However, some formers have been faced with some major life challenges. For example, I think that Gretchen Carlson was a perfectly lovely young woman when she won but she had to face a toxic work environment that IMHO (as a spectator) might have hardened her. After winning Miss America, she was difficult to deal with and wanted to get rid of the physical fitness aspect of competition as she hated having to compete in it herself. She elvated herself to a god like status in her mind the moment that crown hit her head, which we all know that year the judges admitted the wrong person won! The reporter had been conducting an interview with her and described her as being very cold and aloof. Also, in her book, she talks about having a problem getting a custom made swimsuit , something about no one wanted to make one for her because they didn't consider her competitive in that category. I guess that's why she hated swimsuit competition. I personally never understood the backlash against Gretchen before she screwed up Miss America. Even though I thought she came across a bit frosty, I just thought she had never thawed out from all those Minnesota winter. In my opinion, she was a worthy winner. Stamford don't play and her talent was off the charts. One of the most talented winners ever. However, just like Tara Holland, she wasn't running for Miss Congeniality. For the girls that compete year after year, the local board they work alongside is just as much of a prize as the title and the ticket to state. WA state is lucky to be full of local titleholders who are lot only grateful to be holding the title, but excited and honored to uphold the job associated. The WA State local's association is a testament to how important locals are to the longevity of the Miss America program.
