Subject: Reigning Miss Earth winners blow into Manila

EVEN as Tropical depression "Juaning" developed into a storm, battering most of the Bicol region and Aurora Province, the reigning Miss Earth winners who were acrowned in Nha Trang,Vietnam last December flew in for a 10-day visit to the pageant’s birthplace and graced a series of activities to raise consciousness on the need to save and protect the environment as well as to promote the forthcoming Miss Earth pageant in November in Pattaya, Thailand.

Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria, 21, from Bangalore, India, captivated members of media and the general public during her Manila tour. "I am so amazed at the warmth of my reception here in Manila. Filipinos are so giving, so welcoming, I just feel so at home even if I got terrified for a moment during the earthquake early this morning," she said during a press luncheon at the Discovery Suites’ Columbus Bar in Ortigas, Pasig City.

Faria is a freelance model who is also in her final year in college majoring in Psychology. She is the first Miss Earth from the subcontinent and only the second Asian to wear the crown, after our very own Karla Henry in 2008. Nicole is also aware of the responsibilities attached to her title and is always ready to dirty her hands in planting trees, cleaning the beach and other activities to save our environment. "No pain, no gain," Nicole added.

Also visiting Manila with Nicole were her runners-up Miss Air 2010 Victoria Shchukina of Russia and Miss Water 2010 Watsaporn Wattanakoon of Thailand. Shchukina, a finalist at the last Miss Earth pageant, was recently crowned as Miss Air 2010, after Ecuador’s Jennifer Pazmino decided to give up her title in order to wed her fiancé. A 23-year-old university graduate, Victoria was chosen over the other finalists to replace Pazmino because of her personal advocacy to save the forests in line with 2011 being the International Year of the Forests.

The bubbly Watsaporn, 22, a TV anchor from Bangkok, expressed her excitement over the forthcoming Miss Earth pageant in her country. "This is a chance to give the pageant’s advocacies, which are global concerns, more mileage even as Thailand will also showcase its beautiful places, rich culture and hospitable people just like you Filipinos," said Watsaporn in fluent English. The Communication Arts graduate Chulalongkorn University was previously an exchange student in the US.

The Miss Earth 2010 winners were joined at the presscon by the Miss Philippines-Earth 2011 winners namely Athena Inperial (Earth), Jonavi Quiray (Air), Muriel Orais (Water), Michelle Gavagan (Fire) and Tarhata Rico (Eco Tourism).

The Miss Earth beauties took part at the opening games of the Philippine Ad Congress’ badminton tournament July 30. Last Monday, they paid a courtesy call at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, visited the SM Supermarket to promote its "I am Plastic-Free Campaign" and visited the Tayuman Elementary School in Rizal as part of the Miss Earth Foundation’s "I Love My Planet Earth School Tour." The ladies also sashayed on the runway in eco-friendly creations during a special fashion show at the Robot Bar in Makati City last Friday and at the Discovery Suites last Wednesday.

The fierce and feisty ladies also devoted time for coastal clean-up and tree planting at the Las PiĂąas-ParaĂąaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area, and at an environmental forum at the De La Salle University.

Meanwhile, Ms. Earth 2010 Nicole Faria left quite an impression when she tripped on the stairs—but immediately stood up—during a fashion pictorial.

“Patuloy ang pakislapan nina Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria mula India, at ang kanyang runners-up na sina Miss Russia Victoria Shchukina at Miss Thailand Watsaporn Wattanakoon,” the report said on “TV Patrol,” Aug. 3. (The beauty queen, Miss Earth Nicole Faria, Miss India and her elemental queens, continued to sparkle their glitters.)

The moves of Miss Earth for the fashion pictorial in Antipolo was near-perfect, marred only when she slipped while walking down the stairs.

“Napaupo siya sa hagdan habang hawak ang korona. Buti na lamang, hindi natuloy ang paggulong ni Nicole pababa sa hagdan,” the report said. (She fell seating on the stairs while holding the crown. It is good that Nicole did not tumble down the stairs.)

Quick to gather her wits, Ms. Earth immediately regained her poise and “rumampa nang todo at tinawanan ang nangyari.” (ramped the runway full of gusto and laughed-off the situation.)

Subject: Miss Earth Bahamas 2011 Kerel Pinder: Pi Upsilon Omega members of Alpha Kappa Alpha plant tree for Emancipation Day

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- Picnics on the beach, swimming in the pool, back yard bar-b-ques and simply napping and doing nothing, are the standard activities that most Bahamians indulge in as they celebrate the last public summer holiday in our society – Emancipation Day/August Monday. Members of the Pi Upsilon Omega Chapter of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, decided that this Emancipation Day should be different. These women and their children saw the need to tackle the battle of ‘non-community’ that is sweeping the nation. Therefore this group, decided to respond to the request put forth by Philip Simon and the entire ‘WE THE PEOPLE” movement and committed to planting a tree in an area that would be enjoyed by all on the island of Grand Bahama.

