the host country should really only expect to have their delegate be part of the top 18. i'm sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but that's just common courtesy, especially since we just won last year. i mean really! it's a little tacky for our delegate to even make top 4 isn't it?.. it's a reality the Philippines has to accept for now until the pageant gains enough credibility and popularity globally and another country offers to host the pageant. it's common business sense too... so, cut the crap and quit getting personal with the delegates. they have nothing to do with it. the judges know better and Carousel should use better judgement. so let's not make this petty and senseless bickering any cheaper than it it is. some of the stuff posted on hear aren't even intelligible.
if you going to respond to someone, do you really have to call them names?! you think that makes your broken english sound smarter? at least write a rebuttal that's constructive. derogatory name calling is downright juvenile.. it makes every Filipino look like an idiot.
and finally, don't bash the delegates please. it's downright tasteless! 'nuff said.

5 Miss Earth bets
top talent tilt
BY PATRICK PANGILINAN & ADRIAN NEMES III

Negrenses were treated to an international showcase of mainly dance numbers at the preliminary talent competition of the Miss Earth 2009 at the La Proa Ballroom of L'Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City Monday night, as 15 candidates took to the stage and filled the hall with a mix of native sways and modern struts.

Five ladies stood out from the rest of the “women of the earth” and earned the approval of the eight-member board of judges.

Larissa Ramos of Brazil paid homage to her county's famed annual Carnaval in her green Mardi gras costume complemented by her flowing hair and perked up the audience with her hip sways.

Tahiti 's Niuriki Teremente made a follow-up to Ramos' upbeat hip swings with her own rhythmic traditional dance in her three-piece red and brown dress.

Serving the audience with a new cultural flavor, Richa Thapa Magar of Nepal , in her white and sequined traditional Nepali costume, mimicked the basic elements – fire, water, wind, and earth – in a ritual-like performance that called for more understanding and care of the world's ecosystems.

Jia Pei of Macau added to the solemn call for environmental awareness in a combination of sign language and dance to render a Chinese song, which asks the viewers to care for the earth.

Dressed in her red satin gown, Pei got the crowd's participation towards the end of her number, when she briefly paused to emphasize the circular motion of her right hand to symbolize the earth followed by a wave from her heart as a sign of love.

Another audience favorite among the Miss Earth performers, Magalie Thierry brought France 's classic high-kick Can-Can dance to the stage in her black and red dress and drew applause from the crowd, especially with her full split finale.

Other notable performances were that of Honduras ' Alejandra Mendoza, in her Broadway-inspired number and Yi-Wen Chen of Chinese Taipei with her traditional peacock dance.

The 15 performers were among the 26 Miss Earth contenders who visited Negros Occidental to promote the annual contest's goals.

Beauties for a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition

The main activity of the delegates yesterday was a mini-fashion show at the Robinsons Galleria Mall in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City. This event was sponsored by the National Nutrition Council of the Philippines. The host was Miss Earth Foundation Director, Catherine Untalan, Miss Philippines Earth 2006. The delegates who participated in the mini-fashion show were from Group 3 which included Brazil, Chinese-Taipei, El Salvador, France, Greece, Guam, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Macau, Malta, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Scotland, Singapore, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tahiti, Tanzania, Thailand. They introduced themselves to the public in jeans and white shirt bearing the name of Wastong Nutrisyon (Proper Nutrition) with the logo printed on the shirt. Afterwards, the mini-fashion show started with the delegates wearing different color of the gowns and waiving a banner reminding the public on how to eat a healthy diet through proper nutrition.

After the fashion show the delegates then proceeded to the cinema of the mall on the fourth floor for the ribbon- cutting ceremony of the exhibit taken by photographers about people telling the public on how to have proper nutrition. The most popular delegates were Misses Thailand, Brazil, Kosovo, Switzerland, Puerto Rico and Paraguay. Inside the cinema - before the start of the documentary - the girls performed a song and dance stint that they had learned from one of their chaperones. I must say that of all the three groups, the delegates in Group 3 seem the closest to each other as they treat each other like sisters.

That’s all for now. Later, Jonas and I will be covering the Final Swimsuit Competition at the Fontana Leisure Park and Casino in Pampanga. We will get to see all the delegates up close and personal, and see which ones will shine on stage in their two-piece swimsuits! Come visit us again soon!

Beauties for wellness and a night of glamour

It was really fun to see the Miss Earth delegates (Group 1) keeping fit for a day by playing badminton at the Yonex Badminton Center in Mandaluyong City. This event was sponsored by Nestle with Nesvita as their main product used. Before playing badminton, the delegates were given pointers and tips on how to use the racket and shuttlecock. The delegates tried their hands on the badminton racquet. Those who at least know how to play badminton were Misses Australia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Georgia, Latvia, Pakistan, South Africa, Ukraine and Tonga.

Some members of the media from newspapers and television were there to cover the event. We were feted to a sumptuous lunch by Nestle, then the Nestle Wellness Beauties’ awards were given to those Miss Earth delegates who were energetic and had fun playing badminton. The five chosen by Nestle were Misses Australia, Israel, Georgia, Latvia and South Africa.

After the Nestle Wellness activity, I had to wait for at least 5 hours at a mall before the Eco-Fashion Design Competition started. While at the mall, I surfed the internet and uploaded the pictures taken from the morning activity of the delegates. The security was tight as only those who were invited were the ones seated in front of the makeshift ramp stage. But after all the guests were seated the media people were given the chance to take pictures in front of the ramp stage. The host of this event was Miss Earth 2008, Karla Paula Henry. Karla acknowledged the designers who took their time, effort and money to present a wonderful ecologically designed dresses worn by the Miss Earth delegates.

The show started at about seven in the evening and the Miss Earth delegates paraded in their dresses designed by the designers vying for the best of the best in this competition. The delegates who displayed the best catwalk were Misses Albania, Cuba, Georgia, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Latvia, Spain and Venezuela, while the most applauded delegates were Miss Japan who introduced herself in Filipino; Miss Cuba and Spain with their enthralling beauty; Miss Venezuela who spoke in English then translated her speech to Spanish; Miss Pakistan for her dress that wowed the audience because it was a two in one dress; Miss Czech Republic for her dress and bag that can also be worn as a hat.

The winners of this competition were then called. Miss Albania Suada Saliu’s designer received the Best in Use of Indigenous Products award. Miss Perwoll (sponsor’s award) was given to Miss Venezuela, Jessica Barboza. Best in Eco-Fashion Bag Design award went to the designer of Miss Czech Republic, Tereza Budkova. Chosen as Miss Discovery Suites were Miss Albania, Suada Saliu and Miss Spain, Alejandra Echevarria. And the main winner for the Best in Eco-Fashion Design goes to the designer of Miss Jamaica, Jenaae Jackson.
