If you believe a comment has been made about you that is libelous, please contact us and we can discuss the issue. What is defamation, libel and slander?
Whether you are the victim of internet defamation or being wrongfully accused of internet defamation, you need to understand the law. In order for a comment, post or article to constitute internet libel, the following elements must typically be met:

The first thing you must prove is that the statement constitutes a false statement of fact. A fact is different than an opinion. A fact can be proven true or false. Opinions are typically not actionable as defamation. The false statement of fact must harm your reputation. There are many false statements posted across the internet. In order to constitute libel, a statement must not only be false but must harm you or your company’s reputation and cause harm.

The false statement of fact causing harm must be made without adequate due diligence or research into the truthfulness of the statement. Alternatively, plaintiffs often attempt to prove that the false statement of fact was made with full knowledge of its falsity.

If the person who is the subject of the false statement of fact is a celebrity or public official, the plaintiff must also prove “malice.” Malice is proven when the person posting the information on the internet intended to do harm or acted with reckless disregard of the truth in making the statements.

There is often confusion about the differences between defamation, libel and slander. In many ways, courts treat defamation on the internet similar to off-line defamation. But there are differences which you need to understand when the false statements are made on-line.

Defamation: An unprivileged false statement of fact which tends to harm the reputation of a person or company. This is a catch-all term for both libel and slander.

Libel: Defamation which is written such as on a web site. Most on-line defamation occurs through libel by posting a web page, comment, bulletin board post, review, rating or blog post.

Slander: Defamation that is spoken such as through an transcribed video, podcast or audio file.

It's clear that the journalist was biased against the organization and against pageant girls. And while I have no doubt that the year is exhausting, Betty is Miss America. That's her job. Whine and complain to your friends or family, but not to a journalist. She gave the journalist exactly what she wanted and every pageant girl who wants to be taken seriously, who would love the opportunity to be Miss America, ought to be a little aggravated with Betty. There are any number of qualified women who probably would have enjoyed the opportunity instead-Hannah Roberts, Kelley Johnson, April Nelson and Meg McGuffin come to mind. Betty's comments were made without giving thought to how they impacted anyone else, and that's just not acceptable when you're Miss America being interviewed by a journalist. I was especially offended for the people who were in the parade with Betty, who may have walked away with a different impression of the experience and their interaction with her, and now they know what she really thought of them. Maybe parades aren't as personally rewarding or interesting as being at CMN hospitals or speaking in schools, but one's interests don't negate her responsibility to leave a positive impression on people wherever she is as part of the job she actively and competitively sought. It's been well-established how grueling it is to be Miss America for a year, as well as how taxing it can be for a state titleholder. In 2015, no one should have gone into it uninformed or unprepared. Why work so hard to get a job you don't really want? Seems to me there's an issue with the Judging! Nan Tannenbaum the Head Judge was sent home because she judged Kristen O in Iowa last year. Scores definitely had to reflect the upheaval.

Obviously not fair to other contestants. Amelia M got robbed and it's the ED job to make certain all judges are instructed to look through photos and Bio's!

*grateful That's the exact opposite of my interactions w/Ashley, both as an ED & as a person I've known for many years. What your post tells me is this: 1) It wasn't your choice to be excluded from the program, 2) Ashley somehow didn't give you the strokes you felt you deserved, & 3) You need some perspective if ANY pageant week can be considered "one of the worst weeks" of your life. Personally, I thought the week ran as smoothly as could be expected. I found the environment much more positive & hopeful, much less tense, dramatic & contentious, than it has been in years. Amen! Well said. Having the Board down was a welcome respite. Why must women attack women? If you can't say it to someone's face, don't say it at all. The new Board did a FABULOUS job. I made the "glad to be done" comment, and you've taken it upon yourself to be a know-it-all, and you are incorrect in your assumptions. First of all, it was my choice to be done. I know Ashley and personally contacted her when she was awarded the state program and wished her well. However, I lost faith in MAO because they took nine years to finally fix the problems in Illinois, despite being made aware of the issues in year 1!!! In addition, I saw the quality of volunteers spiral downward under the last leadership, and as I see people post comments here about the behavior of the left-overs from the A.S. days, that is why I made the comment that I'm happy to be done. Directors, photographers, choreographers, stylists, parents, volunteer workers, contestants, local directors, security, field directors, judges, production directors, etc are still very active in the organization. All of them maintained a relationship of some sort with the Schwerdtmanns. Others still provide sponsorships and scholarships. I don't like to post negativity but myself and several pageant mom's have had such horrible service BE that we need to look into purchasing dresses somewhere else. I am sad to write this, we just adore Jan but her manager is just plain rude especially to the employees. Does anyone know of a good pageant dress place in IL? I won't purchase from Kim's place for obvious reasons so I am not sure what would be a good place that knows the difference between a prom and pageant gown.

It's super exciting that Miss World is now going to be held in the USA this year. I'm really interested to see how July's pageant goes. Illinois has a very strong contender and I think she has a great shot at bringing home the crown!

Zena was one of my pre-pageant favs. And I still she think she is a stunning young woman. After watching prelims, I wonder if she had any onstage training at all? I just wasn't impressed by Harner last year. Last year, as we remember, was a complete mess, so we can't really "count" anything that happened last year as accurate scoring or as an prediction for this year. We'll have to respectfully disagree with regards to Harner. There's no question that Harner's talent is exceptional. And since there's no final ballot this year, the scores carry all the way through. The highest percentage competitions are interview and talent. Of the three, Harner has the best talent by far and, reportedly, a good interview. Plus, she's just as attractive as they are. I didn't say her talent wasn't good. I just wasn't impressed, is all. It wasn't great, technically speaking. It could use some technical tune ups, and perhaps that is what she has done this year. That's the point of this process, to improve. And I wasn't really speaking of her talent. I am speaking of the OVERALL impression. She just lacks something. I can't put my finger on it, but she just doesn't strike me as a Miss Illinois. Again, I just feel like Moe and One carry themselves like a state title holder. We have a wide audience which includes children and teens. They're watching how you handle issues in IL pageantry. We will delete posts with foul language. Second, we are letting the Kim Triani posts stand. My guess would be Vicki Misuraca and the drama that surrounds her. When you sit in a Ijm royalty meeting and the director has to tell you directly that they don't want drama from you and to stop causing issues, you have to look at who is the issue. beware of self proclaimed " official" photographer looking to reel young women in for a photo shoot. No names listed however there is a "photographer" claiming to be an official with various pageants and events to get make himself seem legit. Claiming fame by exploiting his own child, and giving free sessions and showing up at pageants... Squinting his way into earning false trust...getting young women to be alone with him for "teaching" photography and modeling. He's infiltrated Mao and has now weasled his way in to actually judging a pageant. Beware of his unethical phony behavior, as he lures young women in front of his lens.
