Subject: Im not sure about Mr. Vidal, but - nature vs. nurture - who put the "vs" in it? I believe that we are Human Beings, a blend of genetics and environment - you cannot separate them. All but basic behavior is learned - and learning has many forms, only one is "the way yer raised." We make decisions through our lives (not making a decision is a decision) - and with personality one tends to what works (which can include being outrageous to society - being "different" can be as strong a desire as many others). On the "nature" side of things, if we are honest, homosexuality is abhorrent - (wait! READ) as its counter-survival, in a species-survival sense. I know of no animals that practice same-gender sexual relations (on a continuing basis) except Human Beings (I exclude infamous Malthusan experiments with lab-rat overpopulation). Why is this? Our overdeveloped fore-brain, re: decision making capabilities? Where does this lead? Why am I writing this? Aggh....
In reply to: Roxy 's message, "Hi Magenta! (LOVE your name!) I agree with you about it probably being *both* a nature & nurture thing. What makes the most sense to me is that humans are basically bisexual, but of course, are born with one specific gender. I really believe in people getting together because of whatever is inside, the *soul* lets' say. I know a man who grew up with a terrible relationship with his father. He wasn't abused, but grew up essentially hating his father and anything he did. He used to have girlfriends, and later announced he was bi-sexual. His mom threw a fit, told him he couldn't be bi. He identifies himself now as gay. In this situation, there is obviously a whole lot of other influences besides nature, though I wouldn't call it "nurture". Unfortunately, we just don't live in a world that will accept everyone the same way." on 15:50:38 07/10/01 Tue
