This is the text I accidentally posted on the Old Eps board:

' The Goldberg Variation was a really enjoyable episode – not gruesome or serious. Just a pleasant, clever story with lots of M & S interaction and a nice ‘main guest star’. Henry was a harmless chappie and he had a kind nature. To take advantage of his good fortune to help others was great – and I liked the Rube Goldberg machine making thing too. A bit of fun. The big question over this ep is: What the heck were Mulder and Scully so happy about throughout? They probably smiled more in this episode than they have ever smiled in total throughout Six Seasons! It was like they had a secret! If I didn’t know better (although CC maybe can’t be trusted) I’d describe them as ‘post-coital’! I don’t think I’m exaggerating! Lots of eye contact, lots of joke sharing and exchanging of glances over the case. Hmmmm. What does anyone else think? '

In answer to your post, Sig - I think it was quite good, for once, that we weren't scared ****less by the events of the XF. As you can see, I thought it worked quite well. There is room for lighthearted (superficial, if you will) and at least M & S were in character. I'd rather see this where M&S were interacting as you would expect, rather than Arcadia when they were just - weird!
