BANGKOK, May 15 - Now that the 81 contestants are in Thailand, events are taking place and the competition is near, interesting facts about this year's contest are starting to make headlines.
PRESS PET PEEVES
As it happens every year, the local press is complaining about the treatment they get from the Organizing Committee. But the problem is, that a lot of journalists fail to listen and follow instructions. The Committee is extremely careful with the security and also because of sponsorship issues, some actions have to be taken.
However, members of the local press are threatening on boycotting the contest if the treatment continues. The press boycotted the Miss Thailand Universe pageant back in March for the same reason.
Also, a person dressed in a lamb costume representing the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protested in front of the Dusit Thani Hotel, where the contestants are staying. PETA is urging the contestants not to wear animal products.
IN COSTUMES WE GO
The National Costume competition will take place on May 25th, at the Impact Arena Exhibition Centre. Hosts for this event will be Nuttawut Sakidjai (Soap Opera star) and Morakot Kittisara (Miss Thailand Universe 2004).
A panel of judges will have the responsibility of choosing the most beautiful National Costume among the 81 contestants. 10 semifinalists will be chosen, and then a winner and her runner-ups will be declared.
Who will win this year's costume competition? Early favorites include costumes from Mexico, Colombia, Panama and the Dominican Republic, who are always consistent when manufacturing these beautiful tributes to their culture.
WHO LEADS THE RANKINGS?
The media covering the contest, as well as the attendants to the events have already picked their first favorites. Five ladies are gracing every newspaper cover, every TV clip, and are the most followed and pursued during the events:
#1 - NORWAY (Helene Traasavik): The Thai press is fascinated by her being half-thai. In addition to the familiarity and complete knowledge of Thai culture, Helene's exotic looks and outgoing personality puts her as the #1 favorite among the press covering the pageant.
#2 - CANADA (Natalie Glebova): In addition to being tall, sexy and incredibly gorgeous, Canada's Natalie Glebova also has a charming personality to match. She was one of the last contestants to arrive, which helped her build expectation among the press.
#3 - PUERTO RICO (Cynthia Olavarria): It's no surprise to see Miss Puerto Rico among the first favorites, since they are always among the best prepared in any beauty pageant. The importance of the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico equals that of soccer in the United Kingdom. This elegant and eloquent beauty has impressed the locals with her porcelain-doll looks.
#4 - USA (Chelsea Cooley): Lots and lots of personality, what could we say? Chelsea is a born diplomat.
# 5 - INDONESIA (Artika Sari Devi): The publicity surrounding her participation in the pageant does not take away from the fact that Artika is indeed, a well prepared, beautiful and sweet young woman. She wants to make a statement and she is definitely there to compete.
But unlike 1992, there is not a clear standout in the group... yet. 13 years ago, the contestants from Namibia Michelle McLean), Belgium (Anke Van Dermeersch) and Venezuela (Carolina Izsak), were the virtual favorites to win the moment they stepped into Thailand.
Of course, there are 81 equally beautiful and charming girls, and there's still lots to see. The pageant is just starting, and it's anyone game!