“The goal today was simple, we aimed to make this tree planting initiative, our first green initiative for the year, an exercise about community building in a practical way that enhances our environment, while providing an opportunity to share global education with our kids on ways to fight climate change, reduce our dependence on nonrenewable resources, while supporting the environment – all this taking place, because of the planting of just one tree,” expressed Chapter President, Anya Valdes.

The newly crowned Miss Earth Bahamas, native of Grand Bahama Island, Kerel Pinder and daughter of Sorority Member, Joyce Pinder, joined the efforts put forth by the group to aid in the planting of the tree. “Tree planting is a simple way for anyone to do some good for the environment. The planting of this Neem tree, because of its medicinal qualities will improve and protect, not only the quality of resources found on Grand Bahama Island, but also the quality of life that exists on the island.”

The Neem Tree is planted on East Mall Drive on the median South of the RND Circle. Valdes shares that today was a community effort and thank yous are extended to several partners that made the event possible. Members of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited for selecting the site for the tree to be planted. Mrs. Anna Valdes a homegrown native horticulturalist, who donated the Neem tree from her back yard and The DeGregory Team of Dapl Farms who donated over 20 gallons of soil and mulch. “It’s important that the community is involved again – helping to develop, protect and reconnect with an area that has played an important role in development of our island’s history,” explained Desmond DeGregory, proprietor of Dapl Farms.

This is the first of several Green initiatives scheduled to take place throughout the island. With the sorority’s mission to ‘serve all mankind’, members understand that today’s event best represents a Chinese Proverb which states: One generation plants the trees, and another gets the shade.

Members of the Sorority encourage and invite citizens and members of all organizations on the island to join forces to execute all community outreach initiatives. The women of the Pi Upsilon Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority believe that everyone plays a role in making our island, and by extension our nation, a better place for all humankind.

Subject: Miss Earth Canada contestant raising funds through yoga event

"Mind, Body and Sushi!" being held at Love it Yoga Friday, August 12

AMHERSTBURG — Amherstburg native Jaclyn Miles is trying to do her part to help the environment.

She is looking to a fundraising yoga event to help get her to this year's Miss Earth Canada.

Miles is co-hosting "Mind, Body and Sushi!" at Love it Yoga, located at 134 Richmond St. Aug. 12 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. She describes it was a fun class for people of all levels of yoga as well as those who have never tried yoga before.

"Anyone can come," said Miles. "We're going to make it a really fun environment."

Miles said a friend's business is donating sushi so that it may be enjoyed after the yoga session. The idea came from her friend who said he would donate sushi for a fundraiser. She said she developed the "Mind, Body and Sushi!" idea with Love it Yoga co-owner Ena Montaleone.

Proceeds will go toward her $1,800 entrance fee to the Miss Earth Canada competition, scheduled for Aug. 17-19 in Montreal. Miles said the organization speaks out on environmental issues with participants presenting platforms about environmental work they do in their home communities.

Miles works with students at École St.-Jean Baptiste and hopes to further an environmental club at that school. She said efforts are being made to educate students about the environment, whether it be simply cleaning up litter or planting a tree, and she hopes to see environmental clubs started at all schools in Canada.

There are 30 spots available for the Aug. 12 fundraiser with admission being $15. For info, contact Montaleone at 519-736-4500 or e-mail loveityoga@bellnet.ca.

Other fundraisers Miles has planned include a fundraising "tree" set up at The Ginger Jar, a business owned by her father. She also hopes to have a car wash in mid-August.

Subject: Miss Earth beauty queens read about Nature to kids

In hell or high water, they didn’t disappoint.

Heavy rains and floods did not stop reigning Miss Earth beauty queens from here and abroad from trooping to the Inquirer on Saturday morning to stress the importance of environmental protection.

In an Inquirer Read-Along session, Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria read “Sa Bakawan (In the Mangrove Forest)” with fellow title holders, Miss Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon and Miss Air Victoria Shchukina, before an audience of about 60 children.

Winners of the 2011 Miss Philippines Earth pageant, led by Miss Philippines-Earth Athena Imperial, kicked off the session with a brief presentation on the environmental hazards posed by plastics.

Imperial was assisted by Miss Philippines-Air Jonavi Quiray, Miss Philippines-Water Muriel Orais, Miss Philippines-Fire Michelle Gavagan and Miss Philippines-Ecotourism Tarhata Rico, who used photos and handmade puppets to illustrate the dangers of improper disposal of plastic wastes.

“Sa Bakawan,” a story about mangroves and the threats they face from pollution and mishandled solid waste, was authored by Miss Earth Foundation executive director Cathy Untalan, former Miss Philippines-Ecotourism Reena Sarmiento and children’s writer Mae Astrid Tobias.

The book was published by Adarna House and the Miss Earth Foundation.

Returning storyteller Dyali Justo read Adarna’s “Isang Mayang Uhaw” by Victoria Añonuevo, a story about a resourceful bird who finds a way to drink water from a glass.

