While religion has been one of the great uniting forces for humanity, it has also been one of the most divisive. Most folks tend to take their religion as a set of rules, and boundaries in an "anti" sense - both "you cant do that" and "we are against THOSE wankers over there..." - and the message gets lost in "modern" religion.

There have been many "see-ers" over the course of time - up to and including Mr. Ghandi.

Religion can be a very beautiful thing. It can also be used for hate and control. It provides order and structure and meaning in times where often it isnt to be found in the secular. It also can be used to impose order and rules on others one wishes to dominate.

As our "simple" universe becomes more complex, as we expand our awareness from the infinite of space down to the very composition of matter, it becomes increasingly difficult to believe in a humaniform "god" - I feel that as we grow up (as a species) we will realize that there is a Creator - a "main thought" if you will - but it is completely beyond our understanding; personification helps us think we understand for now.

Interesting to note, about religious music - I have found some of the most incredibly moving bits of music are from Russian liturgy - but the Russian Orthodox Church has no appeal to me at all.
