there were only 9 miss contestants. Wells made an announcement that she got permission to crown three winners with only 9 contestants. My primary problem with that is the fact that there are many other directors who would have loved to do the same thing earlier this year, but we're not allowed. If they are going to issue this edict, then there should be the same opportunities given to each and every local director.

Btw - why is the MAO even giving permission to ANYONE to break rules that they themselves say there are to be NO exceptions to? Either it's okay or its not. Also, that # is not even close. I mean if they had 12 and one got sick the day of the pageant, or maybe even if they had 11 girls I might could see it. but with only 9 girls...why did Wells even ask for permission to break the rules? 9 is nowhere close to 12. just sayin. VERY unfair to other local directors who play by the rules without asking for special favors.

And before anybody out there jumps on their high horse about giving more girls a chance to go to Vicksburg, you can just save that mess. I don't wanna hear it. if there is enough interest, then pageants will make under the stated guidelines. If not, then the interest was not there. end of story.

You sound like a jealous rotten sore loser. I'm extremely pleased this was allowed. We can't afford for any more titles not to make. I'm tremendously pleased one more girl will et a chance to pursue we dream without having to spend more money at another prelim. This is a great thing!

Sounds like someone is sour.. And YES I will say I'm glad she did this because she truly cares about her girls and her pageant. She wants to give every single girl an opportunity instead of standing by and letting another crown go down the drain. Sometimes it's better to simply ask and she did and she received and we have 3 beautiful girls going to Vicksburg. Why make a big deal out of that? You obviously don't care that the system is headed no where fast. GOOD LUCK TO TAMMY AND ALL OF HER GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!

So, you're saying that Wells is the only director who cares about contestants? ummmm...no.

YOU obviously just don't get it. You don't know how it looks to other local directors. It's a double standard...just like the ones you all say you detest from the MMBOD.

Look, this has very little to do with the director who asked for rules to be broken. it has to do with the inconsistency of the MAO AND MMBOD. it's shameful...and would've been shameful no matter which local director asked for it.

And if there is interest and the contestants are good enough, then the girls who SHOULD wind up in Vicksburg will be there.

This is about integrity. the lack thereof is hurting directors and questions alike.

I do care that the system is in trouble - that is precisely why I care about the rules. Lack of rules (or lack of enforcement) will do more for sending the MAO in the wrong direction than any

Actually, it was never said above Tammy is the ONLY director that cares about her girls. But, I have been in the system and actually was blessed to have Mrs. Tammy as my director and she overly cares about her girls! Some of the directors do not even show up at the state pageant let alone do as much as Mrs. Tammy and some of the other directors!

I am making my name very clear for everyone to see. This is my first time to post on this situation after someone told me what happened last night. I was the past director for Vicksburg and Riverbend and on my first year I did not know the rules and I called and asked the Miss Mississippi Board to find out if I had enough girls and I was told I was fine. I was bashed on this board and by my fellow directors at the directors meeting. This last year was my last last year and I will never do pageants and my children will not have anything to do with Miss Mississippi anymore. I know entirely too much. This all being said, they should NOT have crowned 3 girls last night. Rules are rules. Even for Tammy Wells. I would like to see how she fills the paperwork out. That's it.

Amanda, I was at that directors meeting and no one bashed you. the situation was discussed openly and it was clear that the info you were given was not in line with the MAO rules and the info given to all other directors...but no one bashed you. It may seem like you were targeted because lots of people were unhappy with the situation, but it did hapen and was against MAO rules. Sorry you felt attacked, but it did not appear that way to anyone else.

I agree with your conclusion though. All contestants/directors are NOT created equal with regard to the MMBOD and I do not blame you one single bit for staying away. There's a bunch of crooked dealings in the state of MS and it's sad that it's coming from the top down.

I have serious issues with allowing some franchises to break the rules while others follow them to the letter.

However, I have even bigger issues with why we are having such challenges in getting quality contestants. To me, a franchise with only 4 entries should not even exist. I think we, and the MAO, must look at the overriding issues about why young women are not competing. Back in the day, MM routinely had 45, 48 entries. This year, it looks like we will be lucky to have 30! We have to ask ourselves why?

MAO must also ask itself why? What is the cause and how do we address it? Has MA lost its luster? If so,how do we get it back? Is the paperwork overwhelming? if so, what can we do to simplify it? Are the partnerships (such as CMN) off-putting or preventing contestants from entering? I'm sure there are a million other questions both the MMBOD and the MABOD should be asking themselves. And, frankly, I don't think allowing every pageant to be an open is the solution. There are bigger issues out there.

Just my humble opinion.

I think the final ballot has a lot to do with it. The real winners don't win, and girls have to keep competing to do anything at Miss Mississippi. Girls quickly learn the system is crooked at the local and state levels.

I would suppose Vicksburg was still a closed local. Grenada ended up staying a closed pageant. I would suppose it will stay closed unless there are not enough Vicksburg contestants, but there are 12 total who show up, meaning if all were open, three crowns could be given.

