Presidential Year election phenomenon. More people get excited about voting during the Presidential election years and a higher turnout generally favors the Democrats historically.

Republicans tend to be the hard core voters who will come out in rain, sleet, snow, etc. while the Democrats are much more laid back, dare I say "nonchalant" about the whole Democratic process.

They show up if it's important enough to them and if enough people work their tales out to get them registered and get them to come out.

And of course giving out free hooch seems to be a time honored part of the Democrats version of the Democratic process. Perhaps somebody at party HQ got cheap with the freebies this year?
