Subject: Re: Leading with a recreation center as phase 1 isn't a good idea. Leading with a new Campus Center(already a given) coupled with a convocations center with complementary multiple functions serving students/alums/faculty is sound strategy. A well-conceived convocations center serving the entire university is a logical next step for Fordham after a Science Center is planned. By the way, I'm glad you've embraced my original premise from 2 years ago that an integrated capital project including a new Campus Center, Convocations Center, Recreation Complex & Football Stadium is the way to go.

I'm talking about selling an idea, not construction or financing phases. Not sure if you understood that.

Leading with the new campus center idea is nt bad but isn't all that powerful in my opinion because McGinley is (for all its faults) "still serviceable" per McShane due to all the renovations. Leading with meeting and multipurpose rooms sounds rather dry and unexciting. This need could in fact be partially met by adding on an extension in front of McGinley (per the numerous discussions on this over the years) so we don't want to lead with a pain that can be so easily "cured".

I think what would be most exciting from the perspective of creating the biggest, most direct and broad-based impact on quality of university life would be the new rec and fitness center idea. Everyone understands how atrocious Lombardi is and how much of a competitive disadvantage we're at vs. the new luxury facilities built by other schools such as Northeastern and BU (two schools we directly compete with). This is the most enticing part that would affect the most people (even those who aren't basketball or football fans) so why not lead with it?

I've always "embraced" the ideal scenario (in that I thought they would be great to have) but had severe reservations about the way you kept positioning it, the timing and the logistics.

We now have a different president, different coaches, a different economic environment, and competitor schools who have completed projects we can point to as concrete examples of how and why to do this. I also think the posters here (including yourself) are a little more realistic about what to expect. It's a different climate now and I think a better one for good ideas such as this.