The Miss Earth beauties were no strangers to working with children as they had also participated in similar activities in their hometowns.

“Today’s kids are very smart and disciplined and they can grasp information really well,” Faria noted.

Hailing from India, Faria had also engaged in volunteer work as a teacher in her hometown. “I’m going to use this experience as a motivational tool when I get back home. I’d tell our kids there, ‘You know the kids in Manila? They were so behaved and participative.’ I hope that inspires them.”

Braving floods

Wattanakoon, the titlist from Thailand, had the same observation: “The children were very participative. They really impressed me. I hope the kids back in Thailand can be this confident, too.”

“I loved today’s session,” said Shchukina, a Russian. “I wish we could do it again.”

The children braved the early morning rain and floods to make it to the Inquirer main office in Makati City for the session. Among them were 18 wards from the Virlanie Foundation’s Tanglaw Home, also in Makati.

“We really make it a point to bring the children to the read-along sessions so that they will be encouraged to read. But because of the rains this morning, we initially thought it would be best to skip today’s session,” said their guardian Salve Bance-Coloma.

The children, however, “complained,” she said. “They insisted on attending the session despite the weather.”

Eight-year-old Erika Rueda expressed her resolve: “We really wanted to come because we always enjoy the sessions.”

“We get to read new stories, meet celebrities and learn new things. Today, I learned how to conserve water and how to dispose of trash properly,” Rueda said.

Twelve-year-old Ma. Sofia Garong of Pasig Elementary School was at first reluctant to go to the session because of the rains and heavy traffic.

Worth the trouble

“It was worth it. I really enjoyed the experience,” Garong said after overcoming her fears and making it to the Inquirer. “The stories taught me a lot of lessons. I learned to be more concerned about climate change.”

Garong came with regular Inquirer Read-Along partner Digna Aquino of the Library Hub in Pasig, along with other students from Palatiw Elementary School and Pasig Elementary School.

Patrice Cabug, a Grade 6 student from Palatiw, said she was “surprised that the session turned out to be fun.”

“I have always loved to read but I particularly liked the Miss Earth readers. They really know how to relate to kids,” Cabug, who considered herself a bookworm, said.

Hosted by Junior Inquirer editor in chief Ruth Navarra, the July 30 session was held in cooperation with Cathy Untalan and the Miss Earth Foundation.

Giveaways

Reusable bags courtesy of Envirosax and books courtesy of Vibal Publishing were also given away as prizes during the question-and-answer portion.

The children also received some 2,000 books donated by the Rotary Club of Makati. Club secretary Francis Macatulad, past president Pepito Bengzon, director Aiai Galvez and Gary Quemado handed over the books.

Saturday’s read-along session capped a series of such sessions held in July, which included 14 simultaneous sessions at SM malls nationwide on July 19 in celebration of National Children’s Book Day and a special session with “handi-capable” artists at Rizal Park on July 16.

On July 9, children’s show host Tonipet Gaba read a story to around 40 children in a session marked by the first commercial appearance of mascots from the children’s show “Sabadabadog.”

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (7/30/11) - Miss Earth USA is being held in Daytona Beach Florida beginning Sunday, July 31 through Aug 3 and two of Muhlenberg County's own girls will be representing the state of Kentucky.

Muhlenberg County residents Tony and Michelle Armour along with friends and family, held a send off party for the girls on Sunday, July 24.

Miss Carlee Janaye Knight was crowned Miss Earth Kentucky and Miss Kendra Leigh Duran was crowned Miss Teen Earth Kentucky at the Kentucky Earth Pageant, on April 10. Each young woman won a huge prize package including all expenses, travel, lodging, meals, and entry fee to Nationals paid.

According to Michelle Armour, the girls' competition wardrobe is also being supplied. They received an allowance for their gowns from Ziobro’s Formals in Princeton, a photo shoot with Jesse West in Madisonville, and preparations for the contest from C-Taylor Agency in Evansville, among other things.

Carlee Knight represented the state of Kentucky last year as Miss Teen Earth Kentucky, where she traveled to Las Vegas to compete.

Although her age division does not currently compete at the national level, Miss Gabrielle Armour, daughter of Tony and Michelle Armour, is the reigning Little Miss Earth Kentucky.

Also pictured is Amber Ridgway, daughter of Doug and Kara Ridgway, of Bowling Green. Amber was chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Kentucky Pageant. She will compete in a pageant for girls age 10-12, on July 31 through August 1, at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington.

Friends and family of Carlee Knight and Kendra Duran send their best wishes as the girls are on their way to Daytona Beach to compete in the United States Earth Pageant.

Nicole Faria is the first Indian to win the Miss Earth pageant. Since winning that title at Nha Trang, in Vietnam, last December, the 21-year-old model has been traveling all over the world promoting various environmental causes. One of her pet projects is a campaign to clean the lakes of her native Bangalore. She spoke to Global India Newswire recently, while on a vacation in Washington.

Q: Has your life changed in any way after winning the Miss Earth 2010?

