth; her closest rival to the title would be Cuba’s Jamillette Gaxiola and Spain’s Alejandra Echevarria. She can speak good English and is a strong animal rights advocate. Izabela’s beauty and elegance cannot be ignored as she also has the best evening gown presentation last Nov. 16th at the PAGCOR Theatre in Paranaque City. Her highest placement could be a possible Miss Earth winner and the lowest could be a runner-up position.

SOUTH AFRICA, Chanel Grantham – Chanel maybe not be the best candidate South Africa has sent to this pageant, but she delivers as expected in this competition. Her biggest advantage is her great personality coupled with her good English communication skills. Chanel was seen talking with the president of the Nuvali Company in one of their tree-planting activities in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Maybe she is interested in suggesting to her country’s rulers the type of eco-living in Nuvali where people and nature thrive together. Chanel’s highest placement could be a TOP 12 and the lowest could be a TOP 18 spot.

SPAIN, Alejandra Echevarria (photo) – Another Alejandra, but this time a stunner from Europe! Spain’s representative last year, Adriana Reveron was the favorite to win the Miss Earth title, but to the dismay of many pageant experts and fans she only ended up in TOP 8.

Could Alejandra avenge Adriana’s non-inclusion in the TOP 4 with her being also as one of the favorites to win the Miss Earth 2009 crown? Well, that is possible considering Alejandra lives up to the expectations of pageant experts and fans with her TOP 15 performance in the swimsuit and evening gown competition. Her only obstacle to the crown would be her closest rivals, Cuba’s Jamillette Gaxiola and Poland’s Izabela Wilczek.

TONGA, Mary Greatz – Mary proves to be a great representative of her country. She won the Miss Island Cove Resort award during one of her group’s tree-planting activities in this resort. But she is just one of those girls who are enjoying their stay here in the Philippines and treasuring the experiences and friendship that they have gained so far.

UKRAINE, Karina Golovata – Karina is one of the blonde European delegates with hair just barely touching the shoulders. Her best performance was during the TOP 15 final evening gown competition; never mind her hideous gown, which she carried very well with her great catwalk skills. She is always seen with Miss Georgia and the two are inseparable in almost all the activities. Karina’s highest placement could be a spot in the TOP 18 semifinals.

VENEZUELA, Jessica Barboza – Jessica is proving to be just as competitive as the past Venezuelan delegates to Miss Earth . She was in my TOP 5 for the best performance in swimsuit and evening gown competition. If the pageant were not held in the Philippines and the judges had not been mostly Filipinos, Jessica could have clinched the Best in Evening Gown award as she gave the most flawless performance among the TOP 15 finalists in this segment. Her communication skills is also impressive as she speaks English fluently, thanks to her being a lawyer with a post- graduate degree. Jessica could take it all, and if she did, she could bring Venezuela its third major international crown this year, along with Miss Universe and Miss Intercontinental. The highest placement Jessica could get is the Miss Earth title and the lowest would be a runner-up position.

Whew! It was really hard to write this review of the Group 1 delegates as there are at least four girls who could possibly win the Miss Earth crown. My assessment of this group is summarized as such:

Possible Miss Earth winner – Cuba, Poland, Spain and Venezuela

Possible TOP 8 placement – Czech Republic and Latvia

Possible TOP 12 placement – Colombia

Possible TOP 18 semifinalists – Albania, Australia, Georgia, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Martinique, Pakistan, South Africa and Ukraine

Next, my review of the Group 2 delegates. Let’s see how many from this group who could potentially be Miss Earth or earn a spot in TOP 18!

Boracay host to 80 beauty queens

THE WORLD-FAMOUS island paradise of Boracay is the setting of the 9th Miss Earth beauty pageant—with the newly built Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center as venue for the coronation night on Nov. 22, to be aired at 10 p.m. on ABS-CBN.

Boracay is hosting 80 Miss Earth candidates, now billeted at the Fairways and Blue Water.

This is the first time the Miss Earth finals will be conducted outside Luzon. Its first seven editions were held in Metro Manila, while last year’s was at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

Likewise, this is the first time Boracay is hosting an international beauty contest. Pageant organizer Carousel Productions said it will take full advantage of the magnificent location.

“We will show the beauty of Boracay from sunrise until after sundown. The production will show the pageant night as if it happened throughout the day,” Carousel executive vice president Lorraine Schuck told Inquirer Entertainment during the candidates’ press presentation Nov. 4 in “Mader’s Garden,” the Pasig City residence of beauty guru Ricky Reyes.

At the same press presentation, Schuck revealed another surprise: “The pageant’s official jeweler Ramona Haar designed a new crown, embellished with some 80 gemstones donated by countries participating in the pageant.”

To adhere to the pageant’s environmental thrust, the new crown also used 100 percent recycled precious metals comprised of 14-karat gold and argentums sterling silver. It is estimated to cost $100,000 and will require escorts to guard it wherever it is displayed, said Schuck.

These developments approximate the upgrades that rival beauty tilt Miss Universe made this year. The Donald Trump-owned pageant was held in a resort destination, the Bahamas, and also revealed a new crown.

The Miss Universe contest marked its first back-to-back win with Venezuela’s Stefania Fernandez, taking the title from compatriot Dayana Mendoza.

