Sweet Bacolod City
November 9, 2009 · No Comments

The province of Negros Occidental produces beauties. This year’s Miss Earth Philippines Sandra and 1st Runner up Adi both hail from here. But other than the people, they produce another beautiful product: sugar.

If sugar is a main part of their diet, it’s no wonder the people of this province are incredibly sweet. We graced a mangrove afforestation project right away after lunch and was warmly welcomes by a swarming mob of people. What got us truly smiling was seeing the children of the local elementary school holding flags of our respective countries! Yay! I didnt manage to get a picture with the girl carrying Singapore’s flag though I did get one of her on her own. Seeing my country’s flag brought back a massive wave of nostalgia and a surge of pride toward my homeland. The exact same feelings I got when I saw pictures of Singapore’s Tiong Bahru wet market in the in-flight magazine of Cebu Airlines. I couldnt stop telling the other girls about how the ah peks get up early in the morning to have their coffee while reading the daily news at the nearby coffeeshops. Aunties, on the other hand, trawl the wet markets that offer fresh produce like meat and vegetables. Ahhh…

It’s been just past a week since we girls have arrived here in the Philippines for the Miss Earth contest but it feels like forever. Our schedules have hit an all-time high and fatigue is slowly making its way round. Nothing, however, rejuvenates me like being reminded of the little quirks that make Singapore unique.

You never really truly appreciate your country’s little quirks and until you meet another and discuss what’s similar or unique about your own homeland. Like I had to actually THINK about which side of the road Singaporeans drive on. I know we have our driver on the right, but I finally realise we drive on the left.

So anyhoo, my point was that the children were so sweet. They hand-made those flags for us. I wish we could have kept them.

We’re in the hotel chalet now resting up for the night. The rest of the girls are doing a talent segment. My talent will be watching and appreciating the different dances. Cheering and screaming is a difficult talent to have. Eye power for the win!

Flying Without Wings
November 9, 2009 · No Comments

If there’s a trend for this trip, it’s them putting us in death-defying situations. We’re usually above ground with no solid landing directly beneath us.

This morning, we went on a tree top adventure and got to experience free-fall rapelling ala Mission Impossible style, sending screams through the tree top canopies. It was scary at first because it truly felt like you were falling with no parachute, but at least for me, nearing the ground it became a lot better and the fear subsided. I really enjoyed it. Then there was the Superman ride which saw 2 girls zip thru the air forwards and backwards. Now, that was super fun. Hahaha. I caught Miss Switzerlands’s and my expressions on video. Haha.

The adrenalin rush was amazing but short-lived. We had to quickly leave for our preliminary swimsuit competition at Lakeshore.

We had no time to spare. The girls from Group 3 rushed to do their own hair and makeup before going on stage. But as is expected, the actual show always seems to pass in the blink of an eye. The judges picked 5 girls and they will be competing with the other 10 girls from Group 1 and 2 to land the title Best in Swimsuit. These girls are: Miss Mexico, Miss Switzerland, Miss Brazil, Miss France and Miss Paraguay.

Most of us are just really glad that the swimsuit competition is finally over because we’ve been so worried that we’d be eating ourselves fat. The hospitality of the people of Iloco Norte has been absolutely amazing. They feed us non-stop! I think we get at least 5 meals a day: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, snack, dinner.

But we’re back in Manila now and leaving in a couple of hours for another province. I think our group has the best itinerary because we get to explore the lesser seen side of the Philippines. Despite the fatigue, viewing the untouched civilisation and serene beauty of nature is mind-blowing. But let’s not forget the competitions.

Haha. I think it’s funny how we switch from being all road-trippy/girls day out to competition mode in an instant when the time calls for it. But that’s probably the mark of true beauty queens.

Bacolod City — Beauty contestants from 27 countries are arriving in Bacolod City for the Miss Earth 2009 Pre-Talent Competition at the L'Fisher Hotel 7 p.m. Monday.

Eighty candidates from all over the world are joining the Miss Earth Beauty Pageant in Boracay on Nov. 22, said former Bacolod Rep. John Orola, who arranged the Bacolod visit of the Miss Earth beauties.

