So it sounds as if Eddie's going to do a bit of stage acting in the next few months. What does everyone think of that? I'm very pleased for him. But now this is torture. I kick myself for not going to London to see Eddie perform in Lenny, and now this comes up, Eddie stage acting, something I've always wanted him to do. Arrgh....

- A trip to London sounds like a great idea!!! I've never been to London. I was thinking of going to England last spring to visit London and go hiking in the Lakes District and then they got the hoof-and-mouth disease problem and closed the walking trails. I couldn't take vacation during the summer (due to big inspections, etc) so I have leave time accrued and I'm dying for some time off. I hope this doesn't mean that movie roles are not materializing for Eddie. Maybe he wants to do some stage work - many people mentioned how he appeared to be enjoying himself when they saw him at the film fests - and he would be near family for the holidays. It seems the 6th Amendment is moot - now anyone who is in custody (even for "questioning") has the right to an attorney, as long as Mr. Ashcroft can listen in, to see if you're talking about "terrorist acts"...in the "present situation of danger to the public" any right to private consultation with an attorney has been "suspended" for a year, with the option to renew the suspension ad nauseam.

So, now the federal government can open your mail, read your e-mail, track your website visits, follow you around, and even take you into custody, all without a warrant from a judge. Should you want to consult with an attorney concerning the abridgement of your rights, they can listen to your conversation, as well. Just in case, of course, you might be a terrorist.

Nothing invites abuse of power like the ability to perform the abuse with the backing of the "law". In defense of freedom, we are losing it.

I suggest a thorough re-read of "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis (I think). Nothing can get so bad that it can't get worse.

Okay Gummy pricked my conscience, I know I've been neglecting this here rant board but I just seem to spend all my writing energy just doing emails lately. Oh what a poor excuse eh?

But come to think of it, I do have a bit of a rant to get out, it's been bothering me for a few days so here goes -

Since the attack of Sept 11, I dunno, it seems we Merkans have been retreating into a shell, not quietly, of course, nothing yanks do is quiet, but with lots of bluster and flag waving and analysis up the kazoo, we are slowly retreating nonetheless.

I mean restaurants seem to be empty, hotels are dead, air travel is dying, companies are putting off plans, Hollywood has cancelled half it's movies, everybody is afraid of mail, of malls, geez.

Okay I have to admit the Anthrax thing is pretty scary but it isn't an epidemic ya know. You can count the cases on your hands, er and feet (?)

It's been almost two months since the WTC imploded and there haven't really been any new attempts foiled, just a bunch of scares and hoaxes. So it's not as if we are on the front lines of this new thing, in reality we are living in the same world as before it happened.

I know, living here in Hollywood, it is really weird. All these slick trendy movie people who act so cool and worldly, and suddenly movies to be shot overseas are cancelled, movie stars won't travel to film festivals or award shows, the whole town has come to a stand still. Like it's too risky to make movies anymore? Geez get over it! Meanwhile people who work in and around the industry are really hurting now, but there's no work.

So we stopped doing things coz we are scared. Scared of what? How can we give up our plans, our vacations, our pleasures, our business deals, why, because something bad might happen? yeah, you could fall down in the shower, that's more likely than being blown up in a plane!

I just see this economy going into the toilet, people losing jobs, money getting scarce, things getting shakier, and it pisses me off. It's like we don't think we have a future anymore?

