Subject: I have to disagree. Although the service academies are certainly strong academically, they have both committed in recent years to upgrading football(see Navy's recent bowl appearance) and would not want to lower their RPI by playing a Patriot League, non-scholarship program for that reason. RPI will be based on scholarship vs. need-based under the new scenario so I think that's wishful thinking on your part.

In reply to: Go...'gate 's message, "Re: They would not suffer as much of a post-season penalty as they do now-they can't play us as much, if at all, due to the 1-AA designation. Notwithstanding what Chet Gladchuk says is his "Ask the AD" column, it would enhance the Navy schedule to see a Princeton, Fordham, Lehigh or Dartmouth on the schedule at Annapolis, as was the case for many years. The academies like to think of themselves as academically prestigious schools and they would probably rather play a PL or Ivy than most A-10 or MAC schools." on 10:46:36 01/18/05 Tue

Re: Perhaps, but let's face it - Army and Navy, by their own admission, have returned to a "4-4-3" scheduling philosophy - 4 stretch games, 4 games with an equal opponent, and 4 games with an opponent against whom they will be favored. Many so-called "non-scholarship" schools have fit into that model historically, among them Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Colgate, Lafayette, Holy Cross, Lehigh, and Bucknell. These days, Fordham certainly falls into that class of opponent. I will concede, however, that a 25, 40 or 63-scholarship program might be more attaractive. (NT)Go...'gate20:28:15 01/19/05 Wed
