I know this isn't PC, but I'd demote to club level all sports that don't draw a crowd, or get us some serious regional/national exposure. Nobody gives a damn about squash, tennis, soccer (Sorry JoDete!), swimming, or track & field. Other than "maintaining tradition," there's little reason to even have these sports. They're of interest basically to the athletes themselves, their families and friends. If we pared back our list of sports, then we could concentrate our resources on football, men's basketball, women's basketball (which should be improved or else scrapped), baseball (ditto for that), volleyball, softball, and cheerleading (yes, that is listed as a sport). The difficulty of stretching our finite resources and the challenges posed by Title IX give further reason to pare down, rather than expand our list of sports. I wouldn't be totally averse to adding lax (which is played mostly by pretty good schools on the east coast), but only if we decide to dump baseball.

I would downgrade squash, tennis, track and field. I'd actually do more to promote soccer and baseball due to their worldwide popularity and the fact that they're major sports in NY metro area. I would be willing to entertain lacrosse if it was done right. I would think cheerleading and volleyball as sports would be a good thing for Title IX compliance. (NT)DamnRam18:18:11 01/22/05 Sat