- Well...if it's any consolation to ya, I am still doing exactly what I always have done....we don't go out to eat now, and didn't before. I'd love to go on a plane and travel around, but didn't before and can't now. I figure if something is going to happen it will, not much I can do about it. - I agree spooty, it is scary, but I think people are overreacting, and if we quit living, Bin Laden wins. It's not stopping me that's for sure, I've been on 3 trips with plane travel since Sept 11 and I'm boarding another plane tomorrow morning. Life is a risk, and we'll all face death sometime. - I figure the chance of contracting anthrax is probably about the same as being struck by lightening....yeah, it could happen, but you don't go around worried about it every day.   - Other countries have been dealing with these kinds of threats for years. I think we have lost our innocence and the sense that we were somehow protected from such acts. When I was on a hiking trip (walking holiday) in Ireland two years ago, the group was mostly Brits. They expressed surprise at seeing corner mailboxes; they had been removed in the UK years ago because terorists would put bombs in them. When we had free time in Killarney one day I suggested that we could stow our rucksacks in a locker in the train or bus station. They teased me for my naivete - "Oh Patti, they took lockers out of the stations years ago." Bombs placement issues again. We have been very sheltered and it is a big adjustment. When I lived in LA, I used to see a similar inability to function in some people after big quakes. A percentage of people do not function well after emergencies.     - Hi Patti how great to see you again! Yeah it was fantastic to see him in LA, just a few blocks from the Henry Fonda Theatre. It was pure joy, in an odd way, it was better than some of the Circle tour, he was so relaxed and seemed happy. As for our reaction to all this, yes, it was a wake up call but an awful lot of people rather just go on sleeping. Okay, I was looking for controversial, and look what they thought up:

The House just recently passed a bill which is being sold as the Economic Recovery Act. This is actually a major windfall for major corporations - the way the law is structured now, corporations have a choice - they can pay income tax on their returns over the year, or pay an "alternative minimum tax" depending on a bunch of things that are too complicated to go into now. What the House has passed is "relief" from the alternative minimum tax - so that many major corps (including IBM, General Motors, and other starving artists) can go TAX FREE this year. The kicker is that the bill also includes a provision for an alternative minimum tax REFUND for the PAST 15 YEARS!! this would mean, essentially, that these corporations would pay NO INCOME TAX for the past 15 years - and would continue to not pay, as long as they qualified under certain bookeeping rules (and having legions of lawyers and accountants, doubtless they would qualify). This is outrageous.

Who will pay for this? You and I, dear reader. Write your Senator, so that this idiocy gets stopped.

Of late, there has been some considerable provocation concerning Mr. Bono (of U2 fame)and the IRA. (...no, the other one, exclusively Irish Catholic membership - you know, the guys who blow stuff up in London...) *ahem*

I must say in a general way, I have always felt great sympathy for the Irish people who were subjugated and abused by the Brits since the Norman Invasion. I have now seen the uncut, restored "Nosferatu" again last night. Quite amusing to sit there and watch those few actual scenes that they re-created in SOTV. While Max Shreck as played in SOTV is horrid, the original (through modern glasses) actually looks faintly ridiculous.

Recomend it to anyone interested in seeing what SOTV was really all about.

Do we all have music that seems to mark certain periods of our lives, that reflects our thoughts and feelings in that time? I seem to be stuck on Carlos Santana Super Natural CD, for almost two years now, this seems to be my music of choice, I'm not sure why, it contains passion and emotion, slow and hard driving songs, and it's bi-lingual. I just love it. I can't seem to get enough, I love to swing with the music. Why is that? Why is music so important in our lives? - Yes, indeed, humor is coming back into our lives. I actually did go watch Eddie the other night, and darned if it didn't help immensely. The man really is a miracle worker. Anyway, back on the topic of bin Laden humor. The funniest thing I've seen so far is a virtual postcard that's supposed to be from the Boeing Corp. to bin Laden. It says, "Now that you're familiar with our commercial airplanes, we'd like to introduce you to some of our other fine products." It has a picture of a 747 (or something of that sort) at the top, and pictures of several military planes at the bottom. Hmm...maybe you have to see it for it to be funny. The best suggestion I've heard for what to do to bin Laden if we catch him is give him "gender-reassignment" surgery and return him to Afghanistan to live as a woman. :-) So, enough gab from me. Dear Folks,

I'm still alive and relatively well and living in Louisiana. I've been watching a lot more news than comedy since the events of 9/11, but I hope to get back in a comedy kind of mood some day soon. "Cake or death" somehow loses a bit of its charm when there has been so much death lately.

