In reply to: DamnRam 's message, "I agree those are two very possible reasons, but it really could be that the university feels we now have the facilities and demand for either of those two sports, and that offering them would make us more competitive with certain other schools who already have them. I look at the lockerroom, fieldturf, lights, and possible visitors stands as being more suggestive of a possible upgrade to scholarship football than the consideration of two additional women's sports (especially given the m-f ratios)." on 13:06:07 12/01/04 Wed

Our facilities will still remain average, the additional sports would put us somewhere near 22 varsity sports and would come close to negating the advantages gained by the upgrade in facilities. (I am sure ramMan can verify that number for us, but I think it is close to 22). That is an outrageous number of varsity sports for a private university that to this point still does not offer the maximum number of scholarships in the sports it already sponsors. We need to get better at what we do, not add more sports to be mediocre at.

The bottom line though is that if we are to go to scholarship football we will need to add women's scholarships most likely in the form of a new sport or two unless we drop a few men's sports. Sure the physical elements you mention are signs that football may be heading for an upgrade, but without the additional women's opportunities we will not be meeting the requirements of Title IX.
