The former financial secretary for First Baptist Church in Pontotoc was arrested last Thursday evening in connection with a four-count indictment which alleges she stole more a half-million dollars in church funds over the past 14 years.

Pontotoc Police Chief Larry Poole said that Laura L. Franklin, 64, of Greenbriar Circle, Pontotoc, has been charged with two counts of embezzlement, one count of false pretense and one count of credit card fraud.

According to a supplemental notice of restitution which accompanied the indictment released late last Friday morning, the district attorney’s office is seeking restitution from Franklin which totals $537,277.74.

Chief Poole said that Franklin, accompanied by her attorney, Robert W. “Chip” Davis, Jr., of Tupelo, turned herself in at the Pontotoc Police station shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday.

Franklin was arrested and transported to the Pontotoc County Jail, where she was booked and processed, Poole said.

Franklin was later released on a $25,000 circuit court bond, which had been set by Judge James L. Roberts, Jr.

Franklin had been employed as financial secretary at First Baptist Church from September 1998 until some time in August 2013, when her employment was terminated.

Chief Poole said the indictment against Franklin was returned by a regularly scheduled Pontotoc County Circuit Court Grand Jury which was in session earlier this month.

Poole said the indictment was the result of a four-month investigation, which was launched when the church filed an official complaint on September 4, 2013.

A comprehensive audit of the church’s financial records, from 1999 through 2013, was completed in late December, Poole said.

The next regular scheduled term of Pontotoc County Circuit Court begins March 24.

An arraignment day is set for February 4.

I watched her walk out of the Teen CMN pizza fundraiser this last ear and left her unpaid check on the table..the manager went out to say something to her but she has already fled..the MMOT staff was soooo embarrassed and someone ended up paying it. Sad thing is, all the money went to CMN!

OP, I know this is relevant because she was a director but it is wrong for this to be posed on this board for people to gossip about in an anonymous manner.

She has INNOCENT children, grandchildren and friends who are all going to suffer because of her actions even though they had no way of every having an idea this was going on.

By allowing this to get discussed on the board, you are magnifying their embarrassment. I'm sure it is bad enough without the voy board's help.

Most of the time your actions affect everyone around you. Our own Miss America, Laura Keappler used her father's incarceration as her platform. That was very brave because his actions involved his children and I'm sure embarrassed them as well. While unsavory, should be a lesson to everyone!

I'm the original poster, and my response is: PUHLEASE! I didn't embarrass Laura's family; allegedly, she did. Don't put it on me. A secret grand jury of her peers found enough evidence to publicly indict her, and she'll get her day in court to defend herself or plead guilty prior to an embarrassing trial. If she is found to be guilty of these crimes, I think it's only appropriate for her to be exposed as a despicable, dishonest, greedy fraud who stole resources intended to serve the needs of widows, hungry families, motherless children, selfless missionaries, recovering drug addicts, et. al. Let me pose this question: if your mayor was accused of stealing $500,000 of your community's tax dollars, would you be singing this same tune?

Sounds like the Baptist church gave Miss MS a mink coat...not Laura Franklin.

If she was "framed" then it should be easy for her to prove. She was the one keeping the books, so she'll know how to prove it and where to look. If that's the case, then this should all go away pretty quickly. Somehow...I doubt that's the case. Even "good" people do bad things...and sometimes they just get blinded to their own wrongdoing. Unfortunately, it appears that is what has happened here. She is no worse than any of the rest of us, though.

Sin is sin. "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." So before anyone crucifies her on this board or elsewhere, just remember...you are no better....your sins just are not as public. (But in the eyes of God, we're all sinners. Period.)

I just spoke with Amanda Alman and she confirmed that 3 Miss and 3 Teen titles will be awarded Saturday! The titles will be Miss Central MS, Miss Metro Jackson and Miss Heart of the South. She said she has 10 Teen contestants and 9 Miss....this should be a good prelim just by looking at the numbers!

Miss MS/America has been granting permission to locals to crown with just 3 contestants...this started with Tammy's Pageants and continued with Jennie & Amber's last weekend. I am assuming Amanda and other directors were given deal...either way I am glad that 6 girls will be in Vicksburg this weekend.

