I don’t know a whole lot but I will share what I do know!

My grandmothers on both sides reported being spanked with switches that they had to go get themselves. This would have been in the 1920s and 1930s.

My grandmother on my dad’s side had a job called “Visiting Teacher” but from what I have gathered her job was what we would today call a combination of Truancy Officer/Social Worker. Because of this I think she was progressive thinking by the standards of the 1940s and 1950s. She did spank my dad and his brother with a flyswatter, but apparently it was very rare occurrence and only when they were younger children. My grandfather on my dad’s side died before I was born and I know very little about him.

My grandmother on my mom’s side used one of those paddles with the ball removed. According to my mom she was spanked frequently by her growing up. She never told me any stories about being spanked by her dad. But, he was a school teacher and his old school paddle was in the basement of their house. He would make the kids he paddled sign their names on it. My mom and my aunt had both signed it, but I don’t know if they just happened to get a paddling at school or if he used that same paddle at home.
