Geneviève de Fontenay, the self-proclaimed president of the Miss France organization which is now owned by Endemol, recently appeared on the talk show Incroyable! Mais Vrai! on TF1, the same network that broadcasts the popular Miss France pageant, along with the current Miss France Alexandra Rosenfeld. Both women expressed their utter aversion towards surgically enhanced beauties and pageants that obsess about them - a sentiment shared also by many pageant fans and beauty experts. Madame and Mademoiselle's brutally frank comments have been transcribed by Audrey Mouge for the news section of TF1. Critical Beauty has translated the French article for our English-speaking readers. Here it is:

GENEVIEVE DE FONTENAY

“Today, 90% of the participants have their lips plumped up with collagen, their faces injected with botox, and their breasts looking like soccer balls. It’s “Barbie and friends.” How do you expect Alexandra – no matter how charming she is – to compete with a girl who has gone ten times under the knife? Some of them even have their plastic surgeons as their best friends! Blame it on the Americans! They allowed that the candidates be reshaped. What do you want?!!! The Miss Universe pageant belongs to billionaire Donald Trump and you can’t even talk to those people! Sometimes I want to boycott all these international pageants, but even if I don’t send a French representative, they wouldn’t care because they would invent a Miss France as a substitute. And even if we haven’t had a Miss Universe in 53 years (Christiane Martel won in 1953), that doesn’t prevent me from sleeping. I prefer to come empty-handed rather than to have a Miss France with silicone implants! I am proud to say that in France our Misses are naturally beautiful, spontaneous and fresh. I admit that I have not examined the breasts of every Miss to see if they are real or not, but in general they are 100% natural. On July 23 and 24, I will be commenting on the Miss Universe pageant with Christophe Roux and I am not going to be bothered by what I say during the program. And since it will be a live show, no one can cut me off!”

ALEXANDRA (MISS FRANCE 2006): “I can’t compete!”

“I will never be Miss Universe! Going to Los Angeles, I don’t even have a chance! Let’s get real. Out of 87 girls, three-fourths of them are redone from head to foot. They’re extraterrestrials, and I can’t compete with them! I really dread making this trip knowing that my presence there would be insignificant. The personality of these fabricated girls is totally the opposite of mine. I can only hope that my roommate is nice… Let’s be positive. I have to consider the competition not as a torment but a unique experience. I’ll be more of an ‘observer’ than a candidate. Sylvie Tellier told me everything. She met so many mind-blowing girls that these international beauty pageants have become the best memories of her reign. Some of these girls spend their time admiring themselves in front of the mirror or dolling themselves up. They’re narcissists who are crazy about their bodies, obsessed with their manicured fingernails. Even if it’s 104 degrees outside, they don’t get in the hotel swimming pool for fear that their hairdo would be ruined by a wavelet. To these pageant maniacs, being a Miss is a real job. As soon as they notice the cameras, they become ecstatic. The trigger intoxicates them. They smile on cue, flirts with and blows kisses to the lenses. It’s scary. These “dolls” don’t know how to enjoy life. Encaged in a superficial kingdom, these young beauty queens must be really unhappy.” - AUDREY MOUGE
