In reply to: JoltinJoe 's message, "This article from today's Contra Costa Times about St. Mary's football during the 1920s and '30s may be of interest. You'll have to regsiter to read the whole thing," on 15:30:41 11/26/04 Fri

…[St. Mary’s publicist Will] Stevens, thinking there was no better trophy than the famed Fordham Ram itself, set out to kidnap the famous mascot. He aborted his plan only when he became convinced that Fordham students were waiting in ambush.

That didn't stop the PR man from issuing a release claiming the stolen ram was aboard the St. Mary's train and that the animal's caretakers had replaced the mascot with an impostor to conceal their embarrassment....

Fans started showing up at train stations across the country demanding to see the famous Ram as the St. Mary's train started West. Stevens explained that the mascot was indeed aboard but under tight security to keep Fordham students and alumni from stealing it back.

Realizing he would have to produce the Ram when the train arrived home, the ever-enterprising Stevens convinced the conductor to make an unscheduled stop near Roseville where a ram was commandeered from a local ranch and welcomed on board and later paraded triumphantly through the streets of San Francisco.

Although St. Mary's joked about kidnapping Ramses, we all know other schools actually succeeded in the task. I don't believe that it is mere Urban Legend that Ramses wound up dead on some ocassions. Anyone know for sure? (NT)JoltinJoe20:02:53 11/29/04 Mon