I wrote the following poem that I'd like to share with you. Please forgive me for it having absolutely nothing to do with Eddie. :-}

A wave of heroes sent to help was lost.
Beloved spouses, siblings, colleagues--lost.

Fan Fiction 4 or againsed?

As a writer of fan fiction I can't really complain, but I think it is the kind of fiction that I am bringing into question.

I have always written pantomimes at Xmas starring friends and famous people, they have been pretty silly. (Surprise surprise!)

I can't write romantic fiction at all, so I tried to disect what the problem was that i had with other romantic fan fiction and I think what makes me cringe is that half of me is saying 'Eddie wouldn't say/do that in that way', so part of it is me thinking I know Eddie better than everyone else which is pretty sad in itself!!

The other problemo is that the leading lady (the writer) always gets her man (Eddie). Not very realistic!!Anyway, maybe I am missing the point, that's probably how it is supposed to work.

Anyroadup......What I want to know is what you lot out there think, don't listen to me, i'm not slagging anything off, just trying to disect things........

...I have heard...shall we say "rumors"...that we are to thank Colin Powell for the slight shift in the wind in Washington, away from immediate action.

Unlike some of the radical chic would have had it (in 1969, when I had long hair, and was...nevermind!) the last person who wants to go go to war is a general.

While I certainly feel that something should be done about terrorism in general, and Bin Laden in particular, an invasion of Afghanistan wasn't it.

Lets all hope that some reason continues to prevail.

In another vein, I spoke with one of my antiques customers today. He has purchased several items from us in the past, all centering around coffee and tea service for his hotel. We have just about counted him as a "regular" customer. I presented a great find to him today - a Hall coffee percolator/samovar, complete with original electrics, sugar and creamer, about 50 yrs old and still able to perk just fine, thank you very much.

He admired it, and after lingering over it for a moment, turned to me and said somewhat wistfully that he couldnt consider it at the moment - he had been put out of work. It seems that in the ten days after the 11th, his hotel lost over $1,000,000 from cancelled reservations. He is hoping that they re-open National Airport, so that he can get his business back up and running again.

Who would have thought - from the manager of a hotel, through the hotel staff, to the people providing food to the hotel, the cleaning service, the parking valet - have all lost income, jobs because of a madman halfway 'round the world.

It's time to stop being afraid. It's time to get things back in motion. It's time to resume our normal lives, and at least act like nothing is different, that this creature, this insect, has no effect on us carrying on with our lives. It's time for us to stand back up.

Fear is the mind killer.

Anyway Salon Magazine has an interesting review of a book about Afghanistan by a Russian war correspondent. I guess I'm just frightened that we are about to wage another Vietnam war. But surely no politician would be so arrogant and ignorant as to do that?

I've been reading up on the Taliban in effort to understand what we are up against and why they are refusing to cooperate. I understand that bin Laden was a key figure that led to the Afghan victory over USSR, but American helped them too. So, why do they have so much hatred for America? The only complaint I've been able to find is that we left after the war. I don't understand what they expected us to do. Or do they hold the same beliefs as bin Laden regarding America's position in Kuwait and Israel, and therefore it overshadows the fact that we assisted them?

The other question I have is how much support does the Taliban have from the people, and why do they support them? I've read countless reports of the atrocities they've committed against the people of Afghanistan. Are these abuses directed only at the Hindus, Shiites and other minority groups, and therefore the majority of the people support the Taliban? Many reports I've heard indicated that they have abused and oppressed all the Afghan citizens. So I'm getting some conflicting information about how much backing they have.

If I have offended anyone on Mrs. B's Board, no offense was meant - recent events have me torn between righteous indignation and shame.

