Hi,
I need some help. I am going to college this spring. I have not been in the classroom for about 20 years. I have suffer with dyslexia all my life, and had a terrible time in school. I would not be going back if it was not necessary. For those of you who have taken it on to go back to school. Would you have any good suggestions about taking notes in class. This is my biggest fear. Back when I was in school copying off the blackboard just didn't work. Any suggestions are very much welcome.

Hello,
The problem with copying things off the blackboard or whiteboard in the computer world now, can be hard. This is what I did to help myself at home and at school was to practice writing down anything without looking at the sheet of paper that I was writing on. Make sure you have a clean sheet of paper an practice. You can even use your computer as the blackboard write without looking at your paper. As for note taking in class; use a small tape record to help you remember things. I found that this also helped me in school. Do not be afraid to tell the teacher after class is over that you are dyslexia. It will help the teacher try and teach a different way. Sometime this is a challenge for teachers but it can be done. Also see if you can get together with other student who are having problems with the same subject. Everyone learns differently and you can learn from each other. Good Luck with school I hope this information helps.

I guess it all depends on what you will be going back to school for. I went back to school for my masters after being out of school for 8 years. Let me tell you...things have changed. I found it easier since a lot was now done online vs. copying things from a blackboard or even worse (for me) taking notes from a virbal lecture.
I did my masters in a science based field. I requested the professor email me all his powerpoint presentations before the class. This way i could review the information and had to take less notes.
I was always the one to ALWAYS initiate a study group. It is easier to verbaly study and talk problems through then reading thoughts from a book and trying to be a sponge.
You can do it!! Don't shy away from something you deserve - an education.

Take a tape recorder to class. you might want to ask the teacher for permission to record his/her class.
Find out if your school has help for dyslexics.
Try not to be afraid. Good luck

I'm in school now working on my masters degree in vocational rehabilitation. I am a dyslexic and use a variety of technology to help me. I use drag which is a speech to text program….. all though it does not work very well when you have a cold… also have a zoom text and of course use talking books… most of this equipment can be purchased for you when you when you sign up with her your local vocational rehabilitation Office.

Traditionally when someone speaks publicly they have a list or outline that they use to keep themselves on track. If your having to take notes it really helps me to imagine it backwards. Like... if I was writing his outline what would it be? You'll find that you start to ask yourself the right questions and you'll naturally gravitate towards the meaning of each bullet in the outline. As you do this jot those quick bullets down. If you were talking to yourself about what he's saying while he's saying it, you're a lot more likely to remember it.

Now-a-days you can use a recording device in class.

I would make point form notes...don't even try sentences...and do not worry about spelling.

I found I can read if I use a ruler as a guide as I read books.

When I went to College and University I used extra reading to replace class notes which I can not take.

Hope this helps
