Subject: :::standing well back as Rox opens this big f*ck-off can o' worms::: Jus' kidding, sweetie, we're all relaxed and groovy enough to handle even the slipperiest of subjects. Anyway, as both a heathen and a Libertarian-type, my only problems with religion come from its organization. Faith is wonderful -- I envy those who find comfort and beauty and security within their faith of choice. (click here because I'm chatty)

To me, (and understand this is solely my point of view), religion took a bad turn when it became a means to political, financial or authoritarian ends. The point's made often enough, but it bears repeating -- more wars and general ugliness have come about as a result of organized religion than any other reason. That in and of itself tells us something's not right about the way faith is delivered to the masses.

That said, it's also true that religion has brought uncalculable joy to millions of people for thousands of years. So the question remains, does it all balance out in the end? Are the benefits of faith worth the pain of organized religion?

Finally, (and once more, just my opinion), as an Executive Chickadee in the 21st century, one of my big sticking points with organized religions has to do with the fact that there is a refusal -- a technofear, if you will -- of modernizing their thoughts and expanding their world views. i think we'd all agree that the world is a changing entity, as is God, one would assume, and we're all sort of hanging on to words written thousands of years ago as an absolute, unchangeable truth. They say NO to the idea of a woman's choice, in spite of the fact that we're overcrowded and rapidly depleting our natural resources. They condemn other faiths as false when it's obvious (to an outsider, at least) that most religions are variations on the same themes, with slight reinterpretations that most likely occurred as a result of the varying viewpoints and experiences of the different tribes, villages, regions or countries that the original faith (whatever that can be called) touched.

Just my two cents, and my apologies if I've tred on any toes!
