Subject: Northeastern University announces intentions to build new football stadium

Northeastern has announced it's intentions to build a multisport and recreation complex very close to it's central campus. Would be located on what is now a school-owned parking lot bordering the Roxbury neighborhood and would support football, soccer, lacrosse and track.

They're still in the preliminary planning and fundraising stages. The seating capacity could range up to about 8,500 spectators under the largest scenario.

Fundraising to date is encouraging. Last spring the students themselves voted for a $90 mandatory fee to support upgraded sports facilities. The balance is expected to come from alumni and corporate fundraising. Also, they may consider selling the Parson's Field property which would generate a significant amount of money given it's size and setting in exorbitantly expensive Brookline.

Northeastern is doing this because they feel having such a complex very close to the campus is the final piece to helping the school transform from a commuter to a residential school, as well as of course helping to increase attendance at sporting events.

Interesting that the Mayor and community association representatives didn't know anything about this until it was sprung on them in just the past few days. I like the vision for what they want to do but community relations screwups like that are a great way to trigger resentment and reactive opposition.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this. Northeastern has many of the challenges with available space that Fordham has. (NT)Rambacker22:18:39 12/13/04 Mon

They are also advertising for a capital campaign director for athletics. (NT)An Old Coach08:04:58 12/14/04 Tue
