Subject: >Yay, friends!<
In reply to: True and Tr'ln 's message, "Ooh, Solitude... <^> =Heart=Skipps=A=Beat=" on 17:30:11 08/24/05 Wed

Though she'd waved at Tr'ln, Talla hadn't expected him to rise and join her, his lovely young companion trailing along behind. From the green hatching that follows them, the girl is one of the Weyr's newest dragonriders. "I don't mind at all!" the young woman assures her friend happily, eyes sparkling. She gestures at the nearest pair of seats. "It's good to see you, Tr'ln. And I'm very pleased to meet you, True," she goes on, turning her attention towards the girl and her hatchling. "And you, Zairith. I don't think I've ever seen such a beautiful green." The girl is hanging back a bit, as if nervous or shy, and Talla feels it's her duty to encourage True to relax and open up a bit. It's a party, and not just that, it's True's party, in that her Zairith is one of the hatchlings being celebrated by this Feast. Talla is the sort of person who is firmly convinced that whatever may happen in other times and places, everyone should enjoy their own party. She'd feel that way even about her worst enemy, because celebrations are special.

Hearing her rider compliment another dragon so enthusiastically, Mylanith stirs. Most beautiful? she repeats, not quite annoyed, but somewhat dismayed.

Of course, Talla knows exactly how to soothe her dragon's overwhelming vanity. /Well, I have to compliment her, don't I? I couldn't look at any hatchling and tell its Impressed that it was anything but lovely. It wouldn't be kind, and more importantly, it would offend everybody, not just them./ It's not that Talla is a mean person. It's just that she'll sometimes be kind or friendly not because she's truly feeling kind or friendly, but because she considers appearances very important, and knows that being unkind would ruin her reputation. That's not the case for this girl, since Talla hardly knows her, but under other circumstances perhaps True would not recieve quite such effusive praise. /Besides,/ she goes on, sensing that Mylanith is still badly offended, /I did say that she's a beautiful green. Which she is, but she doesn't hold a candle to you, my heart. Greens are different, you know that./

For a moment, Mylanith hesitates. Yes. Greens are different, she finally acknowledges, subsiding secure in the knowledge that her rider doesn't think better of this little green pipsqueak than of her. She shouldn't have worried, she decides; Talla knows exactly how glorious she is, just as she knows that Talla is the best rider on Pern.

With Mylanith soothed, Talla comes back to the conversation, shaking her head a little as the glazed look goes out of her eyes. "I'm sorry, Mylanith thought I was insulting her," she apologizes, smiling a bit. "She thinks a great deal of herself, and I'm afraid that I'm not very good at deflating her, since as her rider I can't help but see her in the same light. So, Tr'ln's told you about me, has he?" She giggles. "I hope he hasn't told you anything bad! Although it's more likely he's bored you to tears, I'm really not that fascinating a person." Winking at True, she nibbles on a meatroll.

Having filled their small stomachs with as much meat as they can stuff into themselves, Chapter and Verse are wobbling back towards their human, hoping to sleep off their meal on her shoulders. Stanza preempts them, swooping over their heads to land primly on Talla's left shoulder and give them both a condescending look. Green Verse, bolder and more determined than her brother, squeaks in defiance and struggles into the air - not easy when she's gorged herself so thoroughly - and flaps over to Talla's other shoulder, where she drapes herself over her Impressed in a tangle of sharp-angled edges and joints. She closes her eyes, then opens them and blinks belatedly at Tr'ln, chirping a greeting at the man she remembers from her hatching. This alerts Chapter, and the brown, flopped out next to Talla's plate since he has no intentions of contesting either female, turns to squint lazily at the brownrider. He makes a little noise that could probably be a chirp if he bothered to open his mouth for it, then sighs heavily and settles down to sleep. His sister, on the other hand, turns her gaze on True and chirps again, a cross between a welcome and an interrogative. Talla laughs. "I think they remember you," she tells Tr'ln, reaching up to stroke Verse affectionately, then doing the same for Stanza when sharp claws clamp down on her ear in reminder.