The candidates have been divided into three batches for the pre-talent competition to be held in Bacolod, Bulacan and Puerto Princesa, Orola said Saturday.

The winners at the three venues will compete for the Miss Talent title on the final pageant night on Nov. 22, he added.

The Miss Earth 2009 advocacy is on Environmental Tourism under the I Love Planet Earth Program. They become spokespersons and role models to create awareness of the global effects of climate change and how to deal with the recent global environmental crisis, he said.

On arriving in Negros on Monday, the 27 contestants will pay a courtesy call on Gov. Isidro Zayco at the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City at 11 a.m. He will then host lunch for them at Planta Hotel.

The Miss Earth candidates at 1:30 p.m. will go to Barangay Punta Taytay, the site of a mangrove reforestation project where they will be received by barangay officials led by Capt. Rufino Alcala and students from the Francisco Flores Elementary School.

At 2 p.m. they will proceed to the VMA Training Center and will be received by Elizabeth Salabas, VMA Global College president, and Philippine Coast Guard officials, and will be treated to a group demonstration on disaster preparedness, Orola said.

Tickets for the Miss Earth Talent Competition at 7 p.m. Monday with dinner cost P1,000, Orola said. Proceeds of the dinner show will go to the Bantay Bata Foundation 163 Negros Chapter of ABS-CBN, he said.

The contestants will be given a brief tour of Silay City's tourism attractions by Mayor Jose Montelibano. /INQUIRER

PRESS PRESENTATION TIDBITS!

Ninety of the Earth's most beautiful paraded for the 2009 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant Press Presentation, held on November 4, 2009, at Mader’s Garden. The delegates voiced out the continuous campaign, “beauties for a cause.â€

Press Presentation was held today. Standouts were the Brazil who looks like an Indian Supermodel, Cuba who has a great resemblance to Natalie Glebova and Priscilla Perales, Czech Republic who looks lovely and sweet, Jamaica who is the Mirriam Odemba of this year's batch, Latvia who looks like a living barbie doll, Paraguay who looks like Pricilla Meirelles in some angles, Philippines, Poland, Spain who looks ravishing, Thailand the best looking Asian girl, Turks and Caicos, and the Victoria Secret Supermodel look-alike Venezuela.

Pleasant Surprises: Guam, Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Martinique, Serbia and Singapore.

Half Filipina Factor! Miss Honduras is half-Filipina, her family and relatives live in Davao while Miss Guam who has a relative in Pangasinan.

Miss Pakistan Ayesha Gilani and Miss Cuba Jamillette Gaxiola are surprisingly strong delegates but they represent countries with strange relationships with beauty pageants. Pakistan is a conservative Islamic country grappling extremism while Cuba is a communist country that thinks pageants are bourgeois events.

Miss Pakistan Ayesha Gilani owns one of the alluring face in the pageant but stands shorter than most delegates. Miss South Sudan Aheu Deng impressed everyone with her towering height of 6'5". She is the tallest delegate in any of the Big Four pageant to date. Many critics were disappointed with Miss Mexico Natalia Quiñónez who looked different from her posted photos.

NEW FINALS FORMAT!

The World Finals will be on November 22, 2009 at the Boracay Convention Center, in the Boracay Eco Village Resort in Yapak, Boracay Island. Due to high quality of delegates competing this year, eighteen (18) semi-finalists will be chosen this year to compete in the Swimsuit competition. They will be trimmed to twelve for the Evening Gown competition until only Eight exceptional ladies would remain to compete for the following titles: Miss Earth, Miss Earth-Air, Miss Earth-Water, and Miss Earth-Fire in the Final Interview Competition. The winner will be crowned the 9th Miss Earth!

The National Costume contest was held in the afternoon at the Amazing Theater at Pasay City.

Miss Tanzania Evelyn Almasi won the Best in National Costume. Miss Puerto Rico Dignelis Taymí Jimenez won the Placenta Special Award for being the delegate with the best looking and glowing skin and Miss Guam Maria Luisa Santos won the Miss PASIGandahan for the most natural and beautiful looking delegate.