A: It has changed a lot — drastically. Right after the win, I started getting better work [and] more work. The quality of work shot up to the stars. And I have met so many new people, so many
nice, very warm-hearted people. I have got to travel the world, see more places, get a taste of different cultures and traditions, which is very satisfying for me.

Q: Tell us about the kind of year you had since winning the title?

A: This year has been, I think, the most memorable year so far. I love traveling — for me, seeing different parts of the world, experiencing new things, learning some things new every day about a different place or person — anywhere I am going — gives me joy. [Now] I have to be very careful of the things I do because I am catering to the needs of my audience. I am a role model for a lot of youngsters. Being my best everywhere I go, I think, that counts the most.

Q: How does it feels to be a role model, at such a young age?

A: It is a huge responsibility. And with a huge responsibility comes a lot of sacrifice. So my partying life, my life with friends, my social life has completely been cut off — for this past one
year, at least. But I am enjoying it. I can’t really complain.

Q: Among other organizations, you also represent the United Nations Environmental Program. What kind of work you do with them?

A: I am currently working on [a] lake-cleaning campaign in Bangalore. [The idea] was to go local, to start off from Bangalore, go national, and head international. I am working with two
companies side by side: one is Sherwood Institute and the other one is the United Way. They are funding [the cleaning of] the lakes of Bangalore.

… Bangalore used to have about 270 odd lakes. I am talking about 30 years ago. Right now.. we have about 81 existing lakes left. We have already started working on 21 of them. It is expanding slowly, but surely. It’s a long-term goal. About three years, minimum. We have different people on board, like engineers, ecologists, environmentalists. We are looking at the beautification part of it, in terms of what plants will attract what species of birds and butterflies. So that way, there have been new species of birds that have come into certain localities. And the people are very happy. And they take their lakes very, very seriously. It is very important to everyone.

Q: Climate change has become one of most important issues of our time. Are you optimistic that we can reverse the damages that have already been done to the environment?

A: Of course, we can. The question is how. Now each of us, whatever we do, on a day-to-day basis, kind of affects the environment in several ways, in drastic ways. If all of us hold hands, if
all of us create awareness amongst ourselves... if you were to talk to people in a social gathering or a couple of your friends about it, they will pass it on to their friends, and the news further
spreads.

Q: In your opinion, what is the greatest environmental threat?

A: Humans, I think. We are the ones who have caused all the problems in the world, like climatic change. These things, some of us think, are not controlled by us, and it is the earth doing things. But we live in a cause-and-effect world. And what we do affects one thing or another. It is a chain reaction. It happens again and again and again.

There is something known as the Garbage Island [in the Pacific Ocean]. It’s twice the size of Texas… there is so much of plastic materials floating around in that area… It’s too big to pick up
and get rid of. There is a lot of marine life that is living in danger right now. Something, I think, we should all take very seriously. … Starting off with the lakes around you. Just respecting
nature. It’s your home — this is Mother Earth. And what we give to Planet Earth, she will give back to us. It’s as simple as that.

Q: You have traveled all over the world. How would you compare the environmental awareness in India with that in the western world?

A: I think it is getting there. I think every country has its own beauty, its own baggage.

Q: Growing up in Bangalore, did you see yourself becoming an environmental activist?

A: To tell you frankly, I have always had two dreams: one was… I always wanted to be famous. I don’t know if everyone had that feeling. But I have always been drawn to… I love the
limelight. I love the cameras. I love all of that.

And [secondly], I have always been an animal lover. Not just animal lover, but simple things like picking up a dog from the street and taking it home, just to bathe it, giving it food, and keep it
with you. But my dad would never let me keep stray dogs. He would always say, “What’s wrong with you? How can you keep a [stray] dog in a house? It has to run out and be free.” [I loved]
simple things like picking up garbage, planting trees. I would sit with my grand mom in her garden. We would just be planting, watering the plants. And I have always loved doing that. I am
a very simple person.

Q: Once your reign ends, what do you plan to do other than modeling?

A: Other than modeling, after my reign ends, I would like to continue, what I am doing now. You know it’s what gives me happiness. Let’s see! I really don’t know what the future holds for
me. All I know is that I am not going to say, “I am going to see where life takes me.” Rather, I am going to see where I take my life after that. I am the sort of person who lives in the moment. I
am going do that for now. It works best.

Q: A career in movies?

A: I am very open to that. I have no issues at all. If a great script comes along why not?

Q: In India, or abroad?

A: Language shouldn’t be a barrier!.

Subject: Philippines Miss Earth Air 2011: Beautiful Muriel Orais Soars Brightly

Author:
Bren Soriano

Date Posted: Sat, Jul 30 2011, 10:09:40

As beauty connoisseur Jim Acosta of Psalmstre, Inc. and CREWorks Asia would put it: “She is living testimony to the statement that despite bad breaks in life, real talent will shine through and not be denied its rightful audience and appreciation.”