Now that's just mean. Her talent was dreadful, but you don't know about her interview. She looked good in evening gown and swimsuit. I don't remember OSQ though.

However, I will say that based on what we saw in the stage competition, I would have placed both Byrd and Furr above Dalton and Hillman.

I was there also and do agree that both Byrd and Furr should have placed above Dalton. Dalton is a pretty girl but stumbled on introducing herself so I was wondering how her interview was. I don't remember her OSQ either. But, not sure that's a good thing. Thought it was weird she wasn't in the program so must have been a late sign up or perhaps asked to compete and guaranteed a title? Nahhhhh miss ms pageants aren't rigged what am I thinking --- HA.

Once again the director the Miss Metro Jackson didn't do anything to promote it therefore not having any contestants. So to save face, he goes in with Miss Central Mississippi. Why does the Miss Mississippi Board keep allowing this franchise to be under advertised? First year, you hear nothing about it. Now here it is close to 2nd year and he has to get another preliminary to bail him out.

Having been one of Amanda's former title holders, I can tell you that she went out of her way to make sure I had everything that I needed! She was with me went I went shopping, had my pictures made, spent countless hours helping me prepare both at my house and hers...I wasn't the only girl she had that year and I know for a fact she helped the miss contestant too! I totally respected her decision not to hold a pageant last year because she was battling cancer...I seriously doubt what you're saying is true!

I personally know that particular title holder as well. It didn't go down quite like you think. Some people will complain about anything. Besides that, there are plenty of directors that say "Here's your crown. See you at State." Amanda is not one of them.

I was at the pageant and saw a lot of potential in a lot of young ladies. Like Maggie Shoultz, Katrena Rayner, Jordan Parker. A lot of these girls have put a lot of time in to their talent and formats to get where they are at. A lot of those girls there last night were not there just for the crown, they need scholarships and they have a story to get out. I agree on some of the comments from before. There were girls that got alternate that should have won.

I am not sure what exactly you have against Amanda Alman. However, I have known her for years and she has always been one the nicest people to me. My daughter no longer competes but Amanda was always encouraging, supportive and genuinely cared for my child. Even now years after being a title holder they still talk and visit when she comes home. I was in the audience Saturday and I must say that was the BEST prelim I have been to all in years…it started on time and flowed great all night. There were 20 contestants (10 teen and 10 miss) and that’s one of the largest I have been to in a LONG time. The audience was full and the contestants overall were great…I am glad she was able to bring new girls into the Miss & Teen Programs. These girls are lucky to have her as their director.

Evidently Amanda has you fooled. I think that people have known what Amanda is like and that her past behavior and actions are finally catching up with her. The truth does eventually come to light and the true light of Amanda is now showing. My daughter was one of Amanda's teen contestants and I can assure you she did nothing to help her prepare and was never available to assist in preparing for the state competition. In fact we saw more of Amanda at the state competition in Vicksburg then we did from the time she was crowned till the state competition. At the state competition she put on a fantastic show so that all would think she actually did help my daughter. Amanda is fake.

Just for the record.... Amanda is the biggest fake there is. I am sure of her formers will say she is the greatest thing ever but they are few and far between. Unless you were her little "pet" she won't give you the time of day until she is trying to impress someone. I have talked to numerous former titleholders who felt neglected by her.

Pulling a few contestants for a pageant doesn't make a person a great director. It's what you do after the pageant to help (ALL OF) your girls prepare for their state pageant and the support you provide them that constitute a great director.

Jade Dalton was 1st RU last Thursday night at Hinds. She contacted Amanda on Friday about doing the three pageants the next day. That is why her info wasn't in the program. People always assume some one is doing something shandy when most of the time there is a good explanation. As for her win, she must be doing something right to be a 1st RU and winner in a three day span. I suspect her interview is very good and I know she looked good in SS and EG.

Everyone seems to think that the Metro Jackson Pageant is helping out the Miss Central Mississippi Pageant. This is the second year for Metro Jackson under the leadership of a new director. Have you seen any means of advertisement or solicitation of contestants? If someone does not take the time to try to get contestants, what does that say about how much help they will be for their winner? Metro Jackson use to be such a wonderful pageant.It's a shame for it to go down hill.