I think the MBOD are being overly picky about who they let take over a pageant. I know someone who tried to take over Madison/Madison County last year and was denied. There was no reason at all to deny her. She certainly had the money to do it and was willing to take on the responsibility. She also knew the pageant system.

This board has been such a negative influence on our young women. I hope we will do a better job this year and talk about the positives. If we must give criticism, let's please try to do it in a constructive way that helps our contestants have a chance to win Miss America.

You know, everyone has her bad moments. Sometimes girls learn a lot of lessons they should have already mastered before competing through a pageant. I don't know ABH, but I do know I had a roommate at Miss MS who had been discussed on a previously existing board. There were posts that she had said something really mean about a contestant but in my experience, she was helpful and went out of her way to make me feel less intimidated about the whole pageant. Likely, if a girl even really is as nasty as she's talked about (which I like to hope is never the case) she has heard chatter about it and straights up and flies right-even if it's just for appearance's sake. (Because if she isn't truly a nice person, she'll care what others think for that reason alone). Sometimes these girls start doing pageants are are just little sh*ts and grow up after having to lose one or two. True with any sport :)

Contestants are:

Taylor Cos of Hoover, AL
Alley Daily of Hot Springs, AR
Destiny Denton of Memphis, TN
Anna Beth Higginbotham of Hattiesburg
Elyssa Howell of Germantown, TN
Emma Johnson of Chattanooga, TN
Taylor-Alice Mays of Arab, AL
Mary Frances Stephens of Magee
Cheney Thomasson of Newnan, GA
Shaniqua Wesley of Water Valley
Rachel Westmoreland of Kennesaw, GA

It's interesting that there are only 3 Mississippi girls competing out of 11. Alley Dailey is a Miss MS veteran who competed last year as Miss Dogwood Festival.

It's Elyssa Howell from Germantown, not the girl from Memphis that dates Sean Tuohy.
Talented girl, but may be too young to outshine some of those other girls

Chelsea and Caroline far outshines any "talent" on stage tonight. Their chemistry was great and the pageant was enjoyable. ( outshined) Anna Beth won but no one was better looking. In my opinion she was not the best talent but she won it anyway.

Hilman was robbed. Her on-stage question was not something that should have ever been asked on-stage at a local. She handled it with poise and that in itself should have won it for her. Hall also did really well. I thought it would come down to Hall and Hilman being crowned.

I attended the 2014 Miss MSU Pageant on yesterday. Glad I arrived on campus in time enough to find the location. MSU is doing alot of construction. Upon entry, I could tell it would be a show-down.

1) Harmons entourage was in full-force with posters, etc. The crowd was there for her. They were visible silent with applause after other contestants which did not represent good-sportsmanship.

2) Many other preliminary competitions were represented by their director. Miss Amory was introduced.

Emcees: Chelsea Rick and Tyler Camp
Chelsea performed "Sunday Kind of Love" (Nice Job!)

Miss MSU 2013, Jasmine Murray, was visible throughout entire competition. Danced during introduction number, performed throughout the pageant, etc... (Simply Beautiful!)

Judges:
Carol Wright (Head Judge)
Dr. Jessica Sparks Lilley (Miss MSU 2003)
Bo Miller (Amory)
Aundrea Self
Arma de la Cruz

Contestants, Viewers Opinions, and Results:
1. Meredith Thomas, Piano (Good Job! Piano piece could have been a little more competitive, Good Answer to on-stage question.)

2. Breana Thames, Dancing

3. Randi-Kathryn Harmon, Singing "Hopelessly Devoted to You" (Overall Solid Contestant, Talent could be alot better, had much crowd support) 2ND RUNNER-UP

4. Raven Ponds, Dancing (Talent was very expressive dance)
Should continue competing

5. Laura Lee Lewis, Singing "Somewhere" (Overall Solid Contestant, b/c of her experience seemed confident, but not-cocky whatsoever, Talent was awesome, had crowd there, but they didn't have signs and all. Good!) MISS MSU 2014

6. Jessica Keel, Singing

7. Brigitte Martin, Monologue

8. Heather Haynes, Singing

9. Korea Lee Wicks

10. Kristen Elyse Furr, Dancing (Very Impressive Contestant considering the fact that she is a freshman, hometown is Tuscaloosa, AL; Great Talent; Good Answer to On-Stage Question; should compete again; could easily win another local preliminary) 1ST RUNNER-UP

I was sitting close the people with the posters. They were showing support to many of the other contestants - just did not yell. The Lewis girls supporters didn't do much participating except for Lewis. Thought the 1st alternate was very good. Was not impressed by Lewis. Harmon should wear a brighter dress. She is very pretty.

Sounds like you are a Lewis fan. While she looked nice in a swim suit and her talent was okay, she appeared to be overly confident. She certainly was not pretty. Do not mean to say she is not attractive - just not the whole package.

Miss DSU at one time was a fantastic local. Live music, excellent emcee and quality contestants. Carol Harmon, Theresa Coghlan, Emily Russell, and Pam Morgan. I thought the director was DOY recently and the pageant didn't make last year? The pageant is tonight and no mention of who is competing on their website. SMH