Hometown bet Sandra Inez Seifert is poised to inherit the crown from outgoing queen Karla Paula Henry, also of the Philippines.

Seifert, a Negros-raised Filipino-German nurse, already snagged two major preliminary awards—Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown.

Portraits of grace and wellness
November 19, 2009, 2:27pm

The beautiful women of Miss Earth 2009 show off their fine form: The collective result of a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, exercise and a tall, confident posture.

The Miss Earth candidates gladly share their secrets to achieving beauty through a healthy lifestyle for our benefit:

Diet and nutrition

Miss Japan Tomomi Takada, for example, says a proper diet is her investment for maintaining good posture by keeping her bones healthy and strong.

“Yes I am very much concerned about maintaining good posture. I know that a tall and confident posture depends on strong and healthy bones. I mostly eat fish, vegetables, and foods rich in amino acids and calcium.

“I like milk and its other products because it contains calcium and its good for bone growth and bone health. In Japan, we eat foods that are rich in calcium such as fish,” she reveals.

Latina beauty Gisela Menossi, who is representing Argentina in the pageant, also believes in eating only the right foods.

“To keep my bones strong, I drink milk and eat cheese, vegetables, fruits, fish, and foods that are rich in calcium. Yes I love milk. I make sure that I drink four glasses of milk a day to keep my bones strong and healthy,” says Menossi.

Bones and exercise

But there’s more to a healthy lifestyle than just eating the right foods in the proper amounts. For Miss Venezuela Jessica Barboza, exercise is a vital component of living a healthy life.

“I do a variety of workouts. I alternate pilates and yoga. I do kickboxing to release myself from all the stresses of the day,” says Barboza.

Miss Spain Alejandra Echevarria also works out regularly. “To maintain the health of my bones, I engage in exercises and get involved in sports.”

Coming from a place famous for its beaches, it’s no surprise that Miss Australia Melinda Heffernan works out near the sand and surf. She’s so rigorous about her workouts that she describes it as being similar to military training.

“I attend this boot camp near the beach where I do weights and running thrice a week,” says Heffernan.

As for Miss Jamaica Jenaae Jackson, she took her workouts seriously after getting chosen to represent her country for Miss Earth. “I started working out after winning Miss Earth-Jamaica; but before that I never really worked out. Nowadays I run on the treadmill for cardio, and I also do some weight training twice a week to help build up my muscles,” she says.

Meanwhile, Miss Earth Philippines Sandra Seifert says that one can mix working out and having fun: In her case she really enjoys sports, so her hobby is at the same time her workout. Seifert says that she gets her workouts from playing basketball, volleyball, and swimming. She’s actually a competition-level swimmer, having won a swimming competition in Jakarta, Indonesia when she was a student.

Tall, poised and confident

Some Miss Earth 2009 candidates also pointed out that a tall and confident posture also shows a woman’s character and interior qualities.

“I agree that people, especially women, should have good posture. Good posture makes one taller and more confident. It shows independence. Everyone should have the independence and the confidence to stand up for what is right. That, for me is what having a good posture projects to other people,” says Takada.

Having a good posture is also a sign of health and sexiness, as well as strength and courage, says Miss Spain Alejandra Echevarria.

“Good posture shows off your good health and sexiness. Furthermore, a tall and confident posture shows that you have the guts and the strength to face the difficulties of everyday life. If you slouch, you look weak and insecure,” Echevarria explains.

Beauty. Strength. Health. Courage. Independence. These and more are the womanly qualities that come into focus whenever a woman stands tall, poised and confident.

These are the very same qualities women commemorate whenever they drink a healthy glass of Nesvita Pro-Bone Protection, the milk that provides a woman all the essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium that strengthens her bones and helps prevent osteoporosis.

Furthermore, Nesvita Pro-Bone Protection is low in fat and has CalciLock, a combination of minerals that allows the body to absorb more calcium from the milk it drinks.

So let’s all drink to Nesvita Pro- Bone Protection, to health and wellness, and to womanhood – embrace her strength, celebrate her beauty and let her courage give hope to all.

Miss Earth Guam represents island well: Rock concert this weekend

Pacific Daily News staff • life@guampdn.com • November 13, 2009

Guam residents have a chance to show their support for one of their own, by going online and voting for local beauty Maria Luisa Santos in the 2009 Miss Earth Pageant.

By heading to the pageant's Web site, fans can vote for their favorite Miss Earth model, says Miss Earth Guam National Director Frank Santos. The model who receives the most votes by the pageant date of Nov. 22 will be awarded with the "Miss Photogenic" prize.

Maria Luisa Santos, 24, currently is at Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center in the Philippines with 89 other contestants from around the globe for the competition -- and she's turning heads.

During preliminary events the Dededo resident earned the distinction as the "most natural beauty" at this year's pageant -- having received the Miss PASIGandahan Award -- and was voted in the top five in the preliminary evening gown competition, says Frank Santos.

"We're very proud of Malu and we're excited that she has garnered such distinction so early in the competition -- it's long overdue," Frank Santos says.

"We have an opportunity to further place our island on the map and I invite everyone to support Miss Earth Guam by voting for her online."
