I only watch "Lost" on a sporadic basis (yes, I know that's weird. . .everybody else on the planet watches it either religously or not at all) but I can answer at least one of your questions. . .
What's so special about Jack, Sawyer and Kate??
They're HOT!! These three form the "sexy love triangle" that lures the young adult viewers that advertisers so crave. There are a lot of other characters on the show that, IMHO, are more interesting, but advertisers don't really care are who the "grandma demographic" finds interesting. . .they want to attrct young viewers that will inspire advertisers to spend big bucks.
