Wow! Excellent and extremely thorough research (as always), Jim! Looking back, I almost can't believe I didn't take the 1910 Census or his marriage to Gladys Slater the day after the 1912 article into consideration while typing my original post.

Regarding Gladys Slater Lufkin: I did find a Gladys Lufkin, b. circa 1897 in Iowa, working as a seamstress in San Francisco in the 1940 Census. Curious as to what the source for her passing in 1925 is, or where she passed (can't find her in the CA Death Index unless she re-married, there's a mistranscription or I'm missing something).

Tried searching for a mention of a Sam Lufkin divorce granted or suit filed in the Los Angeles Times at Newspapers.com, but nothing so far...
