was the Hillary thing really true? I remember it, but also remember it being called into doubt. At the very least, it was done in private conversation and in my mind doesn't rise to the level of Trent's remarks. I also don't think that Jesse's does either. It's one thing to make a prejudicial remark; another to express an attitude that civil rights and desegration harmed this country.

I also think that the Democrats have kept themselves in check throughout this. Of course, the black groups are up in arms, but what would you expect? They've known for quite awhile that Lott is a racist bastard and are probably relieved he's been outed. Secretly, I think the Democrats want Trent to stay in power as a symbol. Besides, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. If the GOP can paint the Democrats as more concerned about unions than security, the Dems can paint the GOP as more concerned about corporate contributors than minorities. But as you say, the bulk of the criticism has been from within, and for good reason.

Finally, I think the GOP deserves to have this bit of scandal upon them. They have for decades played both sides of the fence. You have guys like George Bush professing multiculturalism and inclusiveness; while at the same time you have the Trent Lotts winking to the Southern consrvatives. It's as if they're saying, we have to talk the talk but don't worry -- we'll give you Ashcroft as Attorney General. We'll get Pickering on the federal bench. We'll squarely attack civil rights legislation and affirmative action and all those other things you hate...
