https://wiki2.org/en/Mickey_Rooney#cite_ref-CNN-4-7-14_12-0

MICKEY ROONEY was born "NINNIAN JOSEPH THULE" yet at age 19 for the 1940 Census he gave his name as "MICKEY McGUIRE", a copyrighted name of a cartoon character he played in movies.
His Dad legally changed his own name to "McGUIRE" in an attempt to avoid paying royalties to the rights holder of the "Mickey McGuire" cartoon character used in the movies. They were sued and lost in 1932. Then the Mom (NELL) wanted to change the name to "MICKEY LOONEY" and take MICKEY on a vaudeville tour. They settled on "ROONEY" for a fear of a suit by Warner Bros. (LOONEY TOONES).

In the 1940 Census, we don't know who gave the "McGUIRE" family info to the census taker,(HAZEL ....?), as it isn't indicated like it is supposed to be except for one family on this page. Strangely, census taker (HAZEL) follows the rules and indicates who supplied the information on her other census pages.

Interestingly: Both "our MICKEY McGUIRE" and MICKEY ROONEY had mothers named "NELL".

In the San Fernando City Directories for 1939 and 1940, you'll find "MICKY (no E) McGUIRE" "actor" at the 1940 Census address that is actually ROONEY. I didn't find any "ROONEY" actors in LA and vicinity City Directories from 1935-1940.

MICKEY ROONEY was the one who was confused (LOL).
Now, so am I and maybe Lordheath too.