She is Muriel Adrienne Isidore Orais, who, on this particular Angelus at a Starbucks branch, comes en punto and engages Women’s Journal in a repartee that is as interesting and revealing of her mind – and, perhaps more importantly, her heart – which is brimming with youthful optimism and wisdom being learned. Here, excerpts from our talk that is more of a recount of her life becoming a bit fast-paced lately and how she’s gracefully coping – and brightly soaring into her newfound limelight.

Women’s Journal (WJ): You are indeed a beauty queen, so what’s the secret behind the beauty?
Muriel Adrienne Orais (MAO): The usual from the experts: Sleep 8 hours a day; Eat fresh fruits and vegetables; Drink a lot of water everyday; for clean, beautiful skin, use Olive-C soap and toner.

WJ: How does it feel being an image model for Olive-C and Miss Earth-Water title winner?
MAO: I am very, very glad. Kasi I’m not used to joining beauty pageants. Now, that’s a big change for me. Being a beauty queen, a lot changed – people get to know me; I get to socialize with other people… My personality developed. I have more confidence now… I have learned a lot from the experience. It is not easy being one, kasi ang daming (naging) challenges, pagsubok na pinagdadaanan namin, kaming lahat.

WJ: Like what?
MAO: Maraming intriga, mga salitang hindi maganda sa iyo, mga hindi totoo. But, okay lang yun lahat – parang part of the pageant. At depende na lang sa iyo how you think about or react to it, sa iyong perception.

WJ: So, inspite and despite all the not-so-good things, ka-career-in mo ba ang pagmo-model at pagiging beauty queen?
MAO: Yes! Gusto ko talaga ang pagmo-model… Now all of it can be part of my life and living. So far, I don’t regret anything that has happened to me ‘coz I became a stronger person, having learned a lot of things from those experiences.

WJ: Where are you coming from as a titled beauty?
MAO: Aside from school-connected beauty pageants, I had a bigger public exposure when I joined and won in the regional Campus Model search in Cebu in 2009 – and won again in the national finals in Manila in 2010… Sir Jim of Psalmstre discovered me at siya at ang CREWorks Asia ang nagha-handle sa akin hanggang ngayon.

WJ: We heard humakot ka ng maraming awards sa pageant?
MAO: Aside from the Miss Earth-Water title (1st Runner-up), I won Best in Amazon Wear, Best in Casual Wear, Miss Photogenic, Best in Long Gown’s 1st runner-up, Miss Ever Bilena, the Gandang Ricky Reyes award, Miss Catanauan Cove, Miss RCBC Top 10, Miss Santacruzan, Miss Globe, and the Rosa Mystica title in the Resorts World Santacruzan parade.

WJ: After Miss Earth, what’s next for you?
MAO: Maybe I will join another contest… But that’s after two years pa; I have to continue my Nursing studies at Velez College where I have just a year to go before graduation…I have to prioritize my duties and responsibilities here in Manila. After a year’s reign, I should be going back to school nga, have more training and after that maybe I could go into bigger competitions – while engaging myself in so many things.

Meanwhile, I have to attend to my many enjoyable duties as Olive-C endorser. I will be a special guest model in the forthcoming Mindanao Fashion Week. It will be held at the Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro on August 6. Psalmstre is sponsoring this grand fashion show that is being produced for the first time by the Oro Fashion Designers Guild led by its Chairman Gil Macaibay.

WJ: What’s your fashion style anyway?
MAO: I’m a practical, casual wear person. Hindi ako mahilig sa branded fashion. In fashion, I think it’s not the label that matters – people don’t look at labels anyway – but the important thing is how you carry yourself. Of course, we should all dress properly for the occasion.

WJ: You’re only 19, so how do see yourself, say, five years from now?
MAO: Maybe… in business. Yes, I want to have a business!

WJ: But why are you into Nursing now?
MAO: Nursing actually is my second fallback. Kasi gusto ko talaga maging flight attendant…Dream ko talaga yun! I want to travel around the world. And if I have enough money, I will. Europe is first in my list to visit, then New York and Manhattan. Puede rin libutin ko muna buong Pilipinas.

WJ: Which place in the country would you like to visit soon?
MAO: El Nido!

WJ: Weren’t you in Palawan for the Miss Earth finals?
MAO: Yes, but we were in Puerto Princesa. Sabi nila, mas maganda ang El Nido – I want to see that “wonder of the world.”

WJ: You have a (romantic) relationship now?
MAO: Wala. I’m very much single pa.

WJ: Until when do you intend to stay single?
MAO: Maybe until I am 23 or 24.

WJ: What’s your ideal man anyway? Someone like your Dad perhaps?
MAO: I didn’t actually get to know my dad… But ideal guy? Someone who will know (knows) how to deal with my Mom Desiree Grace. Dapat ligawan muna niya ang Mom ko… For me, personality matters. And looks – dapat matangkad.

WJ: How many are you in the family?
MAO: Only child lang po ako. I’m using my Mom’s maiden name…because I don’t have a father; I haven’t even met him.

