As a Fordham Football fan, who saw every home game in 1954, my freshman year, and traveled to Rutgers to see our last win (19-6 ?) as a "Big-time" program, and who can't get to see too many games now because of my commitment to Fordham Sailing, I hope that our moderator Rob will, as Andres did, humor this old coach by allowing the posting of Sailing team news. So, here goes...
This weekend, Fordham participated in the America Trophy regatta, the spring championship of our 42 team conference. The top 18 teams qualified to do battle for the top three spots, which earn berths at the North American Championship in Austin, TX next month. This is Fordham's third consecutive trip to this event since our return to College Sailing five years ago. In 2003, there were 16 schools and we finished last. Last year, we placed 15th among 16 teams. I'm delighted to report that in the expanded 18 team competition this weekend, Fordham finished in 11th place. Our goal was to crack the top 10 for the first time and at the end of racing in light airs on Saturday, Fordham was in 10th place, but when the winds increased to 15-18 knots on Sunday, our lighter weight sailors were unable to keep up with the heavier competition and we slid to 11th place. After 36 races, 18 in each division, with a 10th place finish in A division and a 12th place finish in B division, it was the most consistent performance in a conference championship by a group of Fordham sailors since the Sailing team was resurrected in April 2000.
By placing 11th at the spring championship, Fordham is positioned very well to be ranked among the Top 10 in our conference for the first time in 2005. Ranking is determined by the points earned at the spring and fall championships and all five of our sailors will be returning. The results:
1. Hobart/Wm. Smith - 139 points
2. St. Mary's (MD) - 151
3. Old Dominion - 189
4. Georgetown - 191
5. Washington C. - 222
6. Navy - 224
7. Columbia - 242
8. Kings Point - 255
9. UPenn - 337
10. NY Maritime - 367
11. Fordham - 378
12. Hampton - 399
13. Maryland - 424
14. Cornell - 448
15. Christopher Newport - 518
16. Ocean County - 527
17. UMBC - 568
18. Virginia Tech - 576
