Alpha-1 people, in its severest form, have respiratory problems their entire lives. They are prone to bronchitis which then can turn to pneumonia in a moments notice. The Alpha-1 gene attacks the lungs, liver, and the brain, and is exacerbated by drug and alcohol abuse, which usually is due to their not knowing they have this condition. My husband had pneumonia five times in one particularly severe upstate NY winter. It would start as a sniffle, then within minutes he was blue and gasping for air. He did not have asthma. At first they thought it was cystic fibrosis, but further tests at Natl Jewish Hospital in Denver proved he was an Alpha-1. All of our kids have it, which meant I am a carrier. His daughter from a previous marriage has it, as does his illegitimate son, but none of them are as severe as my three. I could go on, but your not having seen similar symptoms in Brian, as I did, would then mean nothing to you. Of course, at that time, Id no idea what I was seeing. It wasnt until 1983 that the penny dropped and I started to wonder. As I said, this condition is not rare, a large percentage of the world population has it, but relatively few have it to a degree so as to be noticeable. It can be managed with careful attention to things such as drugs, alcohol, and pollution, but generally turns into emphysema in later years. Its a very nasty thing indeed. There is no known cure, and basically no treatment. If Brian did have it, he would not have lived very long in any case. My husband was, at that time, the worst known case in medical history, and died at 36 a shadow of his former self.