WJ: Is there anything that scares you?
MAO: Be afraid of? Maybe cockroach lang… But, with my own trials and challenges, maybe I can already overcome anything that is threatening… Kasi marami na nga po akong pinagdaanang “scary.” Like, I had surgery last year.

WJ: Surgery?
MAO: Yes, open heart surgery.

WJ: Like, your heart was not in the right place?
MAO: I had a cyst, nakapatong sa lungs ko. A cystic teratoma, they call it… It was discovered last year when I was joining Pinoy Big Brother. Hindi ako nakapasok dahil sa condition ko and as per doctor’s advice… But I look at it as a blessing in disguise. That it wasn’t for me and that there was (is) another path for me…so,am here – nandito na ako, a beauty queen in my own right.

WJ: Any concrete showbiz plans today?
MAO: Yes. And if there are opportunities, why not? Like, I see it as “some times lang na mabibigyan ka ng chance.” Lalo na kapag marunong na akong mag-Tagalog dahil iba siempre ang fluent in Tagalog. You know we (Visayans/Cebuanos) are really bulol pag Tagalog na ang usapan.

WJ: Don’t you like it that you have the advantage of articulating in Tagalog and English aside from your own Cebuano dialect. And truth to tell, your Tagalog is not bad. With that raspy twang – due to your lung operation, I suppose – I even find it quaintly distinctive.
MAO: Yeah?! Well, thank you!

WJ: Anyway, to continue, any dream starring role in a movie or TV show?
MAO: Wow, hindi ko pa naisip yan hah!

WJ: Sino ba mga favorite actors mo?
MAO: Angelica Panganiban, Angel Locsin. Gusto ko sila, kasi parang mababait sila… Although I’m not much of TV or movie fan.

WJ: Any other interests or hobbies you have, or plan to go into?
MAO: For now, busy lang po ako talaga sa school., mag-Internet. Pag-uwi ko ng bahay, tulog na kaagad. But I love to read inspirational books – stories of people who make something good out of their lives.

WJ: Do you already have a life’s motto?
MAO: I’ve just realized it: Find meaning and your purpose in life – and make a difference. Especially now as this is my second lease in life… that I have to do some things not only for myself but also to other people. I have to reach out to others.

WJ: Sounds like you’re growing up intellectually. That’s good. But, is there anything that you would want to enhance or change physically?
MAO: Wala! Wala naman po.

5:00pm Friday 29th July 2011

A TEENAGER is hoping to be crowned a beauty queen when she takes to the catwalk for the finals of Miss Teen Earth.

Jade Jones, of Lawns, will be representing Swindon in the country-wide contest to find England's most green and glam teen to become a role model for future generations.

The 13-year-old Ridgeway School pupil will be interviewed by judges and model outfits she has designed herself at the contest held in Birmingham, in September.

“I have been wanting to do modelling for a while and I thought if I enter the competition it would be a foot in the door,” she said.

“My friends think it is really cool, they think I might win.”

She entered by attending a photoshoot, where she was picked to represent Swindon.

The final will see her strut her stuff in four outfits, including a green recycled dress and a T-shirt with an eco-friendly logo.

“I am looking forward to the catwalk and designing the clothes. I’m also looking forward to meeting the other contestants,” she said.

Jade must also raise funds for Miss Earth's community project, 'Girls4Trees', which helps organisations and school's to pay for street clean-ups and community projects.

Miss Teen Earth is the youth version of Miss Earth. Contestants must have a strong knowledge of their country’s culture and environment to fulfil the ideals of the competition.

The winner will become a role model for the younger generation, star in environmental campaigns across the UK and win a goodie bag of beauty products.

“It would be nice to be a role model, I am looking forward to the competition,” she said.

In the run up to the final Jade is asking for companies and organisation who would like her to participate in any community events to contact Miss Earth on 08715 59 42 42 or email info@missearthgirls.co.uk for the attention of Jade Jones.

2010 Miss Earth Nicole Faria, the first Indian to win the title, together with runners-up Miss Earth-Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon of Thailand and Miss Earth-Air Victoria Shchukina of Russia, are here for a two-week visit, to do a series of environment-awareness activities. They flew in from Bangkok a few days ago after the successful launch of Miss Earth 2011 to be hosted by Thailand on Nov. 12.

“I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about the Philippines and I’m thrilled to be here,” Nicole enthused. “It is my pleasure to work with the Miss Earth Foundation, and I am so excited to meet the Filipino people and help protect the natural wonders of such a lovely country.”

Born in Bangalore, the 21-year-old freelance model is in her final year in college where she is majoring in Psychology. Prior to joining the Miss Earth pageant last year, Nicole has been named Model of Year (Bangalore) in 2008 and Miss India South in 2010.

2011 Miss Earth Nicole Faria (of India) with runners-up Miss Earth-Air Victoria Shchukina (of Russia ) and Miss Earth-Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon (of Thailand)

The reigning queens are scheduled to make a series of public appearances on behalf of the Miss Earth Foundation. The activities include the “I am Plastic-Free Campaign,” “I Love My Planet Earth School Tour,” coastal clean-up and tree-planting.

