James Madison finished the regular season with a higher rank than Lehigh (#8 vs. #16).
James Madison drew more fans per game this season than Lehigh (12,790/game vs. 9,598/game).
Yet, James Madison is playing its first-round playoff at Lehigh today.
My guess is the Mountain Hawks/Engineers were awarded the home playoff game because they have better facilities (Goodman Stadium).

This is what 1-AA scholarship football will do for Fordham. Every year we would have a shot to win the 1-AA title with several nationally telelvised games, including the national championship. Absolutely not true. It guarantees nothing. You still have to recruit and coach players and then they have to play. We are on a level field with the PL right now and we are again struggling to be a .500 team. There is no reason to assume this would change with scholarships. It is like saying just because he have a scholarship program in basketball, we can compete for a national championship. PL seems to be representing itself quite nicely. Incorrect. If a player has to choose between Colgate, Lehigh and Fordham(which is a realistic, ongoing scenario for us now), 9 out of 10 times they go the higher ranked academic school. It's impossible to be consistently successful under that scenario. With full scholarships, we'll get top flight players and student-athletes, can compete with Army, Navy and top 1-A academic schools like Duke, Tulane, etc. and will have a chance to go deep into the 1-AA Playoffs and appear on ESPN. Keep in mind that the best team in 1-AA this year, Harvard (10-0 record and thrashed an A-10 team, Northeastern during the year), is not allowed the compete in the playoffs. Their QB received a Hula Bowl invitation. Their WR turned down a full ride to a Pac-10 team, Oregon St.. Their RB is a transfer from Northwestern. Northeastern was 5-6 overall, 4-4 in the A-10 this season. Not a very good team. I don't think Harvard would make it past the 1st round in the 1-AA playoffs this year, although they do get some very good athletes because they're Harvard. Harvard has always had a couple of 1-A level players for the very reason you mention. But we'll never know how they would have done in the 1-AA playoffs since the Ivy League considers itself above post season play.
