Fordham has made NO effort to entice the public to football games over last decade... OK, FU is not D1 but too never have a plan to increase fan base is poor... promotions, billboards, newspaper ads with schedule, meet and greet players , ftbl schedules on Metro North , a billboard by GWB bridge with ftbl dates, a weekly 1/2 hr cable sports program YES/MSG/NEWS 12/ .. you may mention budget but FU does nothing to incorporate or generate interest to general public..... how does FU expect to generate a bigger fan base when all they ever do is alumni mailings... Good list of marketing tactics. Your best point however was the one about appearing to rely exclusively on promoting to students and alumni when they could also be targeting the general public. Budget is extremely important though, especially when you consider the need to evaluate cost and ROI for each tactic vs. the incremental revenue that would be produced. I think the bigger questions that remain unanswered are how strategic football is to Fordham's Administration, whether it's even a priority to have the stands packed, and if so who they want in those stands. Yes, we waste more opportunities than most Universities get, home football games included. Lehigh, many time Patriot League Champ, has another honor. It is consistently voted the best Football Saturday campus around. Good crowds � double ours - students in the stand, in bands and pep groups abound. So do a lot of alumni � and their children who are everywhere. So are food booths, branches of the bookstores. Part festival, part football and enviable. It's easy to think that and dismiss it that way, but further scrutiny shows that logic does not hold. Think about Cornell or Dartmouth: Ithaca and Hanover aren't the center of the universe and they can't draw a straw much less a crowd. There's more to it than a lack of options. If lack of options was all it took, Colgate should have 40,000 fans in the stand each weekend! Lehigh's doing it right and it's working. If you've never been to a game at Goodman, you are missing out. Go and take it all in. It's a fan friendly venue and an event. A lot of PL schools could learn from them. NYC has not been a market for college football in 50 years, or more. Think about it, its New York City and there is not one D-1A football program, not one. The entire state only has three ( syracuse, buffalo, army ) and New Jersey has just one ( Rutgers ) and Connecticut just one( UCONN ). For some reason or for a combination of many reasons, the tri state metro area is not conducive to college football. Hofstra tried every gimmick in the book and it helped little. New York is a pro sports town. I has exclusively been this way since WWII. There is too much competition for media space not to mention money.