“We hope to give our Miss Earth winners a first-hand experience of the projects that we do in our country,” according to Miss Earth Foundation executive director Cathy Untalan.

When asked if they might also consider a Filipino for a boyfriend or possibly a future husband as Miss Earth 2004 Priscilla Meirelles did (she’s now Mrs. John Estrada), all the reigning queens replied, “Why not?”

They said that they find Filipino men to be loving and caring, same as the men in their respective countries. — Reported by Funfare’s “beauty expert” Francis Calubaquib

Jul 26 2011 By James Cracknell

A MODEL from Ruislip is just one step away from reaching the final of the world's second biggest beauty pageant.

Natalia Kaminska, of Pembroke Road, is one of 30 women who could be chosen to represent England in the Miss Earth televised final after she impressed judges with her environmental credentials.

The competition aims to find a 'green, glam and gorgeous girl' to represent the planet and Miss Kaminska, 23, showed off the dress she had made from recycled drinks cans to help her get through to September's national final in Birmingham.

The part-time beauty therapist, who finished sixth in Miss Middlesex, told the Gazette: "This competition is a bit different to the others I have done because it aims to raise awareness of environmental issues.

"I made an eco-friendly outfit from cans and bottle tops and that seemed to impress them. I want to promote recycling and highlight problems like how much rubbish there is in the sea, which is killing our sea-life. Animals can't take action against this, but humans can."

If selected, the former Sacred Heart School pupil, who also works at duty free in Heathrow Airport, would join more than 100 other national winners from all over the world vying for the chance to become an ambassador for environmental protection campaigns and take home the Miss Earth 2011 crown.

Philippine Daily Inquirer 6:46 am

The earthquake that shook Luzon early Tuesday should be a wake-up call for people to be more responsible and care for the environment, said 2010 Miss Earth Nicole Faria from India.

Faria arrived in Manila on Monday and felt the tremor in her hotel room at Ortigas Center. She told the Inquirer she noticed her bed shaking and asked her fellow titleholders, Miss Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon from Thailand and Miss Air Victoria Shchukina from Russia, if they had also felt it.

“I got scared at first, but I was relieved to know I wasn’t going insane when they confirmed feeling it too,” Faria said at a press conference at Discovery Suites in Pasig City on Tuesday.

The 5.9-magnitude quake was recorded at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday 30 kilometers under the sea about 35 km off Iba, Zambales.

“This is an alarm for us to wake up,” Faria, 21, said. “I believe in karma: What we give the world, the world gives back to us.”

The three young women are in the country to lead a series of environmental activities, in line with Miss Earth’s advocacy. Among the events is an Inquirer Read-Along on July 30 where they will read stories to schoolchildren at the newspaper’s offices in Makati City.

Faria, Wattanakoon and Shchukina will also join SM Supermarket’s “Plastics Free” campaign to help reduce nonbiodegradable garbage. The three will visit Tayuman Elementary School in Rizal for the Miss Earth Foundation’s “I Love My Planet Earth” tour.

They will participate in a clean-up drive and tree-planting activity at the Las PiĂąas-ParaĂąaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area. Two fashion shows are slated featuring them and titleholders from Miss Philippines-Earth at Robot in Makati City and Discovery Suites in Ortigas.

They will also take part in De La Salle University’s environment stewardship forum on Aug. 4.

Lorraine Schuck, Carousel executive vice president, expressed optimism about this year’s competition in Pattaya, Thailand, on Nov. 12.

2010 Miss Earth winners here

MANILA, Philippines — Reigning Miss Earth Nicole Faria of India and last year’s other Miss Earth winners flew into the country Tuesday and vowed to help promote government programs aimed at saving and protecting the environment.

“I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about the Philippines and I’m thrilled to be here. It is my pleasure to work with the Miss Earth Foundation, and I am so excited to meet the Filipino people and help protect the natural wonders of such a lovely country,” Faria said, during a press briefing in Pasig City.

Faria is in town together with Miss Earth Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon of Thailand, and Miss Earth Air Victoria Shchukina of Russia. They flew in from Bangkok.

They will make a series of appearances on behalf of the Miss Earth Foundation throughout their stay in the country. “Through these activities, we hope to give our Miss Earth winners a first-hand experience of the projects that we do in our country,” said Miss Earth Foundation executive director Cathy Untalan.

The activities of the beauty queens include paying a courtesy call on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Aug. 1. It will be followed by a visit to SM Supermarket to promote the chain’s “I am Plastic-Free Campaign.” Capping the day will be a stopover at the Tayuman Elementary School in Rizal as part of the foundation’s “I Love My Planet Earth School Tour.”

On Aug. 2, the following day, the beauty queens will focus on coastal clean-up and tree planting at the Las PiĂąas-ParaĂąaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area.

