From The Chronicle of Higher Education (4/26/05):

The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has called on the National Collegiate Athletic Association to reject a plan to increase the Division I football season to 12 games from 11. In a memorandum issued last Friday, the commission urged the college presidents who make up the Division I Board of Directors to remember that "there is substantial room for improvement in the academic performance of Division I-A football teams."

The Division I board is scheduled to meet in Indianapolis on Thursday and Friday to discuss a number of proposed rules changes, including the addition of a 12th game to the football schedule. The Division I Management Council approved the change this month, but the Board of Directors has the final say on that and all rules changes for Division I.

I have no idea what impact their statement will have but I don't have a problem with it. The season is plenty long now. If you add a conference play-off game and a bowl game, you're up to a 13 game season for a lot of D-1 teams. Apart from the academic issue, I think someone has to be concerned about the welfare of the athletes. That is an awful lot of wear and tear on the bodies. (NT)An Old Coach11:44:35 04/26/05 Tue

I am opposed to adding a 12th game to the season. 11 regular season games is plenty and we need to remember, these are college students, not pros. Hope the 12 game rule doesn't pass. (NT)Rambacker13:00:31 04/26/05 Tue