BZC shared some very good words about grief, loss and healing - we need to do some healing and thinking before striking out in anger. We must rise above the idea of "retribution" - the perpetrators must be brought to trial, and proven guilty - no midnight assassination raids, no bombing runs, no invasion of distant lands to be reduced to sound-bites on CNN. We are about democracy, and freedom, and human rights - not shooting first and doing the paperwork later.

We, America, are the worlds largest weapons dealer - I know, as I support my family on a portion of the proceeds. We will sell anyone, anything, anytime - as long as they promise to not use it. These promises are not often kept - but we still keep selling. The tanks and bulldozers used on Palestinian homes say "Made in USA" on the side - is it any wonder we are viewed as "The Great Satan"? Up until 3 months before the "Desert Storm" fiasco, we were selling arms to Saddam - while we also sold to Iran. Is it any wonder that we are viewed as either stupid or duplicitous?

I am stirred to grief by the senselessness of recent events on our soil, and heartened by the support shown around the world. I am also concerned that we show some wisdom in our actions, in the particulars of the crimial acts visited on us, and in dealing with our own indifference, rather than rash, angry acts that only continue the downward spiral. We must rise above being the same as the bombers and terrorists, and be right, sure and just. With power comes responsibility - we must be sober, and reluctant to strike, as much as the ego may demand otherwise.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of the aircrews, the innocent passengers, the office workers, the military personnel, the tourists, the firemen, the police - who have either suffered or died through the monstrous acts this week. It is my fervent hope that it was for change, rather than a precursor for more tragedy.

hello all i was thinking fashion and our lovely lady and feel that s/he would look really good in velvet.satin and silk.but then i realised compared to what s/he could be wearing in times past its great that s/he like the rest of us dosent have to hehehe....
for example living wigs....they were a great hit for dinner parties and other gatherings they consisted of powdered wigs with a compartment built in the centre which provided a home for say a fieldmouse or a small bird...these would run around the compartment at their leisure while you mingled at yours..my thought get wise and get yourself a mynah bird who could talk to people round you and give a few tips on how you were feeling eg...you are sitting next to a handsome man playing cool and your mynah bird could help with little comments like:"she fancies you get in there fella and snog her" or "you seem like a nice boy ,much nicer than the others shes been out with do you fancy a coffee" in reality of course this didnt happen the animals just ran around leaving poo everywhere and making a noise quite a picture...and snogging must have been difficult with small animals hanging on for grim death in your wig...perhaps they were early family planning..after all its a bit embarrasing when your wig draws attention to a very private moment by squeaking or tweeting ....
then we have the hedgehog type headresses worn around the time of agincourt...lets hope these women made a mental note note not to sit against furniture or tree trunks if pressed when trying to leave they would rip their own heads off...but then as their paramour would be in full armour perhaps they were spared that by being crushed to death in a clinch....
i could go on and on...and do frequently but fashion whatever we think about it is a lot better now than it was and a lot safer....but i still think velvet silk and satin would be cool on mr i...
tomorrow useful toiletry tips like how to brush your teeth with a housebrick or lead paste your foundation and fill in the holes it caused in your face....

So I e-mailed Lion's Gate last week inquiring as to what film festivals The Cat's Meow would be showing at, and today I got an e-mail back from Sarah Crosby(Lion's Gate) stating that it' won't be shown at the Telluride Film Festival(but it is!), and that it will also show at the London and Stockholm Film Festivals. So this is encouraging(thank god!)...but it just shows that no one really knows whats going on...maybe my life isn't as screwed up as I've always thought...*g*

  - Hi Teri, my hunch would be that Eddie is really following the progress on this specific film, hoping that maybe it will be a turning point for him. I would assume he'd attend the film festival in London. I don't know what the date of the Stockholm festival is. I am going to try to get to Telluride but alot of things in the air at the moment schedulingwise, so we'll see. I hope I can swing it and get an individual ticket but the biggest problem is that Telluride doesn't list the films and times until the first day of the festival (Friday), so I won't know until then if I can go, and by the time I get there, I could miss it. What the fuck is going on?