Fashion has always been part of a beauty queen’s life and the winners, along with the Miss Philippines-Earth past and present title holders, will sashay on the runway in a special fashion show on Aug. 3 at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas, featuring a 36-piece collection of Frederick Policarpio’s creations.

The winners will be off to De La Salle University in Manila on Aug. 4 to participate in a forum dubbed “Fostering Beauty and Responsibility through Environmental Stewardship.”

While the 2010 winners are busy participating in various projects and activities, the preparation for the 11th edition of the Miss Earth coronation night is well under way.

Faria will be turning over her crown on Nov. 12 in Pattaya, Thailand, one of Asia’s largest tourism destinations. International franchise holders of the Miss Earth pageant are already fielding out their representatives for the coming pageant.

“We have received a lot of favorable feedbacks from different franchise organizers,” said Carousel Productions, Inc. executive vice-president Lorraine Schuck. “They are very excited to send their delegates and share their respective environmental advocacies.”

Representing the Philippines is Athena Mae Imperial from the municipality of Casiguran, Aurora. The 24-year-old stunner works as a program researcher for GMA 7. She bested 49 other candidates in the Miss Philippines-Earth pageant held last May.

Aligning with the International Year of the Forests, this year’s staging of the Miss Earth pageant is expected to be a grand showcase of Thailand’s rich culture, tourist spots, and, more importantly, its efforts to save and protect the environment.

Kazz Forbes

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands – Since showcasing his ‘Le Caicos Chic: A Romance with Decadence’ at the Caribbean International Fashion Week (CIFW) on June 8th in New York City, Turks & Caicos Islands own Mr. Kazz Forbes has been busy setting the stage for the continued growth and development of his brand, Saint George Fashion House (SGFH).
Recognizing his meteoric advancement in fashion, Forbes has been personally selected by Organizers of Miss Earth Canada Beauty Pageant 2011 to be the official swimwear designer for this year’s contest. This is not the first time Kazz has worked with the organization or his foray in the world of pageantry. He photographed Jessica Trisko, Miss Earth Canada 2007 and most recently photographed and styled Miss Tanzania Flaviana Matata for NuWoman Summer 2011 magazine and recently crowned Easher Parker, Miss Turks & Caicos Universe 2011 in SGFH attire.

Ronaldo Soriano Trono, National Director for the Miss Earth Canada Organization indicated in a statement “I first met Kazz in 2007, when he was an aspiring photographer and model working in Montreal. That same year, our Miss Earth Canada 2007 winner Ms. Jessica Trisko won the title of Miss Earth 2007 in the international competition and we asked Mr. Forbes to photograph Ms. Trisko for our yearly Miss Earth Canada magazine. He did, and we were impressed with the results.”

Since that time, Mr. Trono said, he has remained in touch with Forbes: “I have been following his career with interest. When I found out about his first fashion show in Manhattan, New York under his new company, Saint George Fashion House, I immediately thought of asking him if he would like to collaborate with the Miss Earth Canada Organization and be our Official Designer for the swimwear. So I did and he agreed. I was ecstatic, excited and proud to collaborate with the intelligent Mr. Kazz Forbes.”

On the collaboration, Forbes said that he was humbled and honored at being asked so early in his career to create a line for such a renowned organization. He noted that “the line is in keeping with the trademark aesthetic theme of SGFH, but giving the Miss Earth Canada contestants that pizzazz to show off their physique during the swimsuit competition.”

Since his New York debut, on July 8th, the Miss Turks & Caicos Universe Pageant Organization honoured Kazz for his achievement and accomplishments so far in fashion design and photography. Then on July 9th Forbes showcased a capsule collection at the Digicel TCI 5th Anniversary Fashion Show on Providenciales – his first catwalk presentation in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

“I am living my dream right now. The opportunities to present my work and showcase to the world have been tremendous and unexpected so early in my career. I am indeed ecstatic by the support and encouragement many have given me. As a young fashion designer I will continue to push ahead for the continued success of the SGFH line and the advancement of fashion in the Turks & Caicos Islands”, said Forbes.

The Miss Earth Canada 2011 Contest will be held on Friday, August the 19th at Holiday Inn Midtown Montreal, Grand Ballroom, Quebec (Canada).

For more information on SGFH, kindly contact Mr. Kazz Forbes on (649) 243-3000 or via email: media@saintgeorgefashionhouse.com. Forbes’ work is featured on: www.KazzForbes.com and www.SaintGeorgeFashionHouse.com

I asked Adam Hernandez why Yeidy is not available for the Thailand trip and it seems Yeidy is off to something big. Here's what Adam said:

"Hi, the reason why Yeidy was not able to go is because she is in the middle of a negotiation with designer Calvin Klein, she will be the new image for the designer's new campaign.

But for the next Miss Earth in Thailand, Miss Earth Fire Yeidy Bosques will be traveling with us for the finals."

Good for her. Go go our Miss Earth Fire 2010- Yeidy! We miss you.

So Linda please remove that dagger from your hands. )
