From Cleveland Plain Dealer
Mike Schumacher was always one of the biggest players on his team while playing CYO football at St. Gregory the Great School.
So it was sort of a shock when the South Euclid resident entered Benedictine as a freshman.
"I was used to going against guys 50-60 pounds lighter than me and [I] relied on my size a lot," said Schumacher, the Bengals' 6-3, 260-pound senior right offensive tackle. "When I got to high school, there were guys just as big as me."
He was the backup at both tackle posi tions until this season, so Schumacher is well- versed in perseverance.
"I have worked in the weight room, worked on my agility, speed, foot work and technique," Schumacher said. "And I waited my turn."
Schumacher also lis tened to the people who were there to help him.
"Because Mike backed up two positions, he got a lot of reps with the varsity and scout teams," said Pat Conochan, Benedictine's offensive line coach.
"He worked hard to become a better player. He's more aggressive and does a good job staying engaged on his blocks."
Schumacher gives a lot of credit to senior two-way lineman and three-year starter Jim McCarthy.
"Those two are always together," Conochan said. "They talk a lot about the game and their responsibilities on the line."
The football field is not the only place Schumacher excels.
He has a 3.8 grade point average. He is president of his class and the computer club, vice president of the Key Club and a member of the National Honor Society.
Fordham and Dayton have shown an interest in Schumacher for football, as have Ohio Northern, Case Western and John Carroll.
Schumacher, who will also look at West Point and Annapolis, plans to major in business.
Chances are he won't be the last Schumacher to wear a Bengals uniform. His 6- year-old brother, Brian, already weighs 85 pounds. Connor, 8, is lanky.
"Connor's built like my dad," said Mike, whose father, Thom Schumacher, was a wide receiver at St. Ignatius.
Benedictine vs. St. Marys Memorial, Saturday, 11 a.m., Canton Fawcett Stadium.
