Subject: First Person Shooter: I'm with Scully on this one!

OK I liked this and I didn't like it so no one has to
worry about any staunch debating from me on this ep one
way or the other. ;-)

I had a bit of a problem going in with this ep because I
find all this virtual reality game stuff a complete waste. I so loved hearing Scully echo my sentiments! Kind of rare actually. Scully and I don't often agree! But to me, the people who create these things obviously have a high degree of intelligence (at least I think they do. So much of the techno talk is certainly way over my head) so I consider it wasted talent that they are using
their brains to create mindless entertainment instead
of...oh perhaps helping rid the worlds of various
diseases and other problems. You know, stuff that
matters.
Well that's just my gripe about the whole
virtual/computer/video game industry in general. I also do not like violence for violence's sake which seemed to be Scully's feelings as well. I was very much alligned with Scully in this ep.

I'm not sure how I felt about seeing Mulder act like such a little boy. It was weird. He's usually more "adult"
though I know he has his little boy charm which I do love.
But I'm not sure if I thought this was too over the top
with all the references to his excitement with the whole
situation. After all, two people were brutally murdered
and I'm used to seeing a very compassionate Mulder
under those circumstances. Not an "Oh Boy! This is Fun!" Mulder. And I don't know how realistic it was to show all those police officers acting like such adolescents. I'm
sure police officers have their fare share of "working women" come to their precincts and they know they have to go about their business but the way they played this was like it was the first time any of these guys had even seen a woman before. So the joke didn't quite work for me.
I did think it was cute when Mulder was leaning over trying to watch the woman as she left the interrogation room and Scully was blocking his view! LOL See, Scully? All you have to do is dress like that and Mulder is yours!

The epsiode with its references to the game and using it as an outlet or violent behavior was trying to make a statement about men, women and violence. I guess it made some interesting points. I'm not sure yet.

I liked seeing Scully get all panicky when Mulder
disappeared. She was really worried about him! I was very upset at Ivan or whatever the video guy's name was and Phoebe for even questioning, much less preventing the Gunmen from saving the lives of two human beings. Instead we have them trying to preserve their precious video game crap! (As I said I have some strong feelings about this stuff in general!). But the two of them should be brought up on the strongest charges possible, most notably for obstructing justice and knowingly endangering the lives of federal officers.
It doesn't look like that happened though since the guy was just sitting there at the end when he should be in jail! So that annoys me that they just play scenes like that as pure entertainment and we aren't shown realistic consequences.

I though my beloved Gunmen were kind of wasted (no I don't mean they'd been drinking!) but they really didn't do that much. I wish they'd been more involved rather than that silly scene of them fighting Ivan for the keyboard!

But I certainly didn't hate this ep. Far from it. It did present some interesting ideas and had an interesting story. And the set design was fun to see.

Shades of the movie Westworld toward the end there. It
was different and cool seeing Mulder and Scully totally
out of their usual element and in those cyber getups! I was hoping that Mulder would use some of the energy he had oogling over the cyber lady to pay Scully a nice
compliment when she first arrived in Dodge City to help him. I thought it was a perfect missed opportunity for
him to comment since he used to seeing her in more normal Scully clothes!

It was great seeing Scully save Mulder's bacon but at the same time maybe it would have been even more effective to see both of them working together fighting side by side rather than poor Mulder stuck helpless just trying to use that sword to get the door open. A lot of good that was doing!

So overall I thought it wasn't bad and had some good parts to it. Interesting and certainly
a very different idea. Not what I'd like to see every
week though!

Oh and what did Mulder mean when he said something about
cake in the Lone Gunmen's pants?! Or do I want to know?

det :-)

"Bring it on"

OK quick, who knows in what other ep Mulder said exactly that same quote?!
