Probability statistics are fine but only if you define your populations well. Confounding factors do occur which will tend to screw up such probability predictions.

Consider why for instance in sports Australia with a much smaller population able to beat UK in rugby and India and Pakistan in cricket?. Why has Australia with a smaller population had one Nobel prize winner in Medicine and physiology (it only nobel prizes) whilst other similar countries with larger populations have 1 or 2 e.g Canada?
