I think because Brian had such strong facial features, things like lighting and camera angles could make a huge difference in how he looked.

Good to hear you're getting on so well with your Mother. My Mother and I are still in agreement that "silence is golden". In just a few weeks I'll be flying 2,000 miles to visit all my family (some for the first time). I'm sure by the end of the visit I'll remember all the reasons why I moved 2,000 miles away. ;-)
