Actually, I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 8 years old. That was in 1953, so it was for sure known in the 60s, though misunderstood. I had my attacks at night, when I was asleep and completely relaxed. I seriously couldn't breathe, and I can still see the faces of my parents as they would look down at me in the bed.

They had to call my doctor in the middle of the night and rush me 15 miles to his office in the next town (there were no doctors in my little country town in the 1950s). My dad would carry me in, and the doctor would give me a shot of adrenalin (or however you spell it), and within seconds, I'd be sitting up asking everyone what the matter was.

My mother would then start crying and telling me I was blue when they brought me in! The shot was all it took, but the inhaler wouldn't be invented for another 10 years, and the fact that I reached puberty at ll and the asthma disappeared by the time I was 12, I was extremely lucky to have survived and reached old age!

I actually felt a fealty to Brian when I heard that news report, but if he had asthma, it sure enough wasn't the sort that I had. Mine had been brought on by an attack of the measels that also left me with tons of alergies. I've outgrown all of those now too, so I'm skeptical of the asthma theory.

However, your Anti-Tripsyn deficiency sounds like a life-long problem that could have been the ultimate demon that was flamed by alcohol in Brian's case. No wonder it's generally thought he had a premonition of an early death. With something that bad wrong with him, it's understandable that he lived fast and partied hard. He was no idiot, and knew something was wrong, but it looks like his other personal problems and the medical profession's failure to diagnose and treat his illness all compounded to lessen his chances of survival.

He was as much a victim of his time as we all were. You and I were just more favored by the fates than he was.