I was so looking forward to the release of Cat's Meow, to it's Toronto showing and the reviews, and then the slow publicity build up for the film. And yet now it sure seems like this is one that they will slip out quietly, and then release later to video. I don't know what is going on, I can only assume that they don't think it likely to get big audiences or great critical reviews and so they will save the money for one of their other films.

But maybe they will still do some promos, though it's weird that they don't even have a trailer yet! How hard can that be?

I wonder how Eddie is taking all of this, or is he too busy with his own plans and stuff to notice? It is a weird time, he turns away from comedy to film and then his work disappears! I just wonder if there isn't something behind it, perhaps some people in Hollywood don't care for him, as Cyn seemed to suggest. I do know that many people in Hollywood don't much like Bogdanovich, so there might be some of that behind the struggles to get Cat's Meow out. What is hard is that Eddie's next movie, Revenger's Tragedy, is directed by one who also has had major problems with Hollywood, and I don't think there will be much clamor to acquire that movie for the US, unless it becomes a hot commodity on the film festival circuit.

But for me I hope he just keeps working with the rebels and the pariahs of Hollywood, even though it means his movies are hard to see, because there is a reason lots of creative people can't work in Hollywood. Nowadays the shit that the Biz creates is horrid stuff, the equivalent of fast food, viewing it rots your brain, and working on it rots your soul. The studios don't let you make the movie you want to make, the story you want to tell, because all they care about is making 100 million at the box office, selling the soundtrack, etc.

It's all part of a whole, the dumbing down of our culture, the movies, the music biz with it's Britney Spears and Ricky Martins, our news media with it's obsession with sex scandals and other dreck, and to our politics with it's pandering tax rebates and manipulation and lies. And it seems the people are more or less indifferent to all of it, too tired and bored to protest and demand something better. The one thing all of those above things have in common is that behind all of them are corporations making a ton of money. I don't mind that so much but when it gets to the point that artists and small businesses (such as independent film studios a la Lionsgate) cannot find a place to show their work, and people like me cannot find the kind of stuff we like, then there is something wrong!

Oh dear, sorry, I got off on a rant, but I don't understand why they are not releasing Cat's Meow with any publicity. Maybe Bogdanovich is still tinkering with it, responding to the negative reviews with some last minute editing. Well at least there is one consolation, that a limited release means that it will show in LA. I do feel for the rest of you guys, because that means that it will never come to the smaller towns.

Someday soon, probably within five years, they will have movies at websites, and we can download them for a fee, onto a burnable DVD. Apple already has one computer, very expensive, that has a DVD burner built into it. If that happens, we will be able to acquire any movie all over the world, sort of like Napster. God, I hope that will happen, then it'll be word of mouth, with lots of natter over cyberspace, to point us to movies, not all these huge monstrosity movies like Planet of the Apes, and Pearl Harbor.

Someone tried to steal DVDs from work today by putting them in a carrier bag from a fabric remnants shop and hiding them under an Argos catalogue.

I found this deeply amusing, and it rather reminded me of our dear Lord... ;)

For someone who is 19 years old, over-the-hill is 'about 40',it's a generation away, it's 'like yer Dad'.

For someone (comedian/actor)who is 39, it's not that old! being 40 can sound daunting, but it is really a new beginning. You're not old yet, and being more mature is a plus. it means you know more and hopefully start to learn from your mistakes.

When you look back at 19, you don't want to be there anymore. it was painful. Life begins at 40.

The writer/director/actor of Hedwig and the Angry Inch was on Politically Incorrect and he said that he meets so many transexuals because of his play and he says most of them post op stilling fancy girls so that make them lesbians. I would think the bigger adjustment to be made is by their partners, who must go from straight to lesbian. I guess for those who stay together, love conquers all.
