I know what you mean det, it was a little bit out of character for Scully. My view is that because she does live quite a regimented life, sometimes she feels the need to do something out of character & spontaneous. Perhaps she gets fed up with being referred to as 'Dr. Scully', 'Special Agent Dana Scully' or plain old 'Scully'. Maybe she likes the idea of someone calling her 'Dana' other than her mother. I can't believe that in seven years not even a handful of men have entertained the idea of asking her out. Now if you're starved of that kind of attention you may be inclined to discard the careful judgment that you apply to everything else. Both Ed Jerse & Phillip Padgett were, at face value, mysterious enough to pique Scully's interest; neither of them was wearing a 'I am a serial killer' t-shirt.
