As most of you know, I smoke and generally have no problem not smoking when it bothers someone else, BUT ususally the ones that aggravate me are standing in a smoking area. Just as these people have the right NOT to smoke, I do, and there needs to be ways to co-exist without pissing each other off. Most bars are going to oppose this type of legislation because it may hurt business, then again, if the people who smoke stop coming in, nonsmokers will just fill their place. Also it bothers me when I'm outside and a nonsmoker walks up and stands near me (saw me smoking, yet stood there anyways) and complained that the smoke was bothering them. Well, I didn't ask you to stand there. While it should work both ways, the majority of the time the nonsmokers thinks they should always have the right of way, and expect everyone to just stop smoking because they entered a smoking area on THEIR own free will. What I mean is, yeah anyone has a right to go in somewhere and have a good time, but if that person knows alot of people are smoking inside, yet still goes in, I don't see where that person has a right to complain. Now, if they suddenly make that establishment a smoke free environment (which is fine by me, I'll go outside to smoke) some usual customers may not keep coming in and will just find another place to go. Also, I keep getting the feeling that the local gov'ts are trying to send a message by all this thinking it will get people to quit altogether, which may work on a few people, but folks will still smoke, and even though it's an unhealthy habit, if you take away one person rights to benefit another, it's discrimination.
