You dont think Pat was a girlfriend? As far as I can tell, she was, but I dont think Brian took it very seriously. Of course, I dont remember him ever mentioning her, and I never knew he had any kids, so who knows? As far as Linda Keith, I knew he was seeing her, but she was kind of flakey. A model friend of mine knew her and said the girl was on shaky ground.
That letter does sound like Brian, but he was distancing himself from her then. Besides, I dont think he was the most sincere person when it came to girlfriends. Something happened to him when a girl started to feel she had "rights" to him. He got the urge to run. The way to keep Brian was to act like you didnt need him, because he was going to always be the needy one in the relationship, for as long as it lasted.
